Adolescent all-terrain vehicle deaths in West Virginia, 1990-1998.

West Virginia had the third highest number of ATV-related deaths and the highest death rate among all states from 1990-98. Adolescents were identified as a particularly high-risk ATV user group. Fatality data from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission indicated that one-quarter (25 of 101) of the state's ATV-related deaths occurred among children 16 and younger. Only one victim was wearing a helmet at the time of their fatal crash and nearly 70% of the victims were males. The average years of potential life lost was 64.2. WV's adolescent death rate of 0.67 per 100,000 was 5 times higher

Do automation and digitalization distract drivers? A systematic review.

Driving is a multifaceted activity involving a complex interplay of cognitive, perceptual, and motor skills, demanding continuous attention on the road. In recent years, the increased integration of automation and digitalization technologies in vehicles has improved drivers' convenience and safety. However, the spare attentional capacity available during automation and the prevalence of various infotainment systems in vehicles enable drivers to perform some secondary tasks not related to driving, which may divert their attention away from the road, increasing the chances of accidents. The obje

Motor vehicle and roadway factors in pedestrian and bicyclist injuries: an examination based on emergency department data.

Information on 2558 persons treated for injuries incurred while bicycling or walking was collected from eight hospital emergency departments over approximately a one-year time period. The emergency departments represented a mix of urban and suburban/rural sites in three states--California, New York, and North Carolina. The data were collected on special survey forms and included detailed information about the location of the injury event. Results show that, overall, 70% of the reported bicycle injury events and 64% of the reported pedestrian injury events did not involve a motor vehicle. In ad

Paediatric off-road vehicle injury in rural and regional Australia.

OBJECTIVE: Off-road riding of quad bikes and motorcycles is common among children across rural and remote Australia, but is a significant source of injury and hospitalisation. An in-depth analysis of paediatric off-road vehicle crashes was undertaken to inform injury prevention countermeasures by characterising injury patterns and sources of injury. DESIGN: This is a prospective in-depth case series. PARTICIPANTS: Participants are children aged 16 and under who have been hospitalised due to injury sustained from the use of an off-road motorcycle or quad bike in New South Wales, Australia. I

Age Legislation and Off-Road Vehicle Injuries in Children.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: In 2010, the Massachusetts Legislature passed a comprehensive law that restricted off-road vehicle (ORV) use by children <14 years old and regulated ORV use by children up to the age of 18 years. We aimed to examine the impact of the 2010 Massachusetts law on the rates of ORV-related injuries. METHODS: A retrospective analysis was performed of Massachusetts emergency department (ED) and inpatient discharges between 2002 and 2013 as found in the Center for Health Information and Analysis database by using external causes of injury codes specific to ORV-related injuri

Extremity fractures associated with ATVs and dirt bikes: a 10-year national epidemiologic study.

BACKGROUND: Morbidity and mortality of all-terrain vehicles and dirt bikes have been studied, as well as the association of helmet use and head injury. HYPOTHESIS/PURPOSE: The purpose of this study is to compare and contrast the patterns of extremity fractures associated with ATVs and dirt bikes. We believe there will be unique and potentially preventable injury patterns associated with dirt bikes and three-wheeled ATVs due to the poor stability of these vehicles. STUDY DESIGN: Descriptive epidemiology study. METHODS: The National Electronic Injury Surveillance System (NEISS) was used to ac

[Complaints of low back pain among private farmers exposed to whole body vibration].

BACKGROUND: Work-related lower back disorders, which involve the lumbo-sacral region, as well as injuries of the lumbar section of the spine, are a serious and constantly growing problem in Europe. Whole body vibration is one of the major hazardous factors suspected of the development of back pain. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study covered a selected group of males, 98 farmers (aged 55.3 +/- 10.1) from the area of 7 communes in the Lublin Region, engaged in the mixed agricultural production (plant-animal). The control group consisted of 40 academic workers (university and research institute emp

All-terrain vehicles (ATVs) on the road: a serious traffic safety and public health concern.

OBJECTIVES: On-road all-terrain vehicle (ATV) crashes are frequent occurrences that disproportionately impact rural communities. These crashes occur despite most states having laws restricting on-road ATV use. A number of overall risk factors for ATV-related injuries have been identified (e.g., lack of helmet, carrying passengers). However, few studies have determined the relative contribution of these and other factors to on-road crashes and injuries. The objective of our study was to determine whether there were differences between on- and off-road ATV crashes in their demographics and/or me

All-terrain vehicle-related deaths--West Virginia, 1985-1997.

From 1985 through 1997, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) identified 113 deaths associated with all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) in West Virginia. This report summarizes data from the CPSC ATV-related death database and on-site and/or follow-up telephone investigations; findings indicate that approximately two thirds of deaths were caused by injury to the head or neck. Consistent use of helmets by riders can substantially reduce ATV-related deaths.

The continuing problem of all-terrain vehicle injuries in children.

BACKGROUND: After the introduction of the all-terrain vehicle (ATV) in the United States in 1971, deaths and injuries in both adults and children rose dramatically. In 1988, the Consumer's Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and all manufacturers of ATVs signed legally binding "Consent Decrees," designed to decrease the number of ATV-related deaths and injuries, especially in children. METHODS: This report reviews retrospectively the mechanism of injury as well as the injuries in 51 children caused by ATV crashes during a 5-year period after the signing of the decrees. RESULTS: Data included ag

Illusory safeguards: legitimizing distortion in recall with guidelines for forensic hypnosis--two case reports.

Two amnesic automobile accident victims remembered the information needed for their ongoing lawsuits during hypnosis. Meeting the recording requirements of the Hurd safeguards led to the admission of hypnotically influenced testimony in court in one case, whereas failure to record led to exclusion in the other. In both cases, closed-head trauma almost certainly prevented long-term memory consolidation. Thus adherence to guidelines for forensic hypnosis legitimized distortions in recall instead of preventing them. Hypnosis used to facilitate hypermnesia alters expectations about what can be rem
