[Syndrome of rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorder and nocturia in Parkinson's disease].

AIM: Parasomnia, a syndrome of rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorder (RBD), is a common non-motor impairment in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD). The relationship between RBD with other symptoms of PD affecting night sleep, in particular, nocturia, is understudied. An aim of the study was to determine the symptoms related to night sleep disturbances in PD patients with RBD and assess the dynamics of these disturbances with the disease progression taking into account RBD onset. MATERIAL AND METHODS: One hundred and forty patients (72 male and 68 female) with PD without dementia (mea

[Management of nocturia: a nosological entity within lower urinary tract symptoms in men].

AIM: To review the definition, pathophysiology, impact and management of nocturia in men METHODS: We conducted a literature review using Medline and Embase with the following keywords: nocturia or nocturnal polyuria. RESULTS: Nocturia in men is a multifactorial condition that may results from prostate but also kidney, bladder, heart, or lung diseases. It affects up to 60 % of men over 70 years and is responsible for major morbidity (sleep disorders, depression, falls, fractures), especially in the elderly. Pathophysiologically, we distinguish nocturia related to excessive urine production fr

Short-term effects of systematized behavioral modification program for nocturia: a prospective study.

AIMS: This study is to investigate whether a repetitive education program for behavioral modification is necessary for the patients with nocturnal polyuria (NPU). MATERIALS AND METHODS: A prospective single-arm study was carried out and 82 patients with NPU were analyzed. We developed a 30-min systematized behavioral modification program (SBMP), which consisted of (1) watching videos about normal physiology of storing and emptying function of urine, (2) regulation of fluid intake, (3) explanation by giving specific examples, and (4) discussion with a specialized nurse practitioner. Patients r

The evaluation of nocturia in patients with lower urinary tract symptoms suggestive of benign prostatic hyperplasia and the analysis of the curative effect after medical or placebo therapy for nocturia: a randomized placebo-controlled study.

BACKGROUND: To study nocturia in patients with lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) suggestive of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) after medical or placebo treatment. METHODS: Patients with LUTS suggestive of BPH from several community clinics were included. Patients completed the International Prostate Symptom Score (I-PSS) questionnaire and a 3-day voiding diary. Urinalysis, prostate-specific antigen (PSA) measurement, and prostate ultrasonography were performed. Nocturnal polyuria (NP) was defined as a nocturnal urine fraction exceeding one third of the daily urine output in elderly men.

The Afferent Threshold Hypothesis: A Unified Neural Framework for Functional Bladder Capacity and Nocturia.

The Weiss nocturia indices have structured clinical thinking about nocturia for over 2 decades. By deriving simple ratios from the frequency-volume chart, they classify nocturia into nocturnal polyuria, reduced nocturnal bladder capacity, and mixed etiology. The arithmetic is sound. But the framework rests on an unexamined assumption: that the maximum voided volume, almost always the first morning void, represents "bladder capacity," and that the gap between this value and daytime voided volumes reflects normal physiology. We propose that what the frequency-volume chart measures during wakeful

Application of the Sleep C.A.L.M. Tool for Assessing Nocturia in a Large Nationally Representative Cohort.

PURPOSE: Nocturia significantly impacts patients' quality of life but remains insufficiently evaluated and treated. The "Sleep C.A.L.M." system categorizes the factors thought to collectively reflect most underlying causes of nocturia (Sleep disorders, Comorbidities, Actions [i.e., modifiable patient behaviors such as excess fluid intake], Lower urinary tract dysfunction, and Medications). The purpose of this study was to assess the association of nocturia with the Sleep C.A.L.M. categories using a nationally representative dataset. METHODS: Retrospective analysis of the National Health and N

Different effects of GsMTx4 on nocturia associated with the circadian clock and Piezo1 expression in mice.

OBJECTIVES: Nocturia is a major problem in geriatric patients. Clock genes regulate circadian bladder function and Piezo type mechanosensitive ion channel component 1 (Piezo1) that senses bladder fullness. We utilized WT and Clock mutant (ClockΔ19/Δ19: nocturia phenotype) mice to determine if the effects of GsMTx4, a Piezo1 inhibitor, is dependent on circadian Piezo1 expression in the bladder. METHODS: We compared voiding behavior in mice after the administration of vehicle, low dose, or high dose of GsMTx4. Intraperitoneal injections (IP) were performed at Zeitgeber time (ZT) 0, lower Piezo1

Nocturnal polyuria and nocturia relief in patients treated with solifenacin for overactive bladder symptoms.

The objectives of this study are to determine whether patients with overactive bladder (OAB) and nocturia achieved relief of their nighttime voiding symptoms when treated with solifenacin and whether having nocturnal polyuria (NP) affected that response. The patients pooled from four phase III clinical trials were evaluated for reductions in nocturia episodes after treatment with solifenacin (5 or 10 mg) or placebo. A second analysis was performed in patients with and without NP. The patients treated with solifenacin experienced statistically significant reductions in nocturia episodes; median
