United Against Rabies Forum: The One Health Concept at Work.

Human deaths from rabies are preventable and can be eliminated by applying a systematic One Health approach. However, this ancient disease still threatens the lives of millions of people in up to 150 countries and kills an estimated 59, 000 people every year. Rabies today is largely a disease of poverty, almost always linked to dog bites, with most deaths occurring in neglected communities in Africa and Asia. The disease places an immense economic burden on its victims, a cost that far outweighs the investment needed to control it. A global framework for rabies elimination in humans is set out

One Health approach to cost-effective rabies control in India.

Over 20,000 rabies deaths occur annually in India, representing one-third of global human rabies. The Indian state of Tamil Nadu has pioneered a "One Health" committee to address the challenge of rabies in dogs and humans. Currently, rabies control in Tamil Nadu involves postexposure vaccination of humans after dog bites, whereas potential supplemental approaches include canine vaccination and sterilization. We developed a data-driven rabies transmission model fit to human rabies autopsy data and human rabies surveillance data from Tamil Nadu. Integrating local estimates for canine demography

Prioritizing zoonotic diseases in Ethiopia using a one health approach.

BACKGROUND: Ethiopia has the second largest human population in Africa and the largest livestock population on the continent. About 80% of Ethiopians are dependent on agriculture and have direct contact with livestock or other domestic animals. As a result, the country is vulnerable to the spread of zoonotic diseases. As the first step of the country's engagement in the Global Health Security Agenda, a zoonotic disease prioritization workshop was held to identify significant zoonotic diseases of mutual concern for animal and human health agencies. METHODS: A semi-quantitative tool developed b

People, pets, and parasites: one health surveillance in southeastern Saskatchewan.

Residents of remote and Indigenous communities might experience higher exposure to some zoonotic parasites than the general North American population. Human sero-surveillance conducted in two Saulteaux communities found 113 volunteers exposed as follows: Trichinella (2.7%), Toxocara canis (4.4%), Echinococcus (4.4%), and Toxoplasma gondii (1.8%). In dogs, 41% of 51 fecal samples were positive for at least one intestinal parasite, 3% of 77 were sero-positive for Borrelia burgdorferi, and 21% of 78 for T. gondii. Echinococcus exposure was more likely to occur in non-dog owners (odds ratio [OR]:

MediLabSecure: A One Health Network Facing the COVID-19 Pandemic.

The COVID-19 pandemic did not take us completely by surprise. The experts in public health worldwide heard the warnings and tried to alert and act. In many places, surveillance systems to monitor the emergence of new pathogens were set up. Many countries worldwide worked on prevention and preparedness for epidemic-prone infectious diseases. The rapidity of the identification of a novel human virus, and the quick sharing of its full sequence compared to past epidemics is proof of the continuous improvement of our systems worldwide. Immediately after the emergence of SARS-CoV-2, the first diffic

PFAS and One Health: integrating human, animal, and environmental perspectives.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS)-ubiquitous, persistent, and bioaccumulative-pose a cross-cutting threat to human, animal, and environmental health. Their resistance to degradation and global dissemination demand an integrated One Health framework to address their complex, interdependent risks across ecosystems, wildlife, and public health. This review synthesizes current knowledge on PFAS, highlighting their anthropogenic origins, environmental persistence, and global dispersion. Common exposure pathways, such as dietary intake, contaminated drinking water, and maternal transfer, le

Heavy Metals and One Health: Current Status and Future Prospects.

Water resources are being continuously contaminated by heavy metals. The levels of these metals are increasing exponentially due to various factors such as natural calamities, anthropogenic activities, rapid industrialization, overuse of pesticides, agricultural runoff, and overpopulation. Heavy metals are elements that have a high atomic weight and densities at least five times greater than that of water. Metals such as lead, cadmium, chromium, nickel, mercury, and arsenic are non-biodegradable and tend to accumulate in the bodies of humans and animals, posing health risks such as gastrointes

Synovial sepsis diagnostics and antimicrobial resistance: a one-health perspective.

This article, as part of the Currents in One Health series, reviews the current state of diagnostics for synovial sepsis. Synovial sepsis is a condition that affects veterinary and human medicine and requires coordinated efforts from both parties, as well as environmental considerations to accurately diagnose and preserve effective treatments. The article discusses best practices to identify the causative agent in septic synovitis, trends in bacterial identification and antimicrobial resistance patterns across common bacterial species, and a one-health perspective to optimize diagnostics acros

Challenges and Opportunities in One Health: Google Trends Search Data.

Google Trends data can be informative for zoonotic disease incidences, including Lyme disease. However, the use of Google Trends for predictive purposes is underutilized. In this study, we demonstrate the potential to use Google Trends for zoonotic disease prediction by predicting monthly state-level Lyme disease case counts in the United States. We requested Lyme disease data for the years 2010-2021. We downloaded Google Trends search data on terms for Lyme disease, symptoms of Lyme disease, and diseases with similar symptoms to Lyme disease. For each search term, we built an expanding window

Rabies control in South Asia requires a One Health approach.

Rabies is a vaccine-preventable viral disease present in more than 150 countries around the world. Globally, almost 60,000 people die each year from rabies, of which more than 58% are in Asia and around 45% in South Asia with especially high incidence in India, Pakistan and Bangladesh. Vaccination coverage of both people and stray dogs is low in the region and in general people are not given enough protection and information about pre- and post-exposure prophylaxis. Engagement of multiple sectors and One Health collaboration including community education, awareness programmes and vaccination c

Prioritizing zoonotic diseases utilizing the One Health approach: Jordan's experience.

BACKGROUND: Zoonotic diseases constitute a threat to humans and animals. The Middle East Region is a hotspot for such a threat; given its geographic location under migratory birds' flight paths, mass gatherings, political conflicts, and refugee crises. Thus, prioritizing zoonotic diseases of national significance is critical for preventing and controlling such threats and optimizing limited resources. Using a multi-sectoral One Health (OH) approach, this study aimed at prioritizing zoonotic diseases of national significance to Jordan and identifying future recommendations and action plans. ME

One-health approach: A best possible way to control rabies.

More than 75% of emerging infectious diseases and 60% of known human infectious diseases are transmitted from animals. Among these zoonoses, rabies is of utmost public health significance due to its lethality. The multi-faceted nature of zoonotic disease complicates control and prevention and thus, a multi-sectoral One Health Approach could be a better strategy to cope with rabies. Up until now, rabies prevention and control programs are conducted utilizing mass vaccination of domestic and community dogs and cats, and mass awareness programs. However, the burden of rabies has not been reduced

Performance of Veterinary Services Pathway evolution and One Health aspects.

Animals, and the health systems which ensure their protection, play a vital role in the security and economic and social well-being of humanity, and are therefore a key component of the One Health concept. For global and national health security, prevention is better than cure, and targeting 'risk at source' in animal populations is a vital strategy in safeguarding the planet from risks of emerging zoonoses and antimicrobial resistance (AMR). Neglected zoonoses - such as rabies and brucellosis - continue to have a significant global impact on human health and are also best managed at their ani

Fever, bacterial zoonoses, and One Health in sub-Saharan Africa.

Although often underappreciated, a number of bacterial zoonoses are endemic in Africa. Of these, brucellosis, leptospirosis, Q fever, and rickettsioses are responsible for a substantial proportion of febrile illness among patients seeking hospital care. In this paper, we discuss the aetiology, epidemiology, clinical presentation, diagnosis, treatment and prevention of these bacterial zoonoses. To prevent and control bacterial zoonoses, strategies targeting both animals and humans are crucial. These may lead to better outcomes than strategies based exclusively on treatment of human infections.

One Health-ness Evaluation of Cysticercosis Surveillance Design in Portugal.

The increasing occurrence of human cysticercosis, a zoonotic neglected disease, is challenging the traditional prevention and control paradigm and calling for One Health (OH) solutions in industrialized countries. OH solutions for health interventions are increasingly being used to capture expected and unexpected outcomes across people, animals, and the environment. The Network for Evaluation of One Health (NEOH) proposes an evidence-based framework, relying on systems and mixed methods approaches to evaluate the One Health-ness. In this case study, this tool is used to evaluate the design of
