BACKGROUND: Nurse practitioner-sensitive outcomes (NPSOs) are critical indicators of the quality and effectiveness of nursing care provided to older adults. These outcomes, which include metrics such as falls, pressure ulcers, infection rates, frailty, delirium, length of stay, hospital readmissions, and quality of life (QoL), are essential for assessing the impact of nurse practitioners (NPs) and enhancing patient safety. Despite their importance, the current literature on NPSOs in services for older adults remains limited. This scoping review aims to address this gap by systematically mappin

Introduction: Nurse practitioners (NPs) are authorizing providers for medical cannabis in many states, and may serve as a primary care clinician. We report findings from a nationally distributed 2-h continuing education (CE) module aimed to improve knowledge, confidence, and willingness to communicate with patients about cannabis. Methods: Data were electronically obtained from the CE platform pre- and post-test (n=289) and a follow-up survey sent within 3 months postcompletion (n=184, 63%). Pre- and post-testing assessed cannabis pharmacodynamics, law, evidence-based use, metabolism, pharmaco

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: In Canada, nurse practitioners (NP) were legally authorised to prescribe controlled drugs and substances (CDS) in 2012. The objective of this study was to understand current NP-CDS prescribing in Alberta, Manitoba and Saskatchewan, Canada. This study is a component of a larger three-phase survey of NP practice patterns in these same provinces.
BACKGROUND: Nurse practitioners are nurses with a graduate degree who have the legal authority to perform expanded functions in health systems, including prescribing CDS. Given the novelty of CDS prescribing for NPs in Canada, littl

Dental caries is the most common infectious disease of children. The majority of children in the United States who experience dental decay are from low-income, minority families. Many low- income, minority families are at risk for homelessness and, indeed, mothers with children are the fastest growing homeless group. Once homeless, families end up in shelters. Shelters are a unique source for the provision of health care; however, the provision of dental care to mothers and children in shelters is limited. At a shelter-based clinic, of a total number of children assessed in a 24-month period (

Traditionally in the UK, the transportation of the critically ill child to a paediatric intensive care unit has been carried out by a medically led team of doctors and nurses. However, in countries such as the USA and Canada, appropriately trained nurse practitioners have proven to be competent in the transportation of these vulnerable children. This nurse-led team model has also been shown to be successful in the speciality of neonatal care in the UK. The impact of changes in the National Health Service (NHS) has led to an increased demand for the transportation of the child requiring paediat

A number of risk factors for malnutrition in the elderly have been identified, but their relative importance has yet to be established. General practitioners and public health nurses were interviewed to elicit the relative weights placed on 6 major risk factors when assessing nutritional risk in the elderly (living alone, recent bereavement, denture problems, mobility problems, psychiatric morbidity and multiple medication use). Participants rated risk for 35 hypothetical cases, described by their status on the 6 risk factors. Multiple regression models of these judgments revealed a consistent

This scoping review examined and synthesised existing literature on models of care involving Mental Health Nurse Practitioners (MHNPs) practising or consulting within Emergency Department (ED)-based Emergency Mental Health (EMH) services. EDs are a key access point for mental health care and often provide first contact or after-hours support for people experiencing crisis, reinforcing their central role within the mental health system. The review highlights the need for timely, safe and specialised mental health care within EDs to strengthen the quality, safety and responsiveness of EMH servic

BACKGROUND: While the nursing profession has advocated for workforce diversity, limited research has examined how institutional inclusion efforts are associated with the experiences of nurse practitioners (NPs), particularly in hospital settings.
PURPOSE: To examine whether institutional inclusion efforts were associated with NPs' strong recommendation of their hospital and whether this relationship was explained by NPs' assessments of organizational climate.
METHODS: This cross-sectional study analyzed 2023 data from 742 NPs across 412 U.S. hospitals, drawing on the Penn Nurses4All Survey,

BACKGROUND: In 2016, the Comprehensive Addiction Recovery Act permitted nurse practitioners (NPs) and physician assistants (PAs) to obtain a waiver to prescribe buprenorphine to treat opioid use disorder (OUD), with the goal of increasing access to this treatment. This study's purpose was to describe the buprenorphine prescribing practices of NPs and PAs and compare the barriers rural and urban providers face delivering treatment.
METHODS: From the October 2018 Drug Enforcement Administration list of providers with the waiver to prescribe buprenorphine, all rural NPs and PAs (1,057) and a ran

INTRODUCTION: Primary care providers, particularly pediatric nurse practitioners, are an integral force involved in tackling the obesity epidemic among youth. The majority of nurse practitioners, however, report low proficiency regarding their ability to adequately prevent and treat pediatric overweight. In response, the National Association of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners (NAPNAP) developed the evidence-based Healthy Eating and Activity Together (HEAT) Clinical Practice Guideline (CPG) to improve provider behavior and efficacy.
METHOD: Thirty-five nurse practitioners attending the NAPNAP An

A detailed clinical examination of the newborn performed by nurse-midwife practitioners has been recommended as a standard practice throughout the most western countries. The purpose of this study was to evaluate and compare the knowledge, attitude and practice of the primary and secondary care nurse-midwife practitioners on developmental dysplasia of hip (DDH) before and after a structured lesson. The study was designed as a cross-sectional, pre- and post-test. The number of participants from primary care and secondary care nurse-midwife practitioners were 155 and 208, respectively. A structu

Nurse Practitioners (NPs) are essential contributors to the contemporary cardiology workforce. The increasing prevalence of cardiovascular disease, coupled with persistent clinician shortages, has accelerated the integration of NPs across ambulatory and acute settings. This article explores the contributions of NPs to cardiology care across a continuum from longitudinal patient care and prevention to leadership and translational science. Investment in NP education, training, and role utilization will be pivotal to shaping an efficient, patient-centered cardiology workforce for the future.

BACKGROUND: Flexible sigmoidoscopy is a technical skill that has been successfully performed by suitably trained colorectal nurse practitioners in the USA. However, no recognised training course exists for nurse practitioners in the UK.
AIMS: To design and evaluate a training programme for nurse endoscopists.
METHODS: A multidisciplinary committee of nurses and clinicians developed a structured programme of study and practice. This involved a staged process of observations, withdrawals, and ultimately, full procedures. Once training had been completed the nurse practitioner was permitted to

PURPOSE: Point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) serves as a critical diagnostic tool in emergency medicine; however, a persistent gap remains between competency acquired during training and consistent clinical application. This study sought to identify barriers and facilitators influencing POCUS examination frequency among emergency medicine (EM) residents and emergency nurse practitioners after institutional training, and to examine the association between individual-level factors and the frequency of POCUS examinations.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: This retrospective study was conducted in the Departmen

Background/Objectives: Registered nurse (RN) prescribing is increasingly discussed as a strategy to improve primary-care access, medication follow-up, chronic disease management, and service responsiveness. The available evidence, however, does not directly test a single coordinated RN prescriber-family physician/nurse practitioner (FP/NP) model. This integrative review synthesized heterogeneous evidence relevant to how RN prescribing may be organized within team-based primary care. Methods: A structured integrative review approach was used to map evidence from nurse and non-medical prescribin

PURPOSE: With radiology practices increasingly employing nonphysician practitioners (NPPs), we aimed to characterize specific NPP clinical roles.
METHODS: Linking 2017 to 2019 Medicare data sets, we identified all claims-submitting nurse practitioners and physician assistants (together NPPs) employed by radiologists. NPP-billed services were identified, weighted by work relative value units, and categorized as (1) clinical evaluation and management (E&M), (2) invasive procedures, and (3) noninvasive imaging interpretation. NPP practice patterns were assessed temporally and using frequency ana
