D1 dopamine receptor is involved in shell formation in larvae of Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas.

Dopamine (DA), a significant member of catecholamines, is reported to induce biomineralization of calcium carbonate vaterite microspheres via dopamine receptor (DR) in bivalves, implying the modulation of dopaminergic system on shell formation during larval development. In this research, a homologue of D1 type DR (CgD1DR-1) was identified from oyster Crassostrea gigas, whose full length cDNA was 1197 bp. It was widely expressed in various tissues of C. gigas, with the significantly higher levels in hepatopancreas, mantle, muscle and gill. During developmental stages, the mRNA transcripts of Cg

Linked models to assess the impacts of climate change on nitrogen in a Norwegian river basin and FJORD system.

Dynamically downscaled data from two Atmosphere-Ocean General Circulation Models (AOGCMs), ECHAM4 from the Max-Planck Institute (MPI), Germany and HadAm3H from the Hadley Centre (HAD), UK, driven with two scenarios of greenhouse gas emissions (IS92a and A2, respectively) were used to make climate change projections. These projections were then used to drive four effect models linked to assess the effects on hydrology, and nitrogen (N) concentrations and fluxes, in the Bjerkreim river basin (685-km(2)) and its coastal fjord, southwestern Norway. The four effect models were the hydrological mode

Elevated pCO2 promotes growth but compromises PSII repair and antioxidant balance in the bloom-forming diatom Skeletonema costatum under ultraviolet radiation.

Diatoms serve as key marine primary producers, driving global biogeochemical cycles, but their physiological performance is increasingly challenged by ocean acidification (OA) and enhanced ultraviolet radiation (UVR). This study investigated how OA caused by elevated pCO2 (1000μatm) modulates the UVR sensitivity of the bloom-forming diatom Skeletonema costatum. Elevated pCO2 significantly enhanced the specific growth rate by ~11.6%; it did not significantly aggravate the UVR-induced decline in Fv/Fm, but it constrained PSII repair and PsbA turnover, as indicated by lower rate constants for PSI

Evaluating the combined effects of harmful algal blooms and low pH exposure on the development and hatching success of Artemia salina.

Harmful algal blooms (HABs) and ocean acidification are major stressors in coastal marine ecosystems, yet their combined effects on early zooplankton development remain poorly understood. This study tested whether HABs and low pH exposure exert synergistic effects on the embryonic development and hatching success of brine shrimp (Artemia salina) cysts. Cysts were exposed to controls, toxin-producing HAB species (i.e. Margalefidinium polykrikoides or Alexandrium catenella), or a non-toxin producing HAB control (i.e. Gymnodinium aureolum) and at either ambient (pH ∼ 8) or acidified (pH ∼ 7.2) co

Practical and accessible applications of CO2-captured absorbents through electrostatic ion exchange.

To address intensified global warming, it is urgently necessary to suppress CO2 emissions, particularly from fossil fuel industries. This does not imply reducing manufacturing activities, but rather preventing the release of CO2 generated during industrial processes into the atmosphere by utilizing the waste CO2 within a closed CO2 cycle. Numerous methods based on chemical conversion and biological fixation have been developed; however, these technologies have not yet provided effective solutions to the rising atmospheric CO2 concentration and ocean acidification because of limitations in scal

Hyperventilation and blood acid-base balance in hypercapnia exposed red drum (Sciaenops ocellatus).

Hyperventilation is a common response in fish exposed to elevated water CO2. It is believed to lessen the respiratory acidosis associated with hypercapnia by lowering arterial PCO2, but the contribution of hyperventilation to blood acid-base compensation has yet to be quantified. Hyperventilation may also increase the flux of irons across the gill epithelium and the cost of osmoregulation, owing to the osmo-respiratory compromise. Therefore, hypercapnia exposed fish may increase standard metabolic rate (SMR) leaving less energy for physiological functions such as foraging, migration, growth an

Transcriptomic insights into host transcriptional manipulation by ssDNA and ssRNA viruses in the marine planktonic diatom Chaetoceros tenuissimus.

The marine diatom Chaetoceros tenuissimus coexists in the coastal ocean with two distinct viruses: a circular single-stranded DNA virus and a single-stranded RNA virus. Both viruses are capable of killing the host in vitro experiments; however, the molecular mechanisms by which host genes respond and are utilized by these viruses for replication and proliferation remain unclear. In this study, RNA-seq analyses were conducted to investigate these mechanisms, and the host transcripts specific to each virus were validated by RT-qPCR. In the early phase of infection, RNA-seq analysis revealed that

Navigating the nexus: climate dynamics and microplastics pollution in coastal ecosystems.

Microplastics (MPs) pollution is an emerging environmental health concern, impacting soil, plants, animals, and humans through their entry into the food chain via bioaccumulation. Human activities such as improper solid waste dumping are significant sources that ultimately transport MPs into the water bodies of the coastal areas. Moreover, there is a complex interplay between the coastal climate dynamics, environmental factors, the burgeoning issue of MPs pollution and the complex web of coastal pollution. We embark on a comprehensive journey, synthesizing the latest research across multiple d

The development and plasticity of acid excretion mechanisms in early life stage red drum, Sciaenops ocellatus.

Ocean acidification (OA) has been shown to affect early life stage fishes in a variety of ways, including reduced survival and growth, and increased tissue damage. Yet, there is also substantial interspecies variability in the sensitivity of early life stage fishes to high CO2, and it has been theorized that this may relate to the ontogeny of systemic acid-base regulatory pathways; an area that has been surprisingly understudied in obligate marine species. Here, we used an integrative set of approaches to describe the development and plasticity of acid excretion pathways in developing red drum

Seasonal dynamics of the carbonate system and acidification sensitivity in a river-dominated coastal system: the Northern Yellow Sea, China.

This study investigated the carbonate dynamics in the northern coastal zone of the Northern Yellow Sea adjacent to the Yalu River estuary during two distinct hydrological periods in 2024. During the dry season, seawater dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) ranged narrowly from 1862 μmol kg-1 to 2141 μmol kg-1, while pH ranged from 7.70 to 8.02. In contrast, during the flood season, seawater DIC decreased to 1332-2111 μmol kg-1, with pH exhibiting greater variability from 7.63 to 8.48. End-member mixing modeling revealed that physical mixing was the dominant controlling factor during the dry season

Freshwater salinization syndrome on a continental scale.

Salt pollution and human-accelerated weathering are shifting the chemical composition of major ions in fresh water and increasing salinization and alkalinization across North America. We propose a concept, the freshwater salinization syndrome, which links salinization and alkalinization processes. This syndrome manifests as concurrent trends in specific conductance, pH, alkalinity, and base cations. Although individual trends can vary in strength, changes in salinization and alkalinization have affected 37% and 90%, respectively, of the drainage area of the contiguous United States over the pa

Solid State NMR for Mechanistic Exploration of CO2 Adsorption on Amine-Based Silica Adsorbents.

Mitigating atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations is crucial because elevated CO2 levels drive climate change by enhancing the greenhouse effect, leading to global warming, extreme weather events, ocean acidification, loss of biodiversity, and significant socioeconomic and health challenges for ecosystems and human populations. The necessity to reduce atmospheric carbon dioxide levels has led to the creation of novel materials designed to effectively capture and convert CO2 using carbon capture and utilization methods. A diverse array of materials such as metal-organic frameworks, covalent

Robustness of gametogenesis in the scleractinian coral, Tubastraea aurea, in the shallow-water hydrothermal vent field off Kueishan Island, northeastern Taiwan.

Understanding the reproductive resiliency of scleractinian corals is imperative as ocean acidification and rising sea surface temperatures threaten the foundation of coral reef ecosystems. However, the limited temporal scales of laboratory and transplantation-based methods fail to consider evolutionary time frames offered by natural analogues of future climate conditions, like hydrothermal vents (HV). Accordingly, we characterized the presence of scleractinians surrounding a major shallow-water HV near Kueishan Island in northeastern Taiwan, identified a candidate species, Tubastraea aurea, an

The impact of climate change and pollution on trematode-bivalve dynamics.

Coastal ecosystems and their marine populations are increasingly threatened by global environmental changes. Bivalves have emerged as crucial bioindicators within these ecosystems, offering valuable insights into biodiversity and overall ecosystem health. In particular, bivalves serve as hosts to trematode parasites, making them a focal point of study. Trematodes, with their life cycles intricately linked to external factors, provide excellent indicators of environmental changes and exhibit a unique ability to accumulate pollutants beyond ambient levels. Thus, they act as living sentinels, ref

Evaluation of remodeling and geometry on the biomechanical properties of nacreous bivalve shells.

Mollusks have developed a broad diversity of shelled structures to protect against challenges imposed by biological interactions(e.g., predation) and constraints (e.g., [Formula: see text]-induced ocean acidification and wave-forces). Although the study of shell biomechanical properties with nacreous microstructure has provided understanding about the role of shell integrity and functionality on mollusk performance and survival, there are no studies, to our knowledge, that delve into the variability of these properties during the mollusk ontogeny, between both shells of bivalves or across the

Elevated seawater levels of CO(2) change the metabolic fingerprint of tissues and hemolymph from the green shore crab Carcinus maenas.

Carbon dioxide (CO(2)) acts as a weak acid in water and the increasing level of CO(2) in the atmosphere leads to ocean acidification. In addition, possible leakage from sub-seabed storage of anthropogenic CO(2) may pose a threat to the marine environment. (1)H NMR spectroscopy was applied to extracts of hemolymph, gills and leg muscle from shore crabs (Carcinus maenas) to examine the metabolic response to elevated levels of CO(2). Crabs were exposed to different levels of CO(2)-acidified seawater with pH(NBS) 7.4, 6.6 and 6.3 (pCO(2)~2600, 16,000 and 30,000 μatm, respectively) for two weeks (l

Metal bioaccumulation and effects of olivine sand exposure on benthic marine invertebrates.

Due to the anthropogenic increase of atmospheric CO2 emissions, humanity is facing the negative effects of rapid global climate change. Both active emission reduction and carbon dioxide removal (CDR) technologies are needed to meet the Paris Agreement and limit global warming to 1.5 °C by 2050. One promising CDR approach is coastal enhanced weathering (CEW), which involves the placement of sand composed of (ultra)mafic minerals like olivine in coastal zones. Although the large-scale placement of olivine sand could beneficially impact the planet through the consumption of atmospheric CO2 and re

Anthropogenic multipollutant input to the offshore South China Sea.

The remote region of the South China Sea (SCS), situated far from urban mainland areas, is commonly perceived to experience minimal pollution. However, this may evolve into a considerably polluted region owing to increasing anthropogenic pollutants. In this study, we employ a multidisciplinary approach to analyze the surface sediments collected from the offshore area of the southern SCS. Our aim is to explore potential anthropogenic pollutants, their interactions, and the related controlling factors. This research endeavors to enhance our understanding of the current pollution status in the SC

Theory and classification of mass extinction causation.

Theory regarding the causation of mass extinctions is in need of systematization, which is the focus of this contribution. Every mass extinction has both an ultimate cause, i.e. the trigger that leads to various climato-environmental changes, and one or more proximate cause(s), i.e. the specific climato-environmental changes that result in elevated biotic mortality. With regard to ultimate causes, strong cases can be made that bolide (i.e. meteor) impacts, large igneous province (LIP) eruptions and bioevolutionary events have each triggered one or more of the Phanerozoic Big Five mass extincti
