The efficacy of support vector machines in modelling deviations from the Beer-Lambert law for optical measurement of lactate.

Lactate is an important biomarker with a significant diagnostic and prognostic ability in relation to life-threatening conditions and diseases such as sepsis, diabetes, cancer, pulmonary and kidney diseases, to name a few. The gold standard method for the measurement of lactate relies on blood sampling, which due to its invasive nature, limits the ability of clinicians in frequent monitoring of patients' lactate levels. Evidence suggests that the optical measurement of lactate holds promise as an alternative to blood sampling. However, achieving this aim requires better understanding of the op

Classification of ECG heartbeats using nonlinear decomposition methods and support vector machine.

Classifying electrocardiogram (ECG) heartbeats for arrhythmic risk prediction is a challenging task due to minute variations in the amplitude, duration and morphology of the ECG signal. In this paper, we propose two feature extraction approaches to classify five types of heartbeats: normal, premature ventricular contraction, atrial premature contraction, left bundle branch block and right bundle branch block. In the first approach, ECG beats are decomposed into intrinsic mode functions (IMFs) using ensemble empirical mode decomposition (EEMD). Later four parameters, namely the sample entropy,

A nonlinear two compartmental fractional derivative model.

This study presents a new nonlinear two compartmental model and its application to the evaluation of valproic acid (VPA) pharmacokinetics in human volunteers after oral administration. We have used literature VPA concentrations. In the model, the integer order derivatives are replaced by derivatives of real order often called fractional order derivatives. Physically that means that the history (memory) of a biological process, realized as a transfer from one compartment to another, is taken into account with the mass balance conservation observed. Our contribution is the analysis of a specific

Sample entropy of the main atrial wave predicts spontaneous termination of paroxysmal atrial fibrillation.

Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common arrhythmia in clinical practice. In the first stages of the disease, AF may terminate spontaneously and it is referred as paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (PAF). In this respect, the prediction of PAF termination or maintenance could avoid unnecessary therapy and contribute to take the appropriate decisions on its management. The aim of this work is to predict non-invasively the spontaneous termination of PAF episodes by analyzing the variation of atrial activity (AA) organization. The organization increases as a consequence of the decrease in the numb

Susceptible host availability modulates climate effects on dengue dynamics.

Experiments and models suggest that climate affects mosquito-borne disease transmission. However, disease transmission involves complex nonlinear interactions between climate and population dynamics, which makes detecting climate drivers at the population level challenging. By analysing incidence data, estimated susceptible population size, and climate data with methods based on nonlinear time series analysis (collectively referred to as empirical dynamic modelling), we identified drivers and their interactive effects on dengue dynamics in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Climatic forcing arose only whe

The impact of Time Delay on a Prey-Predator Model with Crowley-Martin Response Type and Migration in the Predator.

This article examines the dynamics of one prey and two predator populations. The predator populations migrate between two areas. The model incorporates a Crowley-Martin response and a time delay. This study reveals several novel dynamical behaviors of populations, with and without time delay. The existence of extinction and coexistence equilibrium points is investigated using a linearization approach and the Routh-Hurwitz criteria to determine the stability. This study explores the impact of time delay by identifying the delay margin at which the time delay destabilizes the equilibrium point.

Pronounced Nonlinear Traits at Epileptic Seizure Onset and Offset.

Abrupt qualitative changes of the dynamics of complex systems that consist of a large number of dynamical units like the human brain are governed by nonlinear processes. A typical example of such a phenomenon is the peri-ictal transition of focal onset seizures. However, the reliable extraction of nonlinear features from short data segments is a highly nontrivial task. We apply a recently introduced method of nonlinear signal analysis that requires neither any kind of phase space reconstruction, necessary e.g. for the estimation of the Lyapunov exponent or the correlation dimension, nor the es

Evaluating atrial fibrillations through strange attractors dynamics.

Nonlinear dynamics is nowadays widely employed in the study of biological phenomena. In such context, taking into account that abnormal heart rhythms display chaotic behaviours, in our opinion, the specific attractor dynamics can constitute a method for evaluating various cardiac afflictions. By using mathematical procedures specific to nonlinear dynamics we devise a new method for evaluating atrial fibrillations. Using data from ECG signals, we construct strange attractors corresponding to the phase space, specific to the analyzed signals. We show that their dynamics reflect abnormal heart rh

Stochastic Differential Equations (SDEs) in NONMEM for Probing Population Pharmacokinetic Model Misspecification: Diagnostic Utility, Practical Considerations, and Future Directions.

Population pharmacokinetic (popPK) models are commonly developed using ordinary differential equations (ODEs) to describe deterministic concentration-time profiles, with unexplained variability typically attributed to interindividual variability or residual error. When model misspecification is present, system-level deviations may be absorbed into these conventional variability terms, making the source and magnitude of model inadequacy difficult to assess quantitatively. Stochastic differential equations (SDEs) provide an alternative framework by introducing an explicit system-noise component

Optimal Designs for Identifying Effective Doses in Drug Combination Studies.

We consider the optimal design problem for identifying effective dose combinations within drug combination studies where the effect of the combination of two drugs is investigated. Drug combination studies are becoming increasingly important as they investigate potential interaction effects rather than the individual impacts of the drugs. In this situation, identifying effective dose combinations that yield a prespecified effect is of special interest. If nonlinear surface models are used to describe the dose combination-response relationship, these effective dose combinations, also called iso

Global analyses of a state-dependent impulsive system for an SIRS model with a nonlinear incidence rate.

This paper establishes a state-feedback control system based on a nonlinear incidence SIRS model to explore the regulatory mechanism of infectious disease control. We develop a state-dependent impulsive model with threshold-triggered vaccination and isolation interventions once the susceptible population exceeds a predefined level. After investigating the basic properties of the ODE subsystem, we define and classify the Poincaré map and analyze its domain, range and monotonicity, which provides a theoretical basis for studying positive periodic solutions of the impulsive system under different

At the Edge of Chaos: Complexity Science and Critical Care in the Era of Artificial Intelligence.

Critical care unfolds at the crossroads of highly complex, nonlinear systems. The intersection of pathophysiology, human behavior, and clinical operations exemplifies this complexity. We can frame critical illnesses along two dimensions of complexity: a dysregulation axis, marked by hub failures, superlinear effects, and system uncoupling; and a temporal axis, defined by unpredictable nonlinear dynamics and path-dependent trajectories. Artificial intelligence (AI) offers tools to make sense of this complexity and can help guide decision-making in the intensive care unit. At the same time, comp

Assessing nonlinear gait characteristics in multiple sclerosis: Insights from a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Multiple sclerosis is a chronic neurodegenerative disease that often compromises gait, a key determinant of independence and quality of life. Nonlinear gait analysis may provide useful information about motor control alterations in people with multiple sclerosis, yet current evidence remains limited and fragmented. This systematic review synthesized research on nonlinear gait variables in this population, focusing on entropy, Lyapunov exponents, and detrended fluctuation analysis. METHODS: This systematic review followed PRISMA guidelines and included studies retrieved from PubMed

Mixing neural networks, continuation and symbolic computation to solve parametric systems of non linear equations.

We consider a square non linear parametric equations system F(P,X) = 0 which is constituted of n non differential equations in the n unknowns {x1,…,xn} that are the components of X while P={p1,…,pm} is a set of m parameters that play a role in the definition of the equations F. We assume that P is restricted to lie in a bounded region and we are interested in developing a solver for obtaining all real solutions exactly (a notion that is defined in the paper) for any parameter values within the bounded region. The starting point of the proposed approach is that we assume that a numerical method

Biomechanical Assessment Methods Used in Chronic Stroke: A Scoping Review of Non-Linear Approaches.

Non-linear and dynamic systems analysis of human movement has recently become increasingly widespread with the intention of better reflecting how complexity affects the adaptability of motor systems, especially after a stroke. The main objective of this scoping review was to summarize the non-linear measures used in the analysis of kinetic, kinematic, and EMG data of human movement after stroke. PRISMA-ScR guidelines were followed, establishing the eligibility criteria, the population, the concept, and the contextual framework. The examined studies were published between 1 January 2013 and 12

Towards Model-Informed Precision Dosing of Voriconazole: Challenging Published Voriconazole Nonlinear Mixed-Effects Models with Real-World Clinical Data.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Model-informed precision dosing (MIPD) frequently uses nonlinear mixed-effects (NLME) models to predict and optimize therapy outcomes based on patient characteristics and therapeutic drug monitoring data. MIPD is indicated for compounds with narrow therapeutic range and complex pharmacokinetics (PK), such as voriconazole, a broad-spectrum antifungal drug for prevention and treatment of invasive fungal infections. To provide guidance and recommendations for evidence-based application of MIPD for voriconazole, this work aimed to (i) externally evaluate and compare the

The effect of ambient temperature on hand, foot and mouth disease in Qingdao, China, 2014-2018.

Hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) is a kind of infection gastrointestinal disease. The present study aims to explore the association between ambient temperature and HFMD in Qingdao. A distributed lag nonlinear model with Poisson distribution was adopted to explore the effects of daily mean temperature on HFMD incidence. Our results found that the high temperature had acute and short-term effects and then declined rapidly along the lag days, with the maximum risk occurring 0 day of exposure. Compared with low temperature, higher effects were observed for high-temperature exposure. Overall, w

Nonlinear parametric quantile models.

Quantile regression is widely used to estimate conditional quantiles of an outcome variable of interest given covariates. This method can estimate one quantile at a time without imposing any constraints on the quantile process other than the linear combination of covariates and parameters specified by the regression model. While this is a flexible modeling tool, it generally yields erratic estimates of conditional quantiles and regression coefficients. Recently, parametric models for the regression coefficients have been proposed that can help balance bias and sampling variability. So far, how

Nonlinear viscoelastic properties of human dentin under uniaxial tension.

OBJECTIVE: Dentin is a viscoelastic tissue that contributes to the load distribution in human teeth and leads to their fracture resistance. Despite previous researches on the time-dependent behavior of dentin, it is not very clear whether the viscoelastic behavior of this tissue is linear or nonlinear, and what viscoelastic constitutive equations mechanically characterize it. Therefore, the aim of this study was to describe the viscoelastic behavior of human dentin and determine the best-fitting viscoelastic model for this tissue. METHODS: After preparation of human dentin specimens from 50 s

Algorithmic discovery of dynamic models from infectious disease data.

Theoretical models are typically developed through a deductive process where a researcher formulates a system of dynamic equations from hypothesized mechanisms. Recent advances in algorithmic methods can discover dynamic models inductively-directly from data. Most previous research has tested these methods by rediscovering models from synthetic data generated by the already known model. Here we apply Sparse Identification of Nonlinear Dynamics (SINDy) to discover mechanistic equations for disease dynamics from case notification data for measles, chickenpox, and rubella. The discovered models p
