Oxidation of N-hydroxy-l-arginine by hypochlorous acid to form nitroxyl (HNO).

Recent research has shown that nitroxyl (HNO) has important and unique biological activity, especially as a potential alternative to current treatments of cardiac failure. HNO is a reactive molecule that undergoes efficient dimerization and subsequent dehydration to form nitrous oxide (N(2)O), making its detection in solution or biologically relevant preparations difficult. Due to this limitation, HNO has not yet been observed in vivo, though several pathways for its endogenous generation have been postulated. Here, we investigate the oxidation of N-hydroxy-l-arginine (NOHA) by hypochlorous ac

Aged biochar stimulated ammonia-oxidizing archaea and bacteria-derived N2O and NO production in an acidic vegetable soil.

Both nitrous oxide (N2O) and nitric oxide (NO) emissions are typically high in greenhouse-based high N input vegetable soils. Biochar amendment has been widely recommended for mitigating soil N2O emissions in agriculture. However, knowledge of the regulatory mechanisms of fresh and aged biochar for both N2O and NO production during ammonia oxidation is lacking. Two vegetable soils with different pH values were used in aerobic incubation experiments with 2-phenyl-4,4,5,5-tetramethylimidazoline-1-oxyl 3-oxide (PTIO), 1-octyne and acetylene. The relative importance of ammonia-oxidizing archaea (A

Disentangling the source and loss effects of ship-related HONO on coastal ozone over China.

Tropospheric ozone (O3) pollution has become a major air quality challenge in China's coastal regions, where intensive shipping activities substantially perturb nitrogen oxides (NOx) and volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Nitrous acid (HONO) has been increasingly recognized as an important regulator of atmospheric oxidation and ozone formation; however, its role in mediating the impacts of ship emissions on coastal O3 remains insufficiently quantified. In this study, we employed the GEOS-Chem model to quantify the influence of ship-related HONO on surface O3 over coastal China during June 2017

Effects of prolonged N2O and barbiturate anesthesia on brain metabolism and pH in the dog.

The brain acid-base status and metabolites were measured in 17 mongrel dogs that were anesthetized with pentobartital (20-25 mg/kg initially and 2-4 mg/kg every 2 h thereafer), or initially anesthetized with sodium pentothal (20 mg/kg) and placed on nitrous oxide (70% N2O-30% 02) for 5-51/2 h under normoxic, normocapnic conditions. In comparison with the awake, unrestrained state, both anesthetics caused a significant metabolic acidosis in both plasma and cisternal CSF. No significant differences between anesthetics were found with: (1) acid-base status in plasma or brain ECF and ICF; (2) cere

Cost-effective abatement of industrial sources of nitrous oxide with methane for urgent climate mitigation.

Abatement of industrial emissions of nitrous oxide (N2O), a potent greenhouse gas and stratospheric ozone-depleting substance, offers a viable approach to urgent climate mitigation. However, existing N2O abatement processes require rigorous conditions ( > 400 °C) due to its inertia and high costs. Here we present a cost-effective technology enabling 99.99% N2O conversion at 150 °C and a high reaction rate of 9629.55 kgN2O kgPt-1 h-1 using CH4 as a reductant on Pt/HZSM-5. Mechanism studies reveal the key to this success lies in the reaction-induced Pt nanoparticles, which host monoatomic adsorb

Synthesizing evidence for the external cycling of NOx in high- to low-NOx atmospheres.

External cycling regenerating nitrogen oxides (NOx ≡ NO + NO2) from their oxidative reservoir, NOz, is proposed to reshape the temporal-spatial distribution of NOx and consequently hydroxyl radical (OH), the most important oxidant in the atmosphere. Here we verify the in situ external cycling of NOx in various environments with nitrous acid (HONO) as an intermediate based on synthesized field evidence collected onboard aircraft platform at daytime. External cycling helps to reconcile stubborn underestimation on observed ratios of HONO/NO2 and NO2/NOz by current chemical model schemes and ratio

Anesthesia for cesarean section V: effects of enflurane anesthesia on the respiratory adaptation of the newborn in elective cesarean section.

The new anesthetic inhalation agent, enflurane, is supposed to allow rapid induction and recovery. Experinece with this agent in obstetrics is limited. Enflurane was therefore studied in 14 pregnant women undergoing elective cesarean section. Its effects upon the respiratory adaptation of the newborn infants were followed during the first 3 hours, as judged by oxygen tensions and acid-base balance measurements in serial neonatal arterial samples. Results were compared with those from a previously studied group of women anesthetized with a barbiturate and nitrous oxide-oxygen. There were no dif

Pro-oxidant and antioxidant factors in acute intermittent porphyria: family studies.

Given the crucial role of iron and porphyrins in oxidative cellular damage in the chronic porphyrias, we undertook an extensive study in families with acute porphyrias to evaluate the possible role of similar oxidative damage in these diseases, whose natural history is often also complicated by neoplastic evolution. Four unrelated patients with acute intermittent porphyria (AIP) were studied together with 37 members of four different families. Aminolevulinic acid and porphobilinogen were measured in urine, and porphyrins in urine, plasma and stools. The activity of the congenitally deficient e

New processes in the environmental chemistry of nitrite: nitration of phenol upon nitrite photoinduced oxidation.

The role of nitrite as an environmental factor has been widely recognized. Nitrite is a relevant source of *OH in the atmosphere, both in the gas phase via photolysis of gaseous HNO2 and in atmospheric hydrometeors by photolysis of NO2-. In aqueous systems, *OH production through nitrite photolysis can be negligible due to the competition for light absorption by dissolved Fe(III), colloidal iron oxides, and nitrate. These photoexcited oxidants interact with NO2- and HNO2 to form *NO2, either directly or via formation of *OH. As a consequence, nitrite and nitrous acid may act as *NO2 rather tha

Topographic plasticity in primary visual cortex is mediated by local corticocortical connections.

The placement of monocular laser lesions in the adult cat retina produces a lesion projection zone (LPZ) in primary visual cortex (V1) in which the majority of neurons have a normally located receptive field (RF) for stimulation of the intact eye and an ectopically located RF (displaced to intact retina at the edge of the lesion) for stimulation of the lesioned eye. Animals that had such lesions for 14-85 d were studied under halothane and nitrous oxide anesthesia with conventional neurophysiological recording techniques and stimulation of moving light bars. Previous work suggested that a cand

Application-dependent effects of tea waste biochar on PFAS mobility and N2O and CH4 emissions in agricultural soil.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in agricultural soils can migrate into crops and may alter soil greenhouse gas emissions, yet remediation strategies rarely address these risks simultaneously. This study evaluated tea waste biochar (TWB) produced at 400, 500, and 600 °C and applied at 5-20 g per pot by whole-soil mixing or surface-layer placement in a simulated PFAS-contaminated soil-leachate-plant system. Perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) and perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) distributions, nitrous oxide (N2O) and methane (CH4) fluxes, and microbial responses were examined. TWB produced

Combined effects of high relative humidity and ultraviolet irradiation: Enhancing the production of gaseous NO2 from the photolysis of NH4NO3.

Free radicals and nitrogen-containing species produced by nitrate photolysis can affect various atmospheric chemical processes, and thereby the photochemical behavior of atmospheric nitrate aerosols has been attracting much attention. However, the photolysis mechanism of NH4NO3 and its products under different atmospheric conditions remain unclear. In this study, the effects of relative humidity (RH), pH, NH3, ultraviolet (UV) light intensity and halogen ions (Cl-, Br- and I-) on the photolysis of particulate NH4NO3 have been investigated through a flow tube reactor. The results show that RH c

Citric acid modified biochar application at a low dosage can synchronically mitigate the nitrogenous gas pollutants emission from rice paddy soils.

Raw biochar with high pH possibly stimulated ammonia (NH3) volatilization in the agricultural soil. We hypothesized that the modified biochar (MBC) with low pH can synchronically decrease the NH3 and nitrous oxide (N2O) losses. We performed a two-year experiment to clarify how citric acid MBC influence the NH3 volatilization and N2O emission as well as the underlying mechanisms. Two typical paddy soils, i.e., Hydragric Anthrosol and Haplic Acrisol, receiving equal urea N with 240 kg ha-1 but varied rates of MBC with 0, 5, 10, and 20 t ha-1 (named Urea, Urea + MBC5, Urea + MBC10, and Urea + MBC

Aerosol iodide accelerates reactive nitrogen cycling in the marine atmosphere.

Reactive nitrogen plays critical roles in atmospheric chemistry, climate, and geochemical cycles, yet its sources in the marine atmosphere, particularly the cause of the puzzling daytime peaks of nitrous acid (HONO), remain unexplained. Here we reveal that iodide enhances HONO production during aqueous nitrate photolysis by over tenfold under typical marine conditions. Laboratory experiments and molecular simulations confirm that HONO formation from nitrate photolysis is a surface-dependent process, and the extreme surface propensity of iodide facilitates nitrate enrichment at interfaces, redu

Trace Aldehydes in Solid Oral Dosage Forms as Catalysts for Nitrosating Secondary Amines.

Nitrosamine impurities may form during drug substance manufacturing processes. Here, we focus on nitrosamine impurity level growth in oral drug products during long term stability studies. Nitrosamine growth mechanisms in oral dosage forms are typically framed as due to nitrosating agents that can be formed in solutions of nitrous acid with a required pH value of around pH 5 or below. We strive in this work to bring awareness to pharmaceutical scientists that formaldehyde, common in oral dosage form excipients, has previously been shown in solution to catalyze the reaction between secondary am
