Anxiety and depression in twin and sib pairs extremely discordant and concordant for neuroticism: prodromus to a linkage study.

Multivariate modelling of anxiety and depression data in twins has suggested that the two phenotypes are largely underpinned by one genetic factor, while other studies have indicated a relationship between these disorders and the neuroticism personality trait. As part of a study to identify quantitative trait loci for anxiety and depression, questionnaire responses and interviews of 15,027 Australian twins and 11,389 of their family members conducted during the past 20 years were reviewed to identify individuals with neuroticism, anxiety and depression scores in the upper or lower deciles of t

[Type A personality and its relations: the significance of hostility, neuroticism and verbal behavior for coronary heart diseases].

Despite the growing body of evidence against Type-A behavior pattern as a risk factor for coronary heart disease, there remains much interest in the relationship between some of the Type-A components, especially hostility, and coronary heart disease. However, the construct of hostility too needs further refinement into overt-expressive hostility which correlated positively with the severity of coronary occlusion and the covert experience of hostility, or neurotic hostility, which is negatively correlated. Loud speech and the frequency of simultaneous interruptive speech are other attributes as

Association between neuroticism, genetic susceptibility, and peripheral artery disease risk: a prospective study in UK Biobank.

BACKGROUND: Neuroticism is one of five personality traits characterized by a tendency to generate and intensify negative emotions in the face of stress and is linked to an elevated incidence of cardiovascular disease (CVD). However, the pathogenesis of peripheral artery disease (PAD) differs from other CVDs. This study aimed to investigate the association of neuroticism with PAD and to examine whether genetic susceptibility influences this association. METHODS: 399,730 PAD-free individuals from the UK Biobank were included. Participants were categorized into high (≥ 4 scores) and low neurotici

Neural correlates of neuroticism: A coordinate-based meta-analysis of resting-state functional brain imaging studies.

Neuroticism is one of the most robust higher-order personality traits associated with negative emotionality and risk of mental disorders. Many studies have investigated relationships between neuroticism and the brain, but the results have been inconsistent. We conducted a meta-analysis of whole-brain resting-state functional neuroimaging studies to identify the most stable neurofunctional substrates of neuroticism. We found stable significant positive correlations between neuroticism and resting-state brain activity in the left middle temporal gyrus (MTG), left striatum, and right hippocampus.

Mother-Child Bond through Feeding: A Prospective Study including Neuroticism, Pregnancy Worries and Post-Traumatic Symptomatology.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a common postpartum problem and influences maternal bonding with the infant. However, the relationship between this disorder, maternal personality, and the infant's emotional state during feeding is not clear. The aim of the present study was to explore the contribution of neuroticism on the infant's emotional state during feeding, by attending to the mediating role of postpartum PTSD (P-PTSD) symptoms and the moderating role of worries during pregnancy. A prospective design study was developed with 120 women with a low pregnancy risk. They responded to

Joint Exposure to Positive Affect, Life Satisfaction, Depressive Symptoms, and Neuroticism and Incident Type 2 Diabetes.

CONTEXT: Whether the psychological wellbeing status could be a risk factor for type 2 diabetes is unclear. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to measure the association between combined psychological wellbeing factors and type 2 diabetes and investigate whether this association was modified by genetic predisposition. METHODS: Prospective cohort study from the UK Biobank. In total, 127 496 participants who completed a psychological wellbeing questionnaire and did not have type 2 diabetes at baseline (2006-2010) were included; among them, 88 584 (69.5%) were analyzed to determine their genetic predisposition

Neuroticism in temporal lobe epilepsy is associated with altered limbic-frontal lobe resting-state functional connectivity.

Neuroticism, a core personality trait characterized by a tendency towards experiencing negative affect, has been reported to be higher in people with temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) compared with healthy individuals. Neuroticism is a known predictor of depression and anxiety, which also occur more frequently in people with TLE. The purpose of this study was to identify abnormalities in whole-brain resting-state functional connectivity in relation to neuroticism in people with TLE and to determine the degree of unique versus shared patterns of abnormal connectivity in relation to elevated symptoms

Neuroticism, Negative Affect, and Negative Affect Instability: Establishing Convergent and Discriminant Validity Using Ecological Momentary Assessment.

Few investigations have examined the role of affective instability within a broad model of general personality functioning. The present study employed self-report and ecological momentary assessments (EMA) to examine the relations between self-reported Five-Factor Model Neuroticism, EMA average negative affect, and EMA negative affect instability. Results suggest that Neuroticism and negative affect instability are related yet distinct constructs, and that Neuroticism better represents average negative affect across time. Results also suggest that negative affect instability is related to low

Childhood trauma and impulsive behaviors: the multiple chain mediating effects of neuroticism, stress perception and depression.

BACKGROUND: Childhood trauma and impulsive behaviors are frequently observed in clinical pathologies, such as borderline personality disorder and bipolar disorder. This study aimed to investigate the intricate interplay between childhood trauma and impulsive behaviors, the mediating roles of neuroticism, stress perception, and depressive symptoms, and sought to discern the distinct effects of emotional and physical trauma on impulsive behaviors. METHODS: A cohort of 637 clinical patients completed scales assessing childhood trauma, impulsive behaviors, neuroticism, perceived stress, and depre

The dynamic interplay between neuroticism, extraversion, and problematic gaming in adolescents: A 4-wave longitudinal study.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Adolescent problematic gaming is a global public health issue, and is associated with numerous negative outcomes. The Big Two personality traits, neuroticism and extraversion, have been identified as significant predictors of problematic gaming in adolescents. However, most previous studies have been cross-sectional, limiting the ability to explore their mutual influences or causality inference. This study addresses this gap by employing a longitudinal design and utilizing the Random Intercept Cross-Lagged Panel Model (RI-CLPM) to examine the bidirectional relations betwee

Psychological distress and suicidal ideation in patients with depressive disorders: the chain mediation of psychological resilience and neuroticism.

OBJECTIVE: Suicide in depressed patients has become a serious challenge in the field of public health. In-depth analyses of the relationship between psychological distress and suicidal ideation, as well as its intrinsic mechanisms, are of great clinical significance for the prevention of suicide in depressed patients. The objective of this study was twofold: firstly, to explore the intrinsic relationship between psychological distress and suicidal ideation in depth; and secondly, to further investigate the mediating roles of psychological resilience and neuroticism in this relationship. Association of early adversity, neuroticism, and depression with perceived severity ratings of stressful life event vignettes.

Stress appraisal is implicated in psychological outcomes and may be influenced by environment, personality, and psychopathology, but novel methods are needed to examine how individual differences influence appraisal. Using participant-rated stress appraisals of life event vignettes, we hypothesised an association between researcher-rated and perceived severity, and early adversity, neuroticism, and depression would each be associated with higher average ratings of stress severity and steeper slopes, that is, a more rapidly increasing rate in perceived severity ratings as researcher-rated sever

The causal relationship of depression, anxiety, and neuroticism with endometriosis: A bidirectional 2-sample Mendelian randomization study.

Endometriosis, identified by the abnormal growth of endometrial cells beyond the inner lining of the uterus, often manifests through symptoms like painful menstruation and challenges in conceiving. Observational studies suggest that endometriosis is often comorbid with mental disorders, including anxiety and depression. The nature of these connections, whether they are causal, is still debated and calls for further empirical evidence. We utilized a bidirectional 2-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) approach, harnessing genome-wide association study data to explore the connections among depres

Neuroticism and extraversion as predictors of first-lifetime onsets of depression, anxiety, and suicidality in high-risk adolescents.

There is substantial evidence that personality traits, in particular neuroticism and extraversions predict depressive and anxiety episodes as well as suicidal ideation. However, little research has examined whether these traits predict the first onset of depressive and anxiety disorders and suicidal ideation. Moreover, the few studies to date have not adjusted for pre-existing subthreshold symptoms, assessed dimensionally. In this study, 144 adolescents were assessed at baseline, 9-, and 18-month follow-ups. Neuroticism and extraversion were assessed via self-report, and depressive and anxiety

Neuroticism as a Common Factor in Depression and Anxiety Associated with Multiple Sclerosis-A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Left undiagnosed and untreated, the association between multiple sclerosis and mental health difficulties significantly increases the multimorbidity risk in these patients. Hence, the purpose of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to estimate the prevalence of neuroticism, depression, and anxiety in MS and to explore the cumulative impact of these psychological factors on the disease expression. METHODS: A literature search was conducted on PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, and Google Scholar databases, according to the PRISMA guidelines. Also, the potential risk of bias wa

Emotion dysregulation and neuroticism as moderators of group Unified Protocol effectiveness outcomes for treating emotional disorders.

BACKGROUND: The personality dimension neuroticism and difficulties in emotional regulation (ER) are two variables closely related to the onset, course, and maintenance of emotional disorders (EDs). The Unified Protocol for the Transdiagnostic Treatment of Emotional Disorders (UP) is a treatment specifically designed to address neuroticism by training in adaptive ER skills and has been shown to be effective in reducing difficulties in ER. However, the specific impact of these variables on treatment outcomes is not entirely clear. The aim of the present study was to explore the moderating role o

Neuroticism mediates the association between childhood abuse and the well-being of community dwelling adult volunteers.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies reported that the experience of maltreatment in childhood reduces subjective well-being in adulthood and that neuroticism is negatively associated with subjective well-being. However, the interrelationship between childhood maltreatment, adult life events, neuroticism, and subjective well-being has not been analyzed to date. METHODS: A total of 404 adult volunteers provided responses to the following questionnaires: 1) Childhood Abuse and Trauma Scale, 2) Life Experiences Survey, 3) Neuroticism Subscale of the Shortened Eysenck Personality Questionnaire-Revised, a

Gene-environment interaction study on the polygenic risk score for neuroticism, childhood adversity, and parental bonding.

The present study examines whether neuroticism is predicted by genetic vulnerability, summarized as polygenic risk score for neuroticism (PRSN), in interaction with bullying, parental bonding, and childhood adversity. Data were derived from a general population adolescent and young adult twin cohort. The final sample consisted of 202 monozygotic and 436 dizygotic twins and 319 twin pairs. The Short Eysenck Personality questionnaire was used to measure neuroticism. PRSN was trained on the results from the Genetics of Personality Consortium (GPC) and United Kingdom Biobank (UKB) cohorts, yieldin
