In a series of 366 patients identified as at risk for a fetal neural tube defect (NTD) before the 24th week of pregnancy, 64 had an abnormal fetus. The abnormalities included anencephaly (39), open spinal defect (17), closed spinal defect (2), encephalocele (1), and a miscellany of other abnormalities (5). An ultrasound examinaton prior to diagnostic anmiocentesis positively identified all anencephalic fetuses, the fetus with the encephalocele, and 15 of the 19 fetuses with spina bifida. The spinal defects in 3 of the remaining 4 fetuses were demonstrated at a second examination. Since both am

Between May 1975 and the end of 1977, 6443 antenatal patients were screened mainly between 16 and 22 weeks of pregnancy for neural tube defects (NTDs) at the John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford, by maternal serum alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) measurement; a take-up of 72 per cent. Seventeen out of 18 (94 per cent) patients with open NTD pregnancies (9 out of 9 with anencephaly and 8 out of 9 with open spina bifida) had positive screening tests, and all except one were offered and accepted a termination of pregnancy. Two hundred and forty-five (3.8 per cent) patients with unaffected pregnancies also had

Neural tube defects represent some of the most common and serious of the congenital malformations. Although elevation of alpha-fetoprotein in amniotic fluid is not diagnostic, it does indicate an abnormality of the fetus in a very high proportion of cases. A normal level, however, does not exclude the possibility of a closed neural tube defect. It is therefore recommended that all amniocenteses performed between 15 and 20 weeks of gestation include measurement of alpha-fetoprotein. Maternal serum alpha-fetoprotein assay is a screening test and pilot studies will be necessary to determine its v

Among the methods available for the midtrimester diagnosis of neural tube defects, it has been suggested that amniography be used to determine the presence of meningomyelocele. Twelve studies are reported in which the procedure was utilized. In 3 cases, a neural tube defect was present but was not detected by this method. The experience reported here challenges the value of this procedure and suggests that it should be evaluated further by utilizing it in cases where a positive diagnosis has been made by other methods and pregnancy termination is to be performed.

Anencephaly and spina bifida both are malformations of unknown etiology which are caused by an absent or incomplete closure of the neural tube. The risk of recurrence for the malformations is 5% in families with one child with a neural tube defect and 10%, if two such children have already been born. Neural tube defects can be diagnosed already before 20th week of gestation by ultrasonics and alpha-fetoprotein measurement in amniotic fluid, if an underdeveloped neurocranium or a free communication between amniotic and cerebrospinal fluid is present. By these diagnostic techniques and possibly

Neural tube defects (NTDs), as a group of diseases, are congenital disabilities due to incomplete closure of the neural tube along its length, which otherwise forms the fully developed brain and spinal cord. An amalgamation of genetic, nutritional, and environmental factors plays a role in causing NTDs. They develop relatively early, within the first month of pregnancy-the time of neurulation, which could indicate that the pathogenesis of these diseases could stem from even pre-pregnancy causes like folic acid deficiency. This article provides an overview of the various etiology of NTDs and ho

Neural tube defects (NTDs) represent a failure of the neural plate to complete the developmental transition to a neural tube. NTDs are the most common birth anomaly of the CNS. Following mandatory folic acid fortification of dietary grains, a dramatic reduction in the incidence of NTDs was observed in areas where the policy was implemented, yet the genetic drivers of NTDs in humans, and the mechanisms by which folic acid prevents disease, remain disputed. Here, we discuss current understanding of human NTD genetics, recent advances regarding potential mechanisms by which folic acid might modif

Until 2015, systematic statistical data on micronutrient deficiency was not available in Georgia, to provide developing national strategy. In the same year, the National Centre for Disease Control and Public Health of Georgia (NCDC) in collaboration with the USA CDC launched the project "Strengthening surveillance of micronutrient deficiency in Georgia". In 2015 we did choose sentinel surveillance approach. For setting nutrition surveillance system 8 sentinel sites (2 sites in each region/children and pregnant health facilities) in four regions of Georgia (Tbilisi, Kakheti, Achara, and Samegre

BACKGROUND: Variants in planar cell polarity (PCP) pathway genes have been repeatedly implicated in the pathogenesis of NTDs in both mouse models and in human cohorts. Mouse models indicate that the homogenous disruption of the Ptk7 gene, a PCP regulator, results in craniorachischisis; while embryos that are doubly heterozygous for Ptk7XST87 and Vangl2Lp mutations present with spina bifida.
METHODS: In this study, we initially sequenced exons of the human PTK7 gene in 192 spina bifida patients and 190 controls from a California population. A phase II validation study was performed in 343 Chin

BACKGROUND: Craniosynostosis is an uncommon complication after shunting procedures for congenital hydrocephalus. We report a case of a child with myelomeningocele and normocephaly at the time of birth. She underwent ventricular shunting for Chiari malformation and hydrocephalus at 3 days of age. An immediate postoperative CT scan confirmed all sutures were open. Serial CT scans document an open metopic suture at 2 months, closed metopic suture at 5 months, and trigonocephaly at 11 months with concomitant slit ventricle syndrome, and collapsed lateral and third ventricles.
METHODS: An Ovid MED

BACKGROUND: Adverse associations between maternal pesticide exposure and neural tube defects (NTDs) have been suggested but not consistently observed. This study used data from the multisite National Birth Defects Prevention Study to examine associations between maternal periconceptional (1 month preconception through 2 months postconception) occupational pesticide exposure and NTDs.
METHODS: Mothers of 502 NTD cases and 2950 unaffected live-born control infants with estimated delivery dates from 1997 through 2002 were included. Duration, categorical intensity scores, and categorical frequenc

Neural tube defects are severe congenital malformations affecting around one in every 1000 pregnancies. An innovation in clinical management has come from the finding that closure of open spina bifida lesions in utero can diminish neurological dysfunction in children. Primary prevention with folic acid has been enhanced through introduction of mandatory food fortification in some countries, although not yet in the UK. Genetic predisposition accounts for most of the risk of neural tube defects, and genes that regulate folate one-carbon metabolism and planar cell polarity have been strongly impl

Nutritional deficiencies are preventable etiological and epigenetic factors causing congenital abnormalities, first cause of infant mortality. Folate deficiency has a well-established teratogenic effect, leading to an increasing risk of neural tube defects. This paper highlights the most recent medical literature about folate deficiency, be it maternal or paternal. It then focuses on associated deficiencies as nutritional deficiencies are multiple and interrelated. Observational and interventional studies have all been consistent with a 50-70% protective effect of adequate women consumption of

The incidence of neural tube defects is higher in Turkey compared to that of developed countries. To prevent congenital malformations, understanding of the current status is necessary, which should be followed by public-based activities. We examined the incidence rate of neural tube defects (NTDs) in Afyonkarahisar. According to the records of the Department of Pediatrics, Zubeyde Hanim Hospital for Children's and Women's Health in Afyonkarahisar, the total number of births was 8631 during 2003 and 2004. Sixty-three babies with anomalies were identified in the early postnatal period. The incid

BACKGROUND: Animal studies demonstrate teratogenic effects of caffeine, whereas human studies are inconclusive.
METHODS: Associations between maternal caffeine consumption and neural tube defects (NTDs) by type of NTD (anencephaly, spina bifida, or encephalocele) were examined using data from the National Birth Defects Prevention Study (NBDPS). Total average daily caffeine from coffee, tea, soda, and chocolate consumption during the year before pregnancy was estimated for 768 mothers of infants with NTDs and 4143 mothers of infants without birth defects who gave birth during 1997 through 2002

According to previous case reports, some congenital abnormalities (CAs) of the brain, such as microcephaly, are a result of intrauterine herpes simplex virus infection. A population-based case-control study was conducted to determine the risk of neural tube defects (NTDs) after maternal herpes labialis infection during pregnancy. Data were taken from the Hungarian Case-Control Surveillance of Congenital Abnormalities from 1980 to 1996, which included 1202 children with NTDs and 21641 comparison children with CAs other than NTDs. The adjusted relative risks (odds ratio [OR]) for NTDs associated
