Evaluation of Neurological Examination, SEP Results, MRI Results, and Lesion Levels in Patients Who Had Been Operated for Myelomeningocele.

OBJECTIVE: Myelomeningocele is the most severe and the most frequent form of spina bifida. Most of the myelomeningocele patients undergo operations in new-born age. In terms of life quality and rehabilitation, follow-up's of these patients in the growth and development period after the operation is critical. In our study, our aim is to emphasize the correlation of SEP results with MRI results and clinical features of the myelomeningocele patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In our study, we included 36 patients who had undergone myelomeningocele operation and have been followed-up in Istanbul Bil

Preliminary Use of the Physical and Neurological Examination of Subtle Signs for Detecting Subtle Motor Signs in Adolescents With Sport-Related Concussion.

Sensitive examination tools are needed to optimize evaluation after sports-related concussion. The Physical and Neurological Examination of Subtle Signs was preliminarily examined for sensitivity to motor changes in a pilot cohort of adolescents aged 13-17 yrs with sports-related concussion. A total of 15 adolescents (5 female adolescents) with sports-related concussion were evaluated up to three times: within 2 wks of injury, approximately 1 mo later (mean, 35 days between visits), and for those not recovered at the second visit, again after clinical recovery (mean, 70 days between the first

Neurotoxicity of long-term low-level exposure to carbon disulphide: results of questionnaire, clinical neurological examination and neuropsychological testing.

OBJECTIVE: Carbon disulphide (CS2) is highly neurotoxic. There is ample evidence of damage to the peripheral and central nervous system. The air concentration at which such adverse effects can first be observed is presently a subject of controversy. METHODS: In a cross-sectional study of CS2-exposed workers from the viscose industry and healthy controls, data on neurological complaints, basic laboratory diagnosis, clinical neurological examination and neuropsychological testing were evaluated. Data were from 222 workers in the viscose industry exposed to CS2 and 191 employees from the same fa

Transfacial transcranial penetrating fishing arrow injury with intact neurological examination: controlled intraoperative shortening and extraction. Illustrative case.

BACKGROUND: Nonmissile craniofacial penetrating injuries from elongated metallic objects are uncommon and carry significant risks related to concealed vascular injury, hemorrhage, dural violation, and infection. Early CT and selective vascular imaging guide safe management, and blind extraction outside the operating room (OR) should be avoided. OBSERVATIONS: A 17‑year‑old male presented after transfacial penetration by a "supergun" rod entering inferior to the right zygomatic arch and tracking beneath the temporal squama toward the middle cranial fossa. He arrived with a Glasgow Coma Scale sc

Longitudinal Hammersmith Infant Neurological Examination (HINE) Trajectories in Children with Cerebral Palsy Identified in High-Risk Follow-Up.

Background/Objectives: The Hammersmith Infant Neurological Examination (HINE) is a standardized neurologic exam for infants between 2 and 24 months. Scores can be compared to optimality cutoffs as one component to support an early diagnosis of cerebral palsy (CP). Some prognosis is also possible for infants diagnosed with CP. We aimed to understand the longitudinal trajectories of HINE scores in infants who were ultimately diagnosed with CP. Methods: Clinical records were reviewed for children who were diagnosed with CP in two high-risk infant follow-up clinics with HINE scores from at least t

Osteoarthritis and Neurological Disorder Diagnoses in Adults: A Meta-Analysis Examining Associations With Parkinson's Disease, Multiple Sclerosis, and Alzheimer's Disease.

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a highly prevalent joint disorder that is emerging as a global threat to health. OA is associated with low-grade chronic systemic inflammation that can affect overall health, leading to a sedentary lifestyle and potentially increased risk of neurological disorders (ND) such as Alzheimer's disease (AD), Parkinson's disease (PD), and multiple sclerosis (MS). A meta-analysis was conducted following the Preferred Reporting Items for 2020 Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. MEDLINE, Web of Science, and Embase databases were searched to identify records.

Usefulness of neurological examination for diagnosis of the affected level in patients with cervical compressive myelopathy: prospective comparative study with radiological evaluation.

OBJECT: Although neurological examination is the key step to reaching a correct diagnosis of cervical compressive myelopathy (CCM), the accuracy of diagnosis of the affected spinal level for CCM has not yet been tested. METHODS: The authors conducted a prospective study to elucidate how accurately the affected intervertebral level can be determined and decompressed based on neurological examination. Fifty patients who underwent successful decompressive surgery for cervical myelopathy caused by single-level disc herniation or spondylosis were included in this study (38 men and 12 women, mean a

Foot Tapping Test as Part of Routine Neurologic Examination in Degenerative Compression Myelopathies: A Significant Correlation between 10-sec Foot-tapping Speed and 30-m Walking Speed.

INTRODUCTION: Leg spasticity in degenerative compression myelopathy causes impairment of fast and rapid repetitive movements, which tends to appear despite the disproportionate paucity of clinical weakness. As clinically useful measures used to quantify the slowness of voluntary leg movements in this pathological condition, we compared the foot tapping test (FTT) with the simple walking test, which is now considered the gold standard in this field. METHODS: We compared the FTT with the simple walking test, the grip-and-release test, and the functional scales of Nurick and the Japanese Orthope

Prognostic Value of the Day 5-7 Neurological Examination in Anterior Circulation Ischemic Stroke: A Post Hoc Analysis of the MARVEL Trial.

INTRODUCTION: Early prediction of long-term recovery after endovascular thrombectomy (EVT) is essential for guiding care but is often confounded by the instability of acute neurological assessments. We aimed to evaluate the prognostic value of the National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) measured at day 5-7 or earlier if discharged (D5-7/discharge) compared with baseline NIHSS and change-based metrics for predicting 90-day functional outcomes. METHODS: We performed a post hoc analysis of the MARVEL trial, a multicenter randomized clinical trial involving adult patients with acute is

Are Constant Pain, Night Pain, or Abnormal Neurological Examination Adequate Predictors of the Presence of a Significant Pathology Associated With Pediatric Back Pain?

INTRODUCTION: Previous studies have suggested that most cases of pediatric back pain do not have an identifiable cause. No reliable sign or indication differentiates between a benign or serious cause of the symptom. Constant pain, night pain, and abnormal neurological examination have been suggested as adequate predictors of an identifiable cause, when plain radiographs could not explain the symptoms. The purpose of this study is to determine the sensitivity, specificity, and likelihood ratios of constant pain, night pain, and abnormal neurological examination to predict the presence of an und

Neurological examination of the peripheral nervous system to diagnose lumbar spinal disc herniation with suspected radiculopathy: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND CONTEXT: Disc herniation is a common low back pain (LBP) disorder, and several clinical test procedures are routinely employed in its diagnosis. The neurological examination that assesses sensory neuron and motor responses has historically played a role in the differential diagnosis of disc herniation, particularly when radiculopathy is suspected; however, the diagnostic ability of this examination has not been explicitly investigated. PURPOSE: To review the scientific literature to evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of the neurological examination to detect lumbar disc herniation wi

Species-specific neurological examinations are necessary in guinea pigs (Cavia porcellus) and do not differ between client-owned and laboratory animals.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate for differences in normal neurological examination findings between client-owned and laboratory guinea pigs and establish a species-specific neurological examination. METHODS: Healthy adult client-owned and laboratory guinea pigs were prospectively enrolled in an observational study. Neurological examination tests commonly used in cats and dogs were performed and results documented. The study evaluated the ability to perform each test and whether it generated the result expected (extrapolated from cats and dogs). Differences between groups of > 20% were evaluated with F

Low Sensitivity of Neurological Examination, Curve Laterality, and Thoracic Kyphosis for Detecting Chiari I Malformation and Syrinx in Operative Pediatric Scoliosis.

BACKGROUND: For pediatric patients with presumed adolescent idiopathic scoliosis, surgeons rely on abnormal neurological exam, left-sided thoracic curve, or thoracic hyperkyphosis to initiate preoperative magnetic resonance imaging; however, the sensitivity of these screening criteria for detecting neural axis anomalies of Chiari malformation type I (CM1) and syrinx is not well understood. We aim to determine the frequency of abnormal neurological exam, left-sided thoracic curve, and hyperkyphosis of thoracic curves in patients with operative scoliosis and CM1 and/or syrinx. METHODS: A retros

Data on a novel approach examining the role of the cerebellum in gait performance improvement in patients with Parkinson disease receiving neurologic music therapy.

Individuals with idiopathic Parkinson's disease (PD) benefit from Rhythmic Auditory Stimulation (RAS) concerning gait impairment recovery. In PD, RAS may help eliciting rhythmic and automatized motor responses, including gait, by bypassing the deteriorated internal "clock" within basal ganglia for automatic and rhythmic motricity. We aimed at exploring the contribution of the cerebellum to this "bypass effect" in response to RAS. To this end, we examined the cerebellum-cerebral connectivity indices using conventional EEG recording to assess whether the cerebellum contributes to RAS-based post-
