Physician reimbursement for strabismus surgery across provinces and territories in Canada.

OBJECTIVE: Inadequate financial reimbursements in pediatric ophthalmology and strabismus (POS) are held responsible for the declining interest of ophthalmology graduates, leading to serious workforce concerns. The purpose of this study is to review physician reimbursements for strabismus surgery across provinces and territories in Canada. METHODS: The manuals for physician remuneration for provinces/territories in Canada were reviewed in 2023 and 2024; strabismus surgery and routine cataract surgery billing codes with their respective compensation were extracted. The data were analyzed using

[Current situation of surgery for traumatic optic neuropathy].

Although corticosteroid therapy remains the mainstream of various treatment procedures in traumatic optic neuropathy, some patients are still unable to benefit by this procedure. Therefore, optic nerve decompression has become an important choice for treating traumatic optic neuropathy. However, several problems have been raised on optic nerve decompression, such as who is suitable for this operation; as well as when to do and how to do this operation. The answers to these questions are controversial. We systematically review the current clinical evidence, and suggest that surgical decompressi

[Bioethical issues on the access to drugs in the practice of ophthalmology in Colombia].

Ophthalmology is a high-cost specialty in terms of medical, surgical and technological innovation and treatment. It is worrisome that in some countries patients are affected in their visual health, and therefore in their quality of life because they do not have the necessary resources for timely access to medications, medical appointments or surgical procedures. We searched in four electronic databases (ScienceDirect, MEDLINE/PubMed, ClinicalKey and SciELO), as well as in books on bioethics and Colombian laws, for articles related to bioethical issues and access to medicines in the exercise of

Congenital nasolacrimal duct obstruction.

Congenital nasolacrimal duct obstruction is a common disorder in infants, with up to 20% of all newborns suffering from epiphora during the first year of life. This paper reviews the current evidence regarding the incidence, natural history, and management of congenital nasolacrimal duct obstruction. It highlights the role of nasendoscopy in improving the understanding of the condition, which has resulted in better overall management.

INVESTIGATION OF HAND TREMOR SUPPRESSION BY A CUSTOMIZED PASSIVE SURGICAL SUPPORT ROBOT DURING INTERNAL LIMITING MEMBRANE PEELING.

PURPOSE: To construct a quantitative evaluation system for hand tremor during internal limiting membrane (ILM) peeling and investigate changes in hand tremor attributable to the use of the customized passive surgical support robot. METHODS: This analytical and experimental study developed a hand tremor evaluation system that synchronizes three elements: surgical microscope images, an artificial eye module with a force sensor to simulate ILM peeling, and microforceps with an inertial measurement unit. Two surgeons used this system to measure hand tremor during ILM peeling with and without the

Glaucoma surgical procedures under development.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Rapid innovation in glaucoma surgery is expanding surgical options in the angle, subconjunctival space, and supraciliary space. RECENT FINDINGS: Advancements in glaucoma surgery make it possible for surgeons to provide treatments with less risk. In particular, new devices and lasers are available for minimally invasive glaucoma surgeries. There are also new implants and techniques for bleb-forming glaucoma surgery. SUMMARY: As glaucoma surgeons have access to an increasing number of procedures, devices, and treatments, it is important for evidence to drive decision-making.

Half Minimally Invasive Strabismus Surgery (MISS): A single para-muscular approach to horizontal muscle strabismus surgery.

PURPOSE: Minimally invasive surgeries are gaining popularity. We compared two different approaches to rectus muscles: namely the standard para limbal (SPL) and the single para-muscular (SPM). METHODS: Thirty-six patients planned for monocular horizontal strabismus surgery were block randomized to SPL and SPM approach. SPM approach involved a single para-muscular 10-mm conjunctival incision levelled at the inferior border of rectus muscle. We compared the post-operative grades of redness, congestion, chemosis, foreign body sensation, and drop intolerance at day 1, 2 weeks, and 6-8 weeks; scar

Traumatic eyelid defects: a review of reconstructive options.

PURPOSE: Reconstruction of eyelid defects sustained from trauma can cause significant morbidity if not properly treated. Various local flaps are available to aid in this reconstruction. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Two hundred twelve patients sustained facial lacreations. Of these, 33 patients sustained injury to the eyelids. Six patients had significantly missing tissue, which required treatment with flaps. RESULTS: All patients had reconstruction of their eyelid defects. Three of the 6 patients (50%) with avulsive-type defects required a staged approach. CONCLUSIONS: For large avulsive eyelid de

Intraocular lens power calculation after corneal refractive surgery.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Keratorefractive procedures designed to decrease refractive errors have gained enormous popularity among ophthalmologists and patients. As the post-refractive surgery patient population ages, visually significant cataracts will develop. With advances in techniques for cataract extraction and intraocular lens implantation, cataract surgery has evolved into a refractive surgical procedure as well as an operation to improve best corrected visual acuity. This raises expectations in terms of desired postoperative refractive status and uncorrected visual acuity. Although performin

General anaesthetic considerations for haemostasis in orbital surgery.

Orbital surgery is often conducted in areas with limited exposure where vital structures are tightly crowded together. A bloodless field is paramount in orbital surgery for the proper identification of normal and pathologic tissue and even minimal bleeding can obscure the surgical field, making surgery more difficult and increasing the risk of complications. Surgery for highly vascular orbital lesions is an additional situation where maintaining an adequate surgical field is often challenging but paramount. The role of the anaesthetist in controlling surgical blood loss has been increasingly r
