Scabies: an itchy problem.

Scabies-a small word that can, and often does, impart great anxiety and apprehension among health care workers (HCWs). Yet the epidemiology associated with this human parasitic infestation is well understood, as are the mechanisms for both its treatment and control.

Dissatisfaction with working conditions associated with lower vaccine confidence, commitment and behaviors among nurses: A large scale cross-sectional survey in France.

BACKGROUND: Before, during, and after the COVID-19 pandemic, doctor shortages led many countries to expand nurses' role in their mass vaccination programs. Nonetheless, nurses often express marked vaccine hesitancy. Simultaneously, their working conditions have been deteriorating. OBJECTIVES: To study 1) the association between nurses' perceptions of their working conditions and their vaccination-related behaviors (vaccination recommendations to their patients), and 2) the mediating role in this associations of their trust in health authorities, vaccine confidence, and vaccine proactive effic

Moral distress in public health practice: Case studies from nursing education.

Moral distress in critical care nursing has been well studied; however, there is a gap in the literature related to moral distress among nurses and nursing students practicing in the community. This paper describes moral distress experienced during participation in the Interprofessional Care Access Network, a community-based nurse-led education and practice program providing longitudinal care coordination for underserved individuals and families in rural communities and urban neighborhoods. Two case studies represent client situations resulting in moral distress for nursing faculty and student

Stoma products, diet support and complication awareness for community care.

Managing stomas in the community requires a knowledge of stoma products, what the products are, when the products should be used and how to effectively use them. This articles discusses the products in detail and the possible complications associated with improper use. Diet also plays a crucial role and community nurses are often asked for advice by their patients. The author also explore the role of community nurses in ensuring that people living with a stoma do not feel isolated and that their quality of life is not impacted.

A Policy Analysis on the Death of Alex Pretti and the Imperative to Protect the US Nursing Workforce.

Violence against nurses is a systemic threat that compromises workforce safety and quality care, especially in HIV nursing. The death of Alex Jeffrey Pretti, an intensive care nurse, exemplifies broader patterns of violence affecting nurses both within and beyond clinical settings and represents inherent risks of militarization within democratic societies. This commentary reviews epidemiologic evidence on violence against nurses, situated within systems of oppression, and assesses legislative efforts to protect the nursing workforce. Effective protection requires structural interventions such

[Nursing Accountability in Protecting Children and Adolescents at Risk of Depression or Suicide: From Campus to Medical Care].

Ensuring the holistic health of children and adolescents is a responsibility shared by families and society. In recent years, protection issues related to children and adolescents have garnered increasing public attention due to several major social incidents such as abuse, assault, school bullying, and filicide-suicide. These concerns necessitate the implementation of collective prevention efforts. Clinical healthcare professionals and frontline community nurses serve as guardians of holistic health, and their ability to remain vigilant, identify risks early, and provide timely referrals or i

The relationship between nursing care perception and nurses' communication skills: from the perspective of inpatients - a cross-sectional study.

Effective communication skills among nurses, coupled with high-quality nursing care, are essential components of healthcare services. Both communication and care are abstract, multifaceted processes that are uniquely perceived by patients, with their effects directly impacting patient experiences. Thus, understanding patient perspectives is vital for delivering high-quality, patient-centered healthcare. This study aimed to examine inpatients' perceptions of nursing care, assess their views on nurses' communication skills, and explore the relationship between these perceptions. This cross-secti

Providers' assessment of barriers to effective management of hypertension and hyperlipidemia in community health centers.

We explored 251 providers' (47% licensed practical nurses, 27% registered nurses, 10% physicians, 10% physician assistants, 6% other) perceptions of barriers to effective management of hypertension and hyperlipidemia from 72 Midwest community health centers (CHCs). Optimal care for these diseases is difficult in any setting; little is known about the specific barriers CHCs face. Community health centers often have a multidisciplinary team that participates in patient care. Current models of quality improvement and chronic care management require virtually all CHC providers to know clinical gui

Adolescent homelessness, nursing, and public health policy.

Homelessness among American adolescents is not a new phenomenon. The United States has a long history of youth who are runaways and/or homeless. The majority of adolescents who are homeless believe that they have no acceptable housing placement options. The foster care system often fails to help youth deal with problems. The impact of homelessness on youth's social functioning and health status should be raised at the community level, particularly by community nurses and other health professions who interact with adolescents who are homeless. By using Kingdon's multiple streams model, nurses c

Oral care in people with dementia living in the community.

Oral health is recognised as an essential component of a person's overall wellbeing, increasingly so in people with dementia. As dementia progresses, a person diagnosed with the condition may become more dependent on the support of the family carer to meet their personal care needs. Similarly, community nurses may be one of the first health professionals that a family carer may call on when difficulties in maintaining good oral care become a concern. An understanding of some of the main concerns and resources available can be helpful for community nurses in helping their patients and their car

A district-wide examination of 75-year olds suggests discrimination in the provision of services.

The aim of this study was to assess the adequacy of existing services across a whole health district for those aged 75 years, in an attempt to detect shortfalls and biases in the provision of services. This study was carried out as a cross-sectional survey using community based nurses in the county of South Glamorgan. 1376 people in their 75th year who were registered with a general practitioner were visited, and their problems assessed by community based nurses. There was a marked difference in the results of the assessment for different services. It was estimated that 76% of the 75-year olds

Nutritional advice for community patients: insights from a panel discussion.

This article describes the conclusions of an expert panel that discussed four case studies; these were examples of patients typically encountered by nurses working in the community. The panel considered the nutritional and lifestyle advice that could be given by nurses relating to conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), depression, chronic fatigue syndrome, vulnerability to common infections, elderly care, recurrent urinary tract infection, antibiotic use, and risk of type 2 diabetes. A general conclusion was the importance of motivational interviewing techniques in achieving full u

Increased Nursing Participation in Multidisciplinary Rounds to Enhance Communication, Patient Safety, and Parent Satisfaction.

Effective communication among health care team members is a mainstay of patient safety, especially in a neonatal ICU (NICU), given small errors can have serious and life-threating consequences. Ineffective communication with families of hospitalized children can lead to decreased satisfaction and trust in the health care team. To enhance communication, the NICU nursing staff at the Johns Hopkins Children's Center spearheaded an initiative to create an enhanced nursing role in multidisciplinary patient rounds. Education of the nursing staff and other team members and the development of a roundi

Use of catheter maintenance solutions by community nursing staff: an assessment.

This article discusses catheter maintenance solutions, the way they are supposed to be used and the way they actually are being used in primary and community care in the UK. It discusses the knowledge that community nursing staff have regarding these solutions and the need for further education. Appropriate assessment from a suitably trained individual is recommended, resulting in both usage and cost being dramatically decreased, offering more appropriate management and the likelihood of decreasing the incidence of catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTI). The literature surroundin
