OBJECTIVES: Social support may assist people's health as they age but less is known about how this relationship may differ for older adults living in rural communities. Knowledge of this information can inform the implementation of social prescribing, a care model aiming to address people's unmet non-medical social needs.
METHODS: This was a systematic rapid mixed-methods review following guidelines. We searched 10 electronic sources (all languages from 2000 and later) for peer-reviewed studies; our last search was on May 5, 2025. We followed the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) mixed-methods ap

BACKGROUND: Canada's National Microbiology Laboratory offers diagnostic testing of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) and related prion diseases. Since 2016, the highly sensitive and specific end-point quaking-induced conversion assay (EP-QuIC) of CSF samples has been used for antemortem CJD diagnostic testing alongside tests for surrogate biomarkers 14-3-3 and hTau. To assess EP-QuIC's utility, we undertook a retrospective study of Canadian CJD diagnostic testing conducted between 2016 and 2024.
METHODS: Using CJD CSF test results collected between 2016 and 2024, we analyzed the CJD incidence i

An 8-month-old intact male Labrador retriever dog from New Brunswick was referred to the Atlantic Veterinary College Small Animal Internal Medicine service (Prince Edward Island) for evaluation of marked hypercalcemia, polyuria-polydipsia, and urinary incontinence. Thoracic radiographs revealed a nonspecific, patchy-to-diffuse, interstitial-to-alveolar lung pattern, despite the absence of respiratory signs or abnormal lung auscultation. Fecal examination by Baermann analysis identified 1st-stage larvae of Angiostrongylus vasorum. Although A. vasorum has been documented in wild canid population

Increasing temperatures due to climate change have contributed to a northward range expansion of Ixodes scapularis ticks in Canada. These ticks harbour pathogens of public and animal health significance, including Borrelia burgdorferi and Anaplasma phagocytophilum, which cause Lyme disease and anaplasmosis, respectively, in humans, dogs and horses, and Borrelia miyamotoi, which causes a flu-like relapsing fever in humans. To address the risks associated with these vector-borne zoonotic diseases, continuous tick surveillance is advised. This study examined spatial patterns of B. burgdorferi, B.

RATIONALE: For traumatic upper limb amputees, the prohibitive cost of a custom-made prosthesis brings an insufferable financial burden for their families in developing countries. Three-dimensional (3D) printing allows for creating affordable, lightweight, customized, and well-fitting prosthesis, especially for the growing children.
PATIENT CONCERNS: We presented a case of an 8-year-old boy, who suffered a traumatic right wrist amputation as result of a mincing machine accident. The patient was immediately sent to the emergency orthopedics department after the accident.

INTRODUCTION: Composite resin restorations are widely used in restorative dentistry; however, their long-term aesthetic success depends on color stability and surface integrity. Daily exposure to mouthwashes may influence these properties. This study aimed to evaluate and compare the effects of different mouthwash formulations on the color stability and surface roughness of Tetric N-Ceram Nanohybrid (Ivoclar Vivadent, Schaan, Liechtenstein) and Tetric N-Ceram Bulk-Fill (, Ivoclar Vivadent, Schaan, Liechtenstein) composites.

Millions of Lyme disease vector ticks are dispersed annually by songbirds across Canada, but often overlooked as the source of infection. For clarity on vector distribution, we sampled 481 ticks (12 species and 3 undetermined ticks) from 211 songbirds (42 species/subspecies) nationwide. Using PCR, 52 (29.5%) of 176 Ixodes ticks tested were positive for the Lyme disease spirochete, Borrelia burgdorferi s.l. Immature blacklegged ticks, Ixodes scapularis , collected from infested songbirds had a B. burgdorferi infection prevalence of 36% (larvae, 48%; nymphs, 31%). Notably, Ixodes affinis is repo

BACKGROUND: Pulsed field ablation (PFA) has emerged as a promising method for pulmonary vein isolation (PVI) due to its myocardial-selective mechanism and a favorable safety profile. Among the available technologies, Farapulse (Boston Scientific Corporation, Marlborough, USA) and Varipulse (Biosense Webster Inc, New Brunswick, USA) are the two leading PFA systems. However, comparative data regarding their perioperative performance and impact on myocardial injury remain limited. This study aimed to evaluate and compare perioperative outcomes and myocardial injury, assessed by postprocedural tro

Extended-release buprenorphine (Bup-XR) is commonly used to manage postoperative pain in rodents while minimizing stress related to handling. An FDA-indexed Bup-XR formulation is commercially available (Ethiqa XR; Fidelis Animal Health, New Brunswick, NJ) and is indicated for the control of postprocedural pain in multiple species, including rats. Despite its widespread use in multiple rat strains, the safety and efficacy of Bup-XR in the August Copenhagen Irish (ACI) rat strain has not been reported, particularly when it is combined with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and local

UNLABELLED: Experts highlight the urgent need to increase clinical capacity for the early diagnosis and treatment of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD). FASD is a multifaceted and complex diagnosis that requires multidisciplinary care, yet few specialized clinics exist. Individuals often navigate the healthcare system for years before receiving a diagnosis. To better understand the pre-diagnostic healthcare trajectories of children and adolescents with FASD, this study aimed to describe the following: (i) the number and types of healthcare professionals consulted; and (ii) the number and t

BACKGROUND: Lyme disease is the most commonly reported vector-borne disease in the temperate world. It is emerging in central and eastern Canada due to spread of the tick vector Ixodes scapularis into and within Canada to form new areas of environmental risk known as Lyme disease-endemic areas. Identifying the geographic location of Lyme disease-endemic areas is important to identify the population at risk, target interventions, and inform the clinical diagnosis of Lyme disease patients.
OBJECTIVE: To provide an up-to-date picture of current and emerging areas of Lyme disease risk in eastern
