A new psychometric tool for evaluating nonverbal social cue-following: regression-based normative data for children 6 to 10 years old.

The ability to follow nonverbal social cues is impaired in several disorders. Our aim was to collect normative data for the first psychometric test (TooN) that assesses this skill in children. The normative sample consisted of 339 typically developing children aged 6 to 10. TooN is a computerized tool that includes 120 trials in which children must press a button as soon as possible when an object appears on the right or left side of the screen. Each object is preceded by a video of a model gazing and/or pointing to the side where the object appears (i.e. congruent condition) or the opposite s

Noncredible effort on the Nonverbal-Medical Symptom Validity Test (NV-MSVT): Impact on cognitive performance in pediatric mild traumatic brain injury.

This study examined failure rates on the Nonverbal-Medical Symptom Validity Test (NV-MSVT) and its impact on cognitive performance in a sample of youths with mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI). Participants were 184 children and adolescents who presented to a multidisciplinary concussion clinic for a targeted neuropsychological evaluation. Performance Validity Tests (PVTs) were a part of the standard battery, including the NV-MSVT. Twenty-eight participants (15.2%) failed the NV-MSVT, none of whom displayed a genuine memory impairment profile (GMIP). Participants who failed the NV-MSVT perform

Intimacy as Related to Cortisol Reactivity and Recovery in Couples Undergoing Psychosocial Stress.

OBJECTIVE: The importance of recovery from stress is evident in times of high prevalence of stress-related diseases. Intimacy has been found to buffer psychobiological stress reactivity, suggesting that emotional and physical closeness might trigger biological mechanisms that underlie the health-beneficial effects of couple relationships. Here, we investigated whether couples' spontaneous expression of intimacy before and after psychosocial stress exposure in the laboratory reduced cortisol reactivity and accelerated recovery. METHODS: Data from 183 couples (366 individuals) were analyzed. Co

Equivalence classes in individuals with minimal verbal repertoires.

Studies from two different laboratories tested for equivalence classes in individuals with severe mental retardation and minimal verbal repertoires. In the first study, 3 individuals learned several matching-to-sample performances: matching picture comparison stimuli to dictated-word sample stimuli (AB), matching those same pictures to printed letter samples (CB), and also matching the pictures to nonrepresentative forms (DB). On subsequent tests, all individuals immediately displayed Emergent Relations AC, AD, BC, BD, CD, and DC, together constituting a positive demonstration of equivalence (

Verbal and nonverbal abstracting--problem-solving abilities and familial alcoholism in female alcoholics.

Women alcoholics (N = 54) had significantly worse performance on clusters of verbal and nonverbal abstracting - problem-solving tasks than peer nonalcoholic controls (N = 48). On the nonverbal cluster, alcoholic women with an alcoholic parent or sibling (FH+) performed significantly poorer than peer alcoholics without such a family history (FH-) and nonalcoholic FH+ and FH- groups. On the verbal cluster, FH+ alcoholics performed significantly worse than the nonalcoholic groups. FH- alcoholics did not differ significantly from the nonalcoholic groups on either of the clusters. There were no dif

Poor social performance of lonely people: lacking a skill or adopting a role?

A substantial literature has shown that lonely people differ from nonlonely people on a variety of measures of social performance. These differences have usually been conceptualized as a social skills deficit, which implies that lonely people lack the ability to perform appropriate and effective social behavior. Rather than a lack of this ability, the authors hypothesize that the adoption of passive interpersonal roles predisposes lonely people to exhibit inadequate performance. In order to test this hypothesis, lonely and nonlonely subjects were assigned to one of two roles: They either liste

Self-rating via video communication in children with disability - a feasibility study.

BACKGROUND: Different barriers may hinder children with developmental disabilities (DD) from having a voice in research and clinical interventions concerning fundamentally subjective phenomena, such as participation. It is not well-investigated if video communication tools have the potential to reduce these barriers. AIM: This study investigated the feasibility of administering a self-rating instrument measuring participation, Picture My Participation (PmP), via a video communication tool (Zoom), to children with DD. MATERIALS AND METHODS: PmP was administered to 17 children with DD (mean ag

Interventions to facilitate communication in autism.

The purpose of this article is to discuss research opportunities arising from the current literature in the area of communication. Six general themes are discussed, including (a) increasing spontaneity, initiations, and the variety of functions of language verbal and nonverbal children with autism exhibit; (b) assessing and teaching precursors relating to positive outcome; (c) the importance of family involvement in intervention programs; (d) best practices for implementation of communicative interventions; (e) the interrelationship between language and other behavioral symptoms of autism; and

Simultaneous speech and gesture decoding for multimodal communication in paralysis.

Stroke and neurodegenerative diseases can impair speech and nonverbal gestures, limiting natural communication. Brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) aim to restore these functions by translating neural activity into commands for external devices, although prior work has primarily focused on decoding speech or gestures in isolation. Here we show that neural signals recorded with a single high-density electrocorticography implant can support simultaneous decoding of speech and gestures in people with paralysis. We first show that isolated upper-limb and orofacial movements can be reliably decoded am

Characterizing Autism Traits in Toddlers with Down Syndrome: Preliminary Associations with Language, Executive Functioning, and Other Developmental Domains.

Children with Down syndrome (DS) show considerable variability in social-communication and cognitive profiles, and a subset meet criteria for co-occurring autism. In the present study, we examined the associations between developmental domains and autistic trait severity in toddlers with DS. Participants included 38 toddlers (M = 4.19 years, SD = 0.99) who completed a home-based assessment, including measures of language, fine motor, and visual reception skills. Caregivers also completed standardized questionnaires on communication and executive functioning. Multiple regression analyses tested

Avatar-Mediated Telepsychotherapy in a Metaverse-Informed Virtual Environment: Qualitative Study of User Experiences and Design Requirements.

BACKGROUND: Face-to-face psychotherapy remains the gold standard for mental health treatment; however, it faces accessibility barriers, including geographical constraints, costs, and stigma. Although videoconferencing psychotherapy addresses some limitations, challenges with engagement and therapeutic alliance persist. Avatar-mediated telepsychotherapy (AMT) in a metaverse-informed virtual environment has been proposed as a possible extension of digitally delivered mental health care, combining digital accessibility with enhanced presence through anonymous avatar-mediated communication. Agitation in Nonverbal Patients With Autism: The Role of Sensory Evaluation in Diagnosis and Management.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a complex neurodevelopmental condition often associated with communication barriers, sensory sensitivities, and behavioral challenges, including agitation. Identifying the underlying causes of acute agitation in nonverbal individuals with ASD can be difficult, leading to diagnostic delays and unnecessary medical interventions. We present a case of a 36-year-old nonverbal male with ASD who was admitted for severe agitation, self-injurious behaviors, and increased aggression towards family members. His medical history included epilepsy, hypertension, and prior o

Validation of factor structure of the neurodevelopmental parent report for outcome monitoring in down syndrome: confirmatory factor analysis.

INTRODUCTION: The Neurodevelopmental Parent Report for Outcome Monitoring (ND-PROM), initially developed to monitor developmental and behavioral functions in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), assesses symptoms across a wide range of domains relevant in Down syndrome (DS). METHODS: Psychometric properties of ND-PROM were assessed in 385 individuals with DS and 52 with a combined diagnosis of DS and ASD (DS+ASD), whose caregivers completed the ND-PROM questionnaire for a clinical visit in a specialized Down syndrome program at a tertiary pediatric hospital. Treatment of catatonic stupor with combination of modified electroconvulsive treatment and olanzapine: a case report.

This case report is about the combined use of modified electroconvulsive treatment and an atypical antipsychotic drug, olanzapine, in the treatment of a 20-year-old man with chronic and refractory catatonic stupor. This patient, with a preexisting diagnosis of autism, posturing, nonverbal communication, and contracture of lower extremities, displaying mutism, akinesia, and an extreme level of rigidity, waxy flexibility, and posturing, was diagnosed as with catatonic stupor. After hospitalization, the disease had progressed despite the treatment with an atypical antipsychotic drug, olanzapine.

Infantile autism: a syndrome of multiple primary deficits?

Attempts to explain infantile autism in terms of just one underlying neurological or psychological deficit may be misguided. As in the case of many neurological syndromes, autism may involve multiple functional deficits due to multiple coexistent neurological deficits. Comparison with Asperger's syndrome and the developmental dysphasias suggests that the autistic syndrome results from the coexistence of at least two distinct constellations of functional impairments: deficits in mechanical language skills, as in the developmental dysphasias; and deficits in social relatedness, play, and nonverb

Neuropsychological and behavioral outcomes of extremely low birth weight at age three.

Preterm (PT) birth is an established risk factor for high mortality and morbidity rates. Infants and school-aged children have been well-studied, but few have described neuropsychological and behavioral outcomes at preschool age. We compared a 2004-2006 preterm/extremely low birth weight (ELBW) cohort (PT/ELBW; N = 60) born ≤ 33 weeks gestation and <1,000 g with term-born participants (N = 90) at age 3. PT/ELBW subgroups (<26 weeks; 26-33 weeks) performed more poorly than the term-born group on verbal, nonverbal, fine motor, visual-motor, visual attention, noun fluency, early number concepts,

Machine Learning Enabled Fluorescent Anti-Freezing Core-Shell Hydrogel Realizing Deep-Sea Morse Code Communication for Human-Machine Interaction Engineering.

Underwater intelligent systems demand flexible materials with robustness, environmental tolerance, and functional integration. Hydrogels, which combine flexibility with conductivity, show promise but often fail under harsh conditions. Herein, an antifreezing, antiswelling hydrogel with core-shell architecture was fabricated by ion concentration gradient modulation. Polyacrylamide/poly(acrylic acid) pregel immersed in Al3+ solution produced a concentration gradient. The external layer generates a dense metal oxide film, acting as a robust protective armor, while the inner polymer network preser

[Diagnosis and Therapeutic Interventions in Autism Spectrum Disorders in Adulthood].

Autism spectrum disorders (ASD) are characterized by disturbed social interaction and communication as well as stereotyped or repetitive behaviors and interests. Although adults with ASD often acquire complex compensatory strategies that help them master social situations in a rule-based fashion, they still show impairments in intuitive processing of social signals and especially nonverbal communication in complex everyday situations. This constitutes a particular challenge for the psychotherapy of ASD. Psychotherapists are required to explicitly inform and act as an agent of the non-autistic

Selection for universal facial emotion.

Facial expression is heralded as a communication system common to all human populations, and thus is generally accepted as a biologically based, universal behavior. Happiness, sadness, fear, anger, surprise, and disgust are universally recognized and produced emotions, and communication of these states is deemed essential in order to navigate the social environment. It is puzzling, however, how individuals are capable of producing similar facial expressions when facial musculature is known to vary greatly among individuals. Here, the authors show that although some facial muscles are not prese

Postoperative Pain in Children: A Real Emergency.

The topic of acute pain, especially post-operative pain, risks being unfairly relegated to the background. Although significant progress has been made in pediatric anesthesia, with a drastic reduction in perioperative mortality and morbidity, much remains to be done in terms of organization and training. Artificial intelligence can potentially help here. Combining data from large, well-structured datasets can provide predictive models that guide patients at higher risk of developing pain. Having reliable alerts would allow resources to be used not only more effectively, but also more rationall
