Overview of historical occupational exposure to trichloroethylene in China.

OBJECTIVES: Trichloroethylene (TCE) is a carcinogen that has been causally linked to kidney cancer and possibly other cancer sites including the liver and lymphatic system. Its use in China has increased since the early 1990s due to the growing metal and electronic industries. We aimed to summarize the major sources of occupational exposure to TCE over time in China. METHODS: Occupational TCE exposure assessments were extracted from both the Chinese and English scientific literature, as well as from industrial hygiene surveys performed in Guangdong, Tianjin, and Hong Kong. Weighted mean conce

Occupational and environmental exposures, the association with chronic sinusitis.

OBJECTIVES: To find the association between environmental and occupational exposures and chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) development. METHODS: The Preferred Reporting Items Of Systematic Reviews Guidelines were used when a systematic literature review was conducted to find all published cases of CRS by searching PubMed database and Google Scholar. Published articles between 1989 and 2021 that reported chronic and occupational rhinosinusitis were included. However, articles that reported allergic rhinitis or upper airway diseases and non-English articles were excluded from this study. RESULTS: A

Occupational Exposures and Esophageal Cancer: Prog Study.

Esophageal cancer is the sixth most common cause of cancer death worldwide. In France, Brittany is one of the regions most seriously affected. This increased incidence is usually linked to high rates of alcohol overconsumption and smoking, established risk factors for esophageal cancer, but the region has special occupational exposures. We aim to describe the occupational exposures of patients with esophageal cancer. Between June and October 2020, we conducted a monocentric descriptive study in a French Teaching Hospital and identified 37 eligible patients. We gathered data through a systemati

An interdisciplinary framework for derivation of occupational exposure limits.

Protecting the health and safety of workers in industrial operations is a top priority. One of the resources used in industry to ensure worker safety is the occupational exposure limit (OEL). OELs are derived from the assessment and interpretation of empirical data from animal and/or human studies. There are various guidelines for the derivation and implementation of OELs globally, with a range of stakeholders (including regulatory bodies, governmental agencies, expert groups and others). The purpose of this manuscript is to supplement existing guidance with learnings from a multidisciplinary

Monitoring Laboratory Occupational Exposures to Burkholderia pseudomallei.

BACKGROUND: Burkholderia pseudomallei is a Tier 1 overlap select agent and subject to the select agent regulations (42 CFR §73 and 9 CFR §121). It is a gram-negative, motile, soil saprophyte, and the etiologic agent of melioidosis. B. pseudomallei infection can produce systemic illness and can be fatal in the absence of appropriate treatment. Laboratory exposures involving this organism may occur when appropriate containment measures are not employed. Current disease treatment inadequacies and the risk factors associated with melioidosis make this an agent of primary concern in research, comme

[Occupational exposure to influenza virus of the wild birds].

Wild waterfowl are considered the main natural reservoir of influenza viruses and they have contributed to the reassortment of both pandemic viruses and viruses responsible for outbreaks of avian influenza in wild and domestic species. In order to determinate the factors involved, we reviewed the human cases of avian influenza related to the management of wild birds, the use of personal protective equipment, as well as the basis of surveillance programs of highly pathogenic avian influenza in wild birds in Spain. The direct transmission of influenza virus from wild birds to humans is a rare ev

Association of occupational exposure with features of systemic sclerosis.

BACKGROUND: Occupational exposure is reported as playing a substantial causative role in systemic sclerosis (SSc). OBJECTIVE: We sought to compare the characteristics of SSc in patients with and without occupational exposure to crystalline silica/solvents. METHODS: In all, 142 patients with SSc were enrolled in this prospective study. An expert committee performed blind evaluation of occupational exposure to crystalline silica/solvents. RESULTS: Patients exposed to crystalline silica more often exhibited: diffuse cutaneous SSc (P = .02), digital ulcers (P = .05), interstitial lung disease (

Occupational and environmental exposures and cancers in developing countries.

BACKGROUND: Over the past few decades, there has been a decline in cancers attributable to environmental and occupational carcinogens of asbestos, arsenic, and indoor and outdoor air pollution in high-income countries. For low- to middle-income countries (LMICs), however, these exposures are likely to increase as industrialization expands and populations grow. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to review the evidence on the cancer risks and burdens of selected environmental and occupational exposures in less-developed economies. FINDINGS: A causal association has been established between a

Parental occupational exposures and autism spectrum disorder.

Both self-report and industrial hygienist (IH) assessed parental occupational information were used in this pilot study in which 174 families (93 children with ASD and 81 unaffected children) enrolled in the Childhood Autism Risks from Genetics and Environment study participated. IH results indicated exposures to lacquer, varnish, and xylene occurred more often in the parents of children with ASD compared to the parents of unaffected children. Parents of children with ASD were more likely to report exposures to asphalt and solvents compared to parents of unaffected children. This study was lim

Occupational pesticide exposures and cancer risk: a review.

A review of the epidemiological literature linking pesticides to cancers in occupational studies worldwide was conducted, with particular focus on those articles published after the release of IARC Monograph 53 (1991): Occupational Exposures in Insecticide Applications and Some Pesticides. Important new data are now available. Chemicals in every major functional class of pesticides including insecticides, herbicide, fungicides, and fumigants have been observed to have significant associations with an array of cancer sites. Moreover, associations were observed with specific chemicals in many ch

[Occupational and environmental exposure to anilide and dicarboximide pesticides].

Dicarboximide fungicides (DF) such as vinclozolin, iprodione, procymidone are widely used on vines, fruit and vegetables, and anilide herbicides (AH) such as diuron, linuron, propanil are used to control weeds on hard surfaces, such as, roads, railway tracks, paths, and in crops, forestry. Italian reports on food safety found many samples contaminated by pesticides belonging to these categories, even though only few exceeding L.M.R. Since adverse effects on human health, such as endocrine disruption, have been reported, biological monitoring is essential for exposure assessment both of occupat

Cancer and occupational exposure to pentachlorophenol and tetrachlorophenol (Canada).

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study is to assess the carcinogenicity of pentachlorophenol and tetrachlorophenol using data from the BC sawmill workers cohort study. METHODS: The cohort consisted of 27,464 men employed by 14 sawmills for 1 year or more between 1950 and 1995. Fatal (1950-1995) and incident (1969-1995) cancers were identified using national registries. Plant records and systematic interviews with senior employees were used to estimate dermal exposure. Comparisons were made with the general BC population and dose-response relationships were assessed using Poisson regression.

Impact of occupational exposure on lead levels in women.

In 1994, 207 women participated in a study designed to examine the effects of occupational exposure and various lifestyle factors on bone and blood lead levels. In vivo measurements of Pb concentrations in tibia were performed by X-ray fluorescence. All 108 former smelter employees and 99 referents provided blood samples and answered a questionnaire on lifestyle characteristics and the relevant medical history. Lead concentrations in tibia and blood were significantly higher in the exposed group. The difference in mean bone Pb concentrations of the two groups is markedly greater than the diffe

[Occupational exposure to ionizing radiation and the occurrence of cataract].

Radiation cataract is one of ensuing effects of ionizing radiation, since its threshold dose under which it does not occur, and above which it shows dose dependency, has been observed. Clinical course of radiation cataract is identical for all the types of ionizing radiation and is very typical. Minimal dose for progressive cataract formation is determined by the type of radiation, i.e., its relative biological efficacy, dose, and the duration of the exposure period. Theoretically, threshold dose existence does not exclude the incidence of cataract formation under significantly smaller doses,

[Occupational exposure to endocrine disruptors: state of the art].

Research into how exposure to "endocrine disrupters chemicals" affects human health is attracting increasing attention among European and international scientists since these contaminants are so widespread in the home and work environment and can have far-reaching effects on mental and physical health. Here we draw a general picture of studies to date on specific occupational exposures to single chemicals such as bisphenol A, styrene, etc., or homogeneous groups such as pesticides, metals, dioxins, phthalates and others. Although the exposure occurs in different ways, the toxic mechanisms of a

[Environmental/occupational exposure and testicular tumors: is there a relationship?].

UNLABELLED: Although the incidence and mortality of testicular cancer are low (1), it is of interest because of its increasing incidence, its earlier onset and its geographical distribution. A part for cryptorchidism, the aetiology is unknown but previous studies have raised the hypothesis that exogenous hormones like endocrine disrupters may play a role in the development of testicular cancer. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to identify possible risk factors of testicular cancer in relation to environmental and occupational exposure, of the subject himself and of his mother. Occupational exposure to insecticides and their effects on the auditory system.

The objective of this investigation was to study the effects of occupational exposure to organophosphates and pyrethroid insecticides on the central auditory system. The study group consisted of 98 workers exposed to insecticides and 54 non-exposed workers. Data on work history, medical history, present diseases, occupational and non-occupational exposure to noise or chemicals and lifestyle factors were obtained through an interview. Central auditory system functions were assessed through frequency patterns and duration patterns testing. Fifty-six percent of the exposed workers had hearing dys

Occupational exposures and pancreatic cancer: a meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVES: Consolidation of epidemiological data on pancreatic cancer and worksite exposures. METHODS: Publications during 1969-98 were surveyed. Studies without verified exposures were excluded. Meta-analyses were conducted on data from 92 studies covering 161 populations, with results for 23 agents or groups of agents. With a standard format, five epidemiologists extracted risk estimates and variables of the structure and quality of each study. The extracted data were centrally checked. Random meta-models were applied. RESULTS: Based on 20 populations, exposure to chlorinated hydrocarbon
