[Nurses' behaviours and justifications for bladder training].

AIM: The aim of the study was to assess the variability of implementation of bladder training (BT) before removal of indwelling catheter and the reasons for implementing it or not. METHODS: A multicentre survey was conducted administering a questionnaire to 338 nurses of 28 wards (medicine, surgery, urology and orthopedic wards) of 6 large hospitals in the Turin area. Seven clinical cases were proposed and for each nurses were asked to specify if they would use bladder training and the reasons for doing it or not. RESULTS: Two hundred and forty questionnaires (71%) were returned. Overall, on

Stop-smoking support: considerations for community nurses.

Smoking is the most preventable cause of ill health, and is associated with many long-term conditions. Around 24% of all deaths in Scotland in 2004 were attributed to smoking (NHS Health Scotland and ASH Scotland, 2007). This article provides background information on the health effects of smoking, and discusses issues around stop smoking support, highlighting some implications for community nurses who work with clients who want to stop smoking.

Patient-related violence against emergency department nurses.

In a finding that reflects international experiences, nurses in Australia have been identified as the occupation at most risk of patient-related violence in the health-care sector. A search of the literature was undertaken to explore this concept, with a focus on the emergency department and triage nurses. Significant findings included the fact that nurses are subjected to verbal and physical abuse so frequently that, in many instances, it has become an accepted part of the job. This attitude, combined with the chronic under-reporting of violent incidents, perpetuates the normalization of viol

Reframing professional development for first-line nurses.

Within a context of healthcare restructuring and a shift toward individualized continuing competency in Canada, this inductive, narrative inquiry explored positive learning experiences of first-line acute care nurses. The written stories of eight self-selected participants were collected and unstructured follow-up interviews were conducted. The stories and interview transcripts were examined using categorical-content and holistic-form analysis, and analyzed in light of literature relating to adult education and professional development in nursing. Emergent themes included life-changing learnin

Oppositional defiant disorder: information for school nurses.

Oppositional defiant disorder, one of the disruptive behavior disorders, has far-reaching consequences for the individual, family, school, community, and society. Early recognition allows interventions geared toward promotion of prosocial behaviors, possibly halting progression to the more deviant conduct disorder. Awareness of this disorder and associated comorbidities is the first step that enables the school nurse to use assessment techniques and to assist in planning of interventions for the child. Children at risk often show tendencies toward oppositional defiant disorder as early as pres

Ecomapping: an innovative research tool for nurses.

AIM: This paper explores the use of ecomaps as a research tool for capturing data, using the example of the dynamic nature of social networks from which informal carers of people living with motor neurone disease draw their support. BACKGROUND: The need for social support in relation to health maintenance and disease management has been identified in the literature but little has been published about ways to investigate support networks. Existing discussion in the literature about the use of ecomaps as a clinical tool in social work creates a valuable framework for data collection which can b

Do nurses exercise power in rehabilitation wards?

AIM: Nowadays, there is a change in nursing policy. The nurse-centred model is shifting to the patient-centred model. Decision-making is therefore transferred to the customer (Power to the Patient). Data from literature mainly deals with acute care and long-term care facilities. The aim of the study was to evaluate whether: i) a nurse-centred model is still effective in rehabilitation wards; ii) patients' dignity is nevertheless considered; iii) nurses experience role satisfaction in a rehabilitation setting. METHODS: A cross-sectional design was applied. Forty-eight nurses of our rehabilitat

Violence towards emergency department nurses by patients.

Emergency department (ED) violence is a significant problem in many hospitals. This study identified the incidence of violence by patients towards nurses in two EDs. Patient factors related to violence were identified and the circumstances surrounding the violent incident were described. Of the 71 ED nurses who participated, 50 (70%) reported 110 episodes of violence in a five-months period. That is approximately five violent incidents per week. Violence was reported most often on evening shifts (n=41, 37%). The nurses' perceived that the perpetrators of violence were under the influence of al

Critical thinking and accuracy of nurses' diagnoses.

Interpretations of patient data are complex and diverse, contributing to a risk of low accuracy nursing diagnoses. This risk is confirmed in research findings that accuracy of nurses' diagnoses varied widely from high to low. Highly accurate diagnoses are essential, however, to guide nursing interventions for the achievement of positive health outcomes. Development of critical thinking abilities is likely to improve accuracy of nurses' diagnoses. New views of critical thinking serve as a basis for critical thinking in nursing. Seven cognitive skills and ten habits of mind are identified as dim

Stress amongst district nurses: a preliminary investigation.

This paper presents the results of a pilot study investigating stress among district nurses in the north-west of England. Nurses completed questionnaires covering job satisfaction, mental health, stress, Type A behaviour, health behavior, coping skills and demographic details. A specific measure of stress was developed following in-depth interviews with primary care professionals, including district nurses. A total of 79 district nurses took part in the study. The major sources of stress isolated by the district nurses related to: time pressure, administrative responsibility, having too much t

Cadaveric donotransplantation: nurses' attitudes, knowledge and behaviour.

Human organ transplantation is an important treatment for certain medical conditions, and for irreversible organ failure. There is a shortfall in the number of organs required for transplantation. The close and continuous proximity of nurses to potential donors and their families make them critical links in the organ donation process. Therefore, success in organ procurement may depend on nurses' awareness and integration of knowledge about donotransplantation (the process of organ/tissue donation and transplantation). Postal questionnaires were distributed throughout the United Kingdom (UK) to

The symbolism and myth surrounding nurses' uniform.

This article addresses nurses' uniform from the perspective of the symbolic, myth, legend and competing discourse. The analysis touches upon why nurses working with people who have learning disabilities discarded the nurses' uniform and why other nurses may consider doing so, particularly if suitable alternatives exist. The analysis draws from various areas of nursing practice, including the nursing of disabled people, elderly people and people with learning disabilities. Nurses' uniform is revealed as a totem of considerable potency such that to wear a uniform in just any setting or context h

Some lousy questions for home health nurses.

Pediculosis continues to be a widespread problem for both the public and health care professionals, including home health nurses. Dealing with this problem is complicated by a number of factors, including questions concerning the efficacy and safety of the medications used and the level of knowledge of about this condition. Because pediculosis often is considered more as an embarrassing annoyance than a serious threat, it has a relatively low priority on the list of contemporary health care concerns. This article addresses several practical questions concerning the character and treatment of p
