Psychophysics of neon color spreading: Chromatic and temporal factors are not limiting.

Neon color spreading (NCS) is an illusory color phenomenon that provides a dramatic example of surface completion and filling-in. Numerous studies have varied both spatial and temporal aspects of the neon-generating stimulus to explore variations in the strength of the effect. Here, we take a novel, parametric, low-level psychophysical approach to studying NCS in two experiments. In Experiment 1, we test the ability of both cone-isolating and equiluminant stimuli to generate neon color spreading for both increments and decrements in cone modulations. As expected, sensitivity was low to S(hort-

Canonical Cortical Circuit Model Explains Rivalry, Intermittent Rivalry, and Rivalry Memory.

It has been shown that the same canonical cortical circuit model with mutual inhibition and a fatigue process can explain perceptual rivalry and other neurophysiological responses to a range of static stimuli. However, it has been proposed that this model cannot explain responses to dynamic inputs such as found in intermittent rivalry and rivalry memory, where maintenance of a percept when the stimulus is absent is required. This challenges the universality of the basic canonical cortical circuit. Here, we show that by including an overlooked realistic small nonspecific background neural activ

Depth propagation and surface construction in 3-D vision.

In stereo vision, regions with ambiguous or unspecified disparity can acquire perceived depth from unambiguous regions. This has been called stereo capture, depth interpolation or surface completion. We studied some striking induced depth effects suggesting that depth interpolation and surface completion are distinct stages of visual processing. An inducing texture (2-D Gaussian noise) had sinusoidal modulation of disparity, creating a smooth horizontal corrugation. The central region of this surface was replaced by various test patterns whose perceived corrugation was measured. When the test

Neuronal motion after-response induced in the tectal neurons of toads by moving textured background.

When an object is held stationary in the center of the receptive field of a tectal neuron in a toad and a textured background is moved for a period of time, some neurons produce a burst of discharges immediately after the movement of the background ceases. This effect was first found in a recent study and temporarily called 'neuronal motion after-response'. A total of 66 tectal neurons in toads were examined, and 29 out of them showed the effect. In the different neurons under investigation, the firing rate varied from a few spikes to discharges of very long duration. The appearance of the mot

[Results of a study of vestibular function and space perception in cosmonauts].

The results of studying the vestibular function and the function of spatial perception in 26 cosmonauts before and after 30 space flights are discussed. The typical postflight changes in these functions were: an increase in the reactivity of the otolith organ, a decrease in the sensitivity of semicircular canals, a decline in the accuracy of perception of spatial coordinates, asymmetry of most parameters, development of illusionary reactions inflight. The cosmonauts also showed individual variations with respect to the degrees of the above responses, the dynamics and length of adaptation, the

Upper bill bending as an adaptation for nectar feeding in hummingbirds.

Observations of maxillary (upper bill) bending in hummingbirds have been considered an optical illusion, yet a recent description of out-of-phase opening and closing between their bill base and tip suggests a genuine capacity for bill bending. We investigate bill kinematics during nectar feeding in six species of hummingbirds. We employed geometric morphometrics to identify bending zones and combined these data with measurements of bill flexural rigidity from micro-computed tomography scans to better understand the flexing mechanism. We found that the mandible remains in place throughout the l

Electrophysiological correlates of visual binding errors after bilateral parietal damage.

Illusory conjunctions (e.g. the confusion between the shape of one stimulus with the color of another stimulus) are the most dramatic expression of binding failures in vision. Under brief exposure or when attention is diverted illusory conjunctions may be observed in healthy participants, but they only represent a real-life problem for patients with parietal damage. However, it is unclear whether such failures reflect the impairment of early or late stages of visual processing. Here, we examined the time-course of visual processing using evoked potential measures in a patient with bilateral da

A visual-haptic Necker cube reveals temporal constraints on intersensory merging during perceptual exploration.

When viewing a three-dimensional Necker cube with one eye, participants can experience illusory reversals even while they feel the cube with their hands. This surprising property of the visual-haptic Necker cube affords a unique opportunity to investigate temporal constraints on interactions between vision and touch during extended observation of a three-dimensional object. Our observers reported reversals while they viewed the cube and, at the same time, they either held it with two-finger grips, felt it with while their hands remained stationary, or actively explored it by moving one hand. The representation of illusory and real contours in human cortical visual areas revealed by functional magnetic resonance imaging.

Illusory contours (perceived edges that exist in the absence of local stimulus borders) demonstrate that perception is an active process, creating features not present in the light patterns striking the retina. Illusory contours are thought to be processed using mechanisms that partially overlap with those of "real" contours, but questions about the neural substrate of these percepts remain. Here, we employed functional magnetic resonance imaging to obtain physiological signals from human visual cortex while subjects viewed different types of contours, both real and illusory. We sampled these

Toward a cognitive neuropsychology of awareness: implicit knowledge and anosognosia.

Although a systematic cognitive neuropsychology of awareness has not yet emerged, a number of phenomena reported in the literature provide an empirical basis for developing it. The present discussion focusses on two such phenomena: implicit knowledge, which refers to knowledge that is expressed in task performance unintentionally and with little phenomenal awareness; and anosognosia, which refers to unawareness of neuropsychological deficits. Two types of theoretical accounts of these phenomena are discussed. A first order theoretical account entails postulating damage to, or disconnection of,

Environmental factors in helicopter operations.

The environmental problems affecting aircrew are partly those which all soldiers face, such as noise, heat and cold, and partly peculiar to the medium and the vehicle in which aircrew train and fight, such as disorientation and decompression. The cockpit environment of the modern helicopter is luxurious in comparison with many of its predecessors, yet most of the adverse effects of flight on the man still pertain. The result can, predictably, be acute and disastrous, resulting in an accident produced by severe disorientation, or chronic, producing insidious fatigue and performance decrement, w

Visual agnosia in an artist.

This report describes a 73 year old left-handed male artist who presented with agnosic symptoms following an occipital cerebral vascular accident. Against a background of a memory disturbance, but otherwise essentially intact linguistic and cognitive capacities, the patient was generally unable to identify single objects on visual presentation, and displayed marked difficulty in interpreting complex objects, depicted scenes, and partially occluded figures. The patient's preserved ability to recognize geometric forms, to perceive optical illusions, and to copy designs, and objects with consider

Comprehensive Review on the Neuro-ophthalmic Manifestations of Autoimmune Encephalitis Syndromes.

Autoimmune encephalitides (AE) comprise a heterogeneous group of immune-mediated disorders characterized by inflammation of the central nervous system, frequently associated with antibodies targeting neuronal cell surface or intraneuronal proteins. Clinically, they manifest a wide range of neurological, psychiatric, and visual symptoms, many of which may be relatively specific to the underlying antibody subtype. The visual system is commonly affected, with disturbances involving either the afferent or efferent pathways. Efferent manifestations typically arise from brainstem or cerebellar invol

Effects of stereopsis on vection, presence and cybersickness in head-mounted display (HMD) virtual reality.

Stereopsis provides critical information for the spatial visual perception of object form and motion. We used virtual reality as a tool to understand the role of global stereopsis in the visual perception of self-motion and spatial presence using virtual environments experienced through head-mounted displays (HMDs). Participants viewed radially expanding optic flow simulating different speeds of self-motion in depth, which generated the illusion of self-motion in depth (i.e., linear vection). Displays were viewed with the head either stationary (passive radial flow) or laterally swaying to the

Central vertigo and dizziness: epidemiology, differential diagnosis, and common causes.

BACKGROUND: Dizziness is a common complaint among patients seen by primary care physicians, neurologists, and otolaryngologists. The most common causes of dizziness are peripheral vestibular disorders, but central nervous system disorders must be excluded. This article provides an overview of the epidemiology of dizziness, differentiating between central and peripheral vertigo, and central causes of dizziness. REVIEW SUMMARY: Dizziness is among the most common complaints in medicine, affecting approximately 20% to 30% of persons in the general population. Dizziness is a general term for a sen

Visuoperceptual impairment in multiple sclerosis patients diagnosed with neuropsychological tasks.

A comprehensive set of 31 binocular neuropsychological tasks assessing a series of spatial and non-spatial visuoperceptual abilities was used to study visuoperceptual impairment in a representative group of 49 MS-clinic patients exhibiting neither diagnosed ophthalmological afflictions nor major psychiatric diagnoses. Among these patients, true frequency rate of visuoperceptual impairment, i.e. of subjects failing four or more tasks, was estimated at 26%. The pattern of visuoperceptual impairment was non-uniform, non-selective, restricted and idiosyncratic. Only four tasks yielded significant

3-D Optics for Thoracoscopic Vertebral Body Replacement - Essential Technical Progress or Just Nice to Have?

BACKGROUND: Three-dimensional (3-D) endoscopic optics use 2 cameras to simulate the different perspectives of the right and left eye, creating the illusion of spatial depth. Optimised orientation as well as improved hand-eye coordination compared to 2-D-optics could be proven in standardised test setups (black box) and in laparoscopic use. This retrospective study examines whether these results can also be applied to thoracoscopic vertebral body replacement at the thoracolumbar junction. HYPOTHESES: 1. Ventral vertebral body replacement using 3-D-thoracoscopy results in a shorter operation ti

Neural correlates of binocular depth inversion illusion in antipsychotic-naïve first-episode schizophrenia patients.

OBJECTIVES: Binocular depth inversion illusion (BDII), a visual, 'top-down'-driven information process, is impaired in schizophrenia and particularly in its early stages. BDII is a sensitive measure of impaired visual information processing and represents a valid diagnostic tool for schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders. However, neurobiological underpinnings of aberrant BDII in first-episode schizophrenia are largely unknown at present. METHODS: In this study, 22 right-handed, first-episode, antipsychotic-naïve schizophrenia patients underwent BDII assessment and MRI scanning at 1.5 T.

Plaid perception is only subtly impaired in strabismic amblyopia.

Amblyopes exhibit a global motion anomaly that implicates processing beyond the local motion analysis of V1 possibly involving areas MT and MST in the extra-striate cortex. Here, we sought to further investigate this deficit by measuring the perception of moving plaid stimuli by amblyopic observers, since there is good physiological evidence that the motion of such stimuli is determined by processes beyond V1. The conditions under which the two moving components constituting the plaids were seen to cohere or move transparently over one another were investigated by manipulating their relative s

The hodology of hallucinations.

The hodotopic framework is a recent revision of Geschwind's disconnection paradigm incorporating advances in functional and white matter imaging. Its intention is to help clinico-pathological correlations across a range of neurological and psychiatric conditions and generate novel research questions. Here I consider hallucinations within this framework. The paper is divided into three parts. The first reviews the auditory and visual hallucination literature from the dual perspectives of dysfunction localised to specific brain regions (topological) and dysfunction related to connections between
