Moyamoya disease usually manifests as ischemic events in childhood, and as more severe hemorrhagic events, including intraventricular hemorrhage, in adults. Recently, the indication for neuroendoscopic surgery has been extended to cast-formation intraventricular hematomas. However, detailed information about the use of neuroendoscopic surgery for the treatment of intraventricular hemorrhage associated with moyamoya disease has not been reported. We describe two cases of intraventricular hemorrhage with moyamoya disease; one in a 62-year-old and another in a 33-year-old women who both presented

BACKGROUND: Lateral recess sphenoid sinus encephaloceles (LRSSEs) are considered a rare condition. Conventional surgical treatments include open approaches and endonasal endoscopy. These approaches are associated with approach-specific comorbidities. Alternatively, transorbital neuroendoscopy surgery (TONES) has been shown to provide a direct, minimally invasive approach to the middle fossa. Only a limited number of publications have reported using TONES as the primary surgical method for LRSSEs.
OBSERVATIONS: A 57-year-old female presented to our hospital with a 1-month history of increased

BACKGROUND: Extracranial hypoglossal schwannomas are rare, and transcranial skull base surgery can be challenging due to their proximity to the lower cranial nerves, jugular vein, vertebral artery, and carotid artery. The application of neuroendoscopic surgery for extracranial hypoglossal schwannomas has rarely been reported.
CASE DESCRIPTION: A 53-year-old woman previously underwent lateral suboccipital surgery for a hypoglossal schwannoma when she was 25 years old. The patient had experienced aggravated dysphagia over the past month. Radiological examination revealed a recurrent extracrania

Pain generator-based lumbar spinal decompression surgery is the backbone of modern spine care. In contrast to traditional image-based medical necessity criteria for spinal surgery, assessing the severity of neural element encroachment, instability, and deformity, staged management of common painful degenerative lumbar spine conditions is likely to be more durable and cost-effective. Targeting validated pain generators can be accomplished with simplified decompression procedures associated with lower perioperative complications and long-term revision rates. In this perspective article, the auth

BACKGROUND: No consensus has been achieved on the superiority between neuroendoscopy (NE) and craniotomy (CT) for the treatment of supratentorial hypertensive intracerebral hemorrhage (HICH). The purpose of this study is to analyze the efficacy and safety of NE versus CT for supratentorial HICH.
METHODS: A systematic search of English databases (PubMed, Embase, the Cochrane Library, and Web of Science) was performed to identify related studies reported from September 1994 to June 2019. The Newcastle-Ottawa Scale and the Cochrane Reviewer's Handbook 5.0.0 were separately used to evaluate the q

OBJECTIVE: Hypertensive intracerebral hemorrhage is a potentially life-threatening neurological deficit with the highest morbidity and mortality. In recent years, neuroendoscopy has been used to treat intracerebral hemorrhages (ICHs). However, the choice of neuroendoscopic surgery or craniotomy for patients with ICHs is controversial. The objective of this meta-analysis was to assess the efficacy of neuroendoscopic surgery compared to craniotomy in patients with supratentorial hypertensive ICH.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A systematic electronic search was performed using online electronic databas

BACKGROUND: Microscopic detection of intracranial brain tumors with 5-aminolevulinic acid (5-ALA) has proven extremely useful, and reports the use of 5-ALA have recently increased. However, few reports have described 5-ALA photodynamic diagnosis (PDD) using a neuroendoscope. We performed neuroendoscopic 5-ALA PDD for various brain lesions and present a procedure using only a neuroendoscope.
METHODS: We describe the diagnosis of 20 intracranial brain lesion cases with a 5-ALA-guided fluorescence endoscope. A light-emitting diode that emitted either white light or 400- to 410-nm violet light wa

Transnasal endoscopic surgery has remained at the forefront of surgical management of sinogenic complications involving the frontal sinus, orbit, and anterior skull base. However, the difficulty in accessing certain areas of these anatomical regions can potentially limit its use. Transorbital neuroendoscopic surgery (TONES) was recently introduced to transgress the limits of transnasal endoscopic surgery; the access that it provides could add additional surgical pathways for treating sinogenic complications involving the frontal sinus, orbit, and anterior cranial fossa. We describe a prospecti

A quadrigeminal cistern arachnoid cyst is a very rare cause of typical trigeminal neuralgia. A 62-year-old woman presented with right facial pain of 8 years duration. Neuroradiological findings revealed a cystic mass in the quadrigeminal region that compressed the cerebellum downward and the brainstem anteriorly and was associated with hydrocephalus. She had neuroendoscopically-assisted cyst-cisternal shunting via a small craniotomy. Postoperatively, the trigeminal neuralgia disappeared. The origin of the trigeminal neuralgia may have either been a marked distortion of the pons that caused str

Primary spontaneous Intracerebral Hemorrhage (PSICH) is a devastating disease occurring in 24.6 cases per 100,000 people per year, more common with chronic arterial hypertension. Emergent hematoma evacuation remains a lifesaving intervention especially in younger patients with large hematoma volume and are clinically deteriorating. Timely and appropriate management is key to improving outcomes. In this study, we compared whether conventional craniotomy or neuroendoscopic surgery would lead to improved mortality and better functional outcomes in patients with PSICH. Specifically, we wanted to d

INTRODUCTION: The Tarlov cysts are pathological enlargements of the cerebrospinal fluid spaces between the endoneurium and perineurium, which can cause intolerable sciatic pain, motor impairment of lower limbs, and bladder/bowel dysfunction. Currently, the treatment results are unsatisfactory due to the low cure rates and extensive surgical trauma. Thus, there is an ongoing exploration of surgical techniques for Tarlov treatment. In the current study, we present a novel neuroendoscopic-assisted technique that combines the fenestration, leakage sealing, and tamponade of the Tarlov cyst.

There are several treatment modalities for the management of subdural fluid collection in infants, such as fontanelle puncture and drainage, burr hole irrigation, and subduroperitoneal shunt. This report describes the case of a girl born with congenital neurological impairment due to severe injury of the brain with unknown etiology. At five months of age, she suffered from head trauma and developed somnolence after three days and was diagnosed with a bilateral massive chronic subdural hematoma. Normal fundoscopy did not confirm the non-accidental head trauma. Neuroendoscopy using a single burr

In the past four decades, enormous advances have been made in the neuroendoscopic techniques, along with improvement of illumination, and the development of effective instruments. As a result, endoscopic third ventriculostomy (ETV) and choroid plexus cauterization (CPC) have become consolidated techniques for the treatment of hydrocephalus. In particular, endoscopic cauterization of the choroid plexus has increased the effectiveness of hydrocephalus treatment in combination with ETV. In the past decade, the use of flexible endoscopes has enabled surgeons to resect even the temporal segment of

INTRODUCTION: Treatment or multilevel hydrocephalus is a complex problem. Neuroendoscopic interventions, make it possible to combine minimal invasiveness with the possibility of fenestration of several cysts during one procedure and thereby eliminate multi-level occlusion. We present our the experience of using a neodymium YAG laser (Nd-YAG laser) as an additional tool to improve the treatment results of patients with non-communicating hydrocephalus.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: This study included 10 patients aged from 5 months to 8 years who underwent endoscopic interventions with the use of rigid
