Subjective and objective measurements of the amplitude of accommodation: Revisiting the existing methods and clinical evaluation of newer techniques.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the repeatability and agreement of established and newer methods for measuring the amplitude of accommodation in non-presbyopic and early presbyopic individuals. METHODS: The amplitude of accommodation of 81 participants was measured using five different methods (two push-up techniques, two minus lens techniques and one objective technique) with different measurement principles. Among these, two new techniques were introduced: an electronic push-up and a minus lens technique with a tunable lens. Three repeated measurements were performed with each method. The repeatabilit

Targeted perimetry for mapping the shape of glaucomatous arcuate scotomata.

PURPOSE: Recent work has shown potential benefits for perimetry with dense spacing. To investigate the impact of normal inhomogeneity of perimetric sensitivity on perimetry with dense spacing, suprathreshold perimetry was used near the optic disc where shadows of blood vessels affect sensitivity in healthy eyes. METHODS: Three groups of participants were tested: 58 healthy older controls, 29 healthy younger controls and 18 patients with glaucoma. A Compass perimeter was operated with the Open Perimetry Interface, using custom software with three components: the first found the centre of the b

Defocus Incorporated Multiple Segments (DIMS) spectacle lenses in UK children: Outcomes from a 2-year multi-site interventional trial.

INTRODUCTION: Myopia is a growing public health concern with long-term risks for visual impairment. While Defocus Incorporated Multiple Segments (DIMS) spectacle lenses have proven efficacy in Chinese children, evidence from Western populations remains limited. This multi-site interventional study evaluates the effectiveness of DIMS lenses in slowing myopia progression and their visual acceptability and tolerability among UK children. METHODS: Children aged 5-15 years with cycloplegic spherical equivalent refraction (SER) of -0.50 to -8.50 D, anisometropia ≤1.50 D and astigmatism ≤2.50 D were

Hard braking events in bioptic drivers with central vision impairment.

PURPOSE: Some individuals with central vision impairment can obtain or maintain driving privileges using bioptic telescopes. Previous work has often demonstrated an increased collision risk for bioptic drivers, but some on-road studies find similar safety to that of normally sighted drivers. The purpose of this study was to compare exposure-controlled hard braking and speeding events measured with naturalistic recording in visually impaired bioptic drivers and normally sighted control drivers. METHODS: Visual acuity was measured for each eye individually and through the bioptic when indicated

Change in refractive errors with changes in IOL parameters.

This study considered two questions associated with intraocular lens (IOL) power and refraction: (1) Given a refraction with a particular IOL in the eye, what will be the refraction for the IOL or another IOL if located differently with regard to tilt or anterior-posterior position? (2) For a target refraction, what is the power of another IOL if located differently with regard to tilt or position? A thin lens technique was developed to address these questions. For the first question, light was traced through the initial correcting spectacle lens to the cornea, refracted at the cornea, transfe

The influence of variations in ocular biometric and optical parameters on differences in refractive error.

PURPOSE: To present a paraxial method to estimate the influence of variations in ocular biometry on changes in refractive error (S) at a population level and apply this method to literature data. METHODS: Error propagation was applied to two methods of eye modelling, referred to as the simple method and the matrix method. The simple method defines S as the difference between the axial power and the whole-eye power, while the matrix method uses more accurate ray transfer matrices. These methods were applied to literature data, containing the mean ocular biometry data from the SyntEyes model, a

Generalised models of the vertebrate eye.

PURPOSE: To present a set of closed-form analytical equations to create a consistent eye model balance based on clinically measured input parameters in a single step. These models complement the existing iterative approaches in the literature. METHODS: Two different approaches are presented, both considering the cornea and lens as equivalent thin lenses. The first, called the Gaussian model, starts by defining the refractive error as the difference between the axial power (or dioptric distance) and the whole eye power, which can be expanded by filling in the formulas for each power. The resul

Red light instruments for myopia exceed safety limits.

PURPOSE: Low-level red light (LLRL) therapy has recently emerged as a myopia treatment in children, with several studies reporting significant reduction in axial elongation and myopia progression. The goal of this study was to characterise the output and determine the thermal and photochemical maximum permissible exposure (MPE) of LLRL devices for myopia control. METHODS: Two LLRL devices, a Sky-n1201a and a Future Vision, were examined. Optical power measurements were made using an integrating sphere radiometer through a 7-mm diameter aperture, in accordance with ANSI Z136.1-2014, sections 3

Impact of pupil and defocus ring intersection area on retinal defocus.

PURPOSE: With the rising prevalence of myopia, especially among the young, orthokeratology (Ortho-K) stands out as a promising approach, not only to reduce myopia but also to control the progression of axial length (AL). This study examined how the intersection area between the pupil and defocus ring influenced retinal defocus and axial growth after Ortho-K. METHODS: A case-control study was conducted with 100 participants (100 eyes). Both AL and the refraction difference value (RDV), that is, the peripheral refractive error measured with respect to the central value after wearing Ortho-K len
