Pyoderma gangrenosum--response to topical nitrogen mustard.

We report a 69-year-old caucasian male patient with long-standing pyoderma gangrenosum; the lesions preceded the appearance of an IgA monoclonal gammopathy by 2 years. A number of systemic treatments, including high dose steroids and immunosuppressive agents, were poorly tolerated and resulted in serious side-effects. The skin and haematological conditions, however, were kept under control for 2 years with regular plasmapheresis. Pyoderma gangrenosum recurred as vascular access became exhausted but new lesions healed completely with topical application of 20% nitrogen mustard.

Neutrophils, nitrogen oxides, and inflammatory bowel disease.

The etiologic factors responsible for IBD remain only speculative. It does appear that the inappropriate activation of the immune system, whether by immune complex deposition, infectious agents or vascular impairment, is important in the pathogenesis of these diseases. Interaction of certain cytokines known to be produced in human IBD with specific immune cells such as neutrophils and macrophages results in the induction of the enzyme NO. synthase with the concomitant release of large amounts of NO.. Nitric oxide is known to mediate many of the pathophysiological alterations associated with IB

Urea nitrogen excretion in critically ill children.

Urinary urea nitrogen (UUN) excretion as an index of both total nitrogen excretion and protein catabolism was assayed in 32 children (aged 2 months to 15 years, median 6 years) (50% mechanically ventilated) during an intensive care unit course of one to ten days (median three days). The daily UUN excretion was 4.38 +/- 2.22 gm/sq m (171 +/- 89 mg/kg) (N = 121 patient days). The average daily UUN excretion (N = 32 children) was well described by a linear regression equation for square meters of body surface area (BSA) (milligrams of UUN = 4,421.5 x BSA; r2 = .903). This linear relationship perm

Nitrogen-containing compounds in foundry mold emissions.

Nitrogen compounds have been identified in the decomposition products from several commonly used foundry sand binders. These compounds include nitrogen oxides, hydrogen cyanide, ammonia, simple aromatic amines, and isocyanates. The concentrations of these compounds in foundry mold emissions do not appear to be directly related to the nitrogen content of the organic binders. Measurable concentrations were observed in some cases, indicating the necessity for periodic, monitoring in the foundry. Adequate ventilation will permit the use of these binders. The substitution of nitrogen-free binders s

ATMOSPHERIC NITROGEN FIXATION BY METHANE-OXIDIZING BACTERIA.

Davis, J. B. (Socony Mobil Oil Co., Inc., Dallas, Tex.), V. F. Coty, and J. P. Stanley. Atmospheric nitrogen fixation by methane-oxidizing bacteria. J. Bacteriol. 88:468-472. 1964.-Methane-oxidizing bacteria capable of fixing atmospheric nitrogen were isolated from garden soil, pond mud, oil field soil, and soil exposed to natural gas, indicating a rather wide prevalence in nature. This may explain the high concentration of organic nitrogen commonly found in soils exposed to gas leakage from pipelines or natural-gas seeps. Added molybdenum was a requirement for growth in a nitrogen-free minera

Coupling bacterial nitrogen fixation to yeast whole-cell biocatalysis enables amine production using air as the sole nitrogen source.

BACKGROUND: Alkylamine production depends on ammonium produced via the energy-intensive, fossil-based Haber-Bosch process. Diazotrophic bacteria could offer a biological alternative by supplying nitrogen directly from air to heterotrophic whole-cell biocatalysts for alkylamine production. However, their integration with yeast production systems remains largely unexplored. RESULTS: Here, we evaluated the use of an ammonium-excreting strain of Azotobacter vinelandii (AZBB664) to supply nitrogen to an engineered Saccharomyces cerevisiae biocatalyst for vanillylamine production using air as the s

Warming outweighs nitrogen deposition in shaping rhizosphere microbial structure involved in carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus cycling in Ambrosia trifida.

INTRODUCTION: Ambrosia trifida, a harmful invasive plant, poses significant ecological and economic threats and is expected to spread further under future warming and nitrogen deposition scenarios. According to plant-soil feedback and enhanced mutualist hypothesis, invasive plants may gain a competitive edge by recruiting specific microorganisms. However, little is known about the composition and functional potential of its rhizosphere microbiome. METHODS: In this study, we combined metagenomics with widely targeted metabolomics to investigate the interactions between root exudates and soil m

Facile and controllable preparation of carbon microsphere for electro-driven nitrogen reduction: Accommodating nitrogen doping with hierarchical porous structure.

Driven by sustainable electricity, electrochemical nitrogen fixation under ambient conditions is considered as a promising strategy to generate low-concentrated NH3/NH4+. Under the principle of doping and porous engineering, nitrogen-doped carbon microsphere with hierarchical pores (NC-HP) is fabricated via pyrolyzing polymer microsphere. Hierarchical structure with macro-, meso- and micropores is obtained by assembling melamine/phenol-formaldehyde oligomers in Pickering droplets, with the assistance of triblock copolymer Pluronic F127. The regularity of mesopores is strongly affected by melam

Aphid infestation differently affects the defences of nitrate-fed and nitrogen-fixing Medicago truncatula and alters symbiotic nitrogen fixation.

Legumes can meet their nitrogen requirements through root nodule symbiosis, which could also trigger plant systemic resistance against pests. The pea aphid Acyrthosiphon pisum, a legume pest, can harbour different facultative symbionts (FS) influencing various traits of their hosts. It is therefore worth determining if and how the symbionts of the plant and the aphid modulate their interaction. We used different pea aphid lines without FS or with a single one (Hamiltonella defensa, Regiella insecticola, Serratia symbiotica) to infest Medicago truncatula plants inoculated with Sinorhizobium mel

KOH-modified hydrochar with nitrogen-fixing bacteria alleviates aluminum toxicity and mitigates acidification-driven nitrogen loss in soybean rhizosphere.

Soil acidification severely constrains crop production by reducing nitrogen bioavailability. Although hydrochar shows promise for soil remediation, its application in acidified soils remains challenging due to its intrinsic acidity. Here, we developed an innovative strategy combining KOH-modified hydrochar (KOHC) with nitrogen-fixing microbial aggregates (MGs) and investigated its effects on rhizosphere acidification and nitrogen cycling in soybean. Pot experiments and multi-omics analyses revealed that 2% KOHC-MGs treatment significantly promoted the aggregation of rhizosphere nitrogen-fixing

Closing Dichloramine Decomposition Nitrogen and Oxygen Mass Balances: Relative Importance of End-Products from the Reactive Nitrogen Species Pathway.

In drinking water chloramination, monochloramine autodecomposition occurs in the presence of excess free ammonia through dichloramine, the decay of which was implicated in N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) formation by (i) dichloramine hydrolysis to nitroxyl which reacts with itself to nitrous oxide (N2O), (ii) nitroxyl reaction with dissolved oxygen (DO) to peroxynitrite or mono/dichloramine to nitrogen gas (N2), and (iii) peroxynitrite reaction with total dimethylamine (TOTDMA) to NDMA or decomposition to nitrite/nitrate. Here, the yields of nitrogen and oxygen-containing end-products were quant

Plant Growth-Promoting Rhizobacteria Inoculation to Enhance Vegetative Growth, Nitrogen Fixation and Nitrogen Remobilisation of Maize under Greenhouse Conditions.

Plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) may provide a biological alternative to fix atmospheric N2 and delay N remobilisation in maize plant to increase crop yield, based on an understanding that plant-N remobilisation is directly correlated to its plant senescence. Thus, four PGPR strains were selected from a series of bacterial strains isolated from maize roots at two locations in Malaysia. The PGPR strains were screened in vitro for their biochemical plant growth-promoting (PGP) abilities and plant growth promotion assays. These strains were identified as Klebsiella sp. Nitrogen uptake from soil residual fertilizer by subsequent crops: regulatory effects of previous nitrogen application rate and subsequent irrigation regime.

INTRODUCTION: Soil residual fertilizer nitrogen (SRFN) represents an important nitrogen resource that can be reused by subsequent crops. METHODS: In this study, two independent 15N tracing experiments were conducted under two crop rotation systems ("pakchoi-pakchoi" and "pakchoi-tomato") to investigate the effects of previous nitrogen application rates (80, 120, 160 kg N/ha) and subsequent irrigation regimes (for pakchoi: 60%, 70%, 80% of field capacity; for tomato: 50%-60%-60%, 60%-70%-70%, 70%-80%-80%) on the uptake and utilization of SRFN by subsequent crops. Nitrogen in urban stormwater caused as significant algal growth response as simulated soil erosion runoff despite differences in nitrogen forms.

Urban stormwater can accumulate significant nutrients and other pollutants from the catchment, leading to water quality degradation in receiving waters. However, the impact of nutrients in urban stormwater on the ecological processes of receiving environments, particularly compared with other point and diffuse sources of nutrients, has not been well studied. Understanding how different nutrient sources affect ecological responses can improve catchment-scale nutrient management and prioritization. This study investigated how nutrients in urban stormwater impact algal growth response using stand

Chronic Nitrogen Deposition Alters Diazotrophic Community Composition, Reduces Biological Nitrogen Fixation, and Restructures Fungal-Diazotroph CO-Occurrence Networks in Deadwood.

Biological nitrogen fixation (BNF) by diazotrophs contributes to increasing nitrogen (N) availability in nutrient-poor deadwood during the decomposition process. However, chronically elevated atmospheric N deposition may increase N availability, thereby reshaping diazotrophic community and suppressing BNF. We simulated high N deposition by repeatedly applying ammonium-nitrate solution to deadwood of 13 tree species over 9 years (N addition) and compared diazotrophic community composition and BNF rates with untreated controls. Deadwood N concentrations increased over time in both control and N

Potential of enhanced efficiency nitrogen fertilizers in reducing nitrogen and carbon losses in a sandy soil integrated crop-livestock system.

The demand for food is increasing, which poses significant challenges to humanity's sustainable and sufficient food production. Using fertilizers with new technologies with a low environmental impact is becoming increasingly necessary. In this context, the industry has been creating alternatives to optimize the use of nitrogen (N) fertilizers, with the improvement of urea being crucial for sustainable agricultural production. The objective of this study was to assess the use of fertilizers with integrated technology, specifically urea NBPT + Duromide and formaldehyde urea, aiming to reduce N l

Ammonium-assimilating microbiome: A halophilic biosystem rationally optimized by carbon to nitrogen ratios with stable nitrogen conversion and microbial structure.

The contradiction between theoretical metabolism of ammonium assimilation and experiential understanding of conventional biosystems makes the rational optimization of the ammonium-assimilating microbiome through carbon to nitrogen (C/N) ratios perplexing. The effect of different C/N ratios on ammonium-assimilating biosystems was investigated in saline wastewater treatment. C/N ratios significantly hindered the nutrient removal efficiency, but ammonium-assimilating biosystems maintained functional stability in nitrogen conversions and microbial communities. With sufficient biomass, higher than
