A comparision of short and long reading passages in symptomatic vs. asymptomatic subjects.

BACKGROUND: The visual system is necessary for reading. Understanding the mechanics of eye movements during reading can give insight into the reading process. The ReadAlyzer is an electronic recording system that measures eye movements while reading. Long passages on the ReadAlyzer of 800 words have recently been introduced as a tool to assess the efficiency of reading eye movements. Previously, short passages of 100 words have been used exclusively. This project was designed to determine if passage length influences the quality of reading eye movements; METHODS: Optometry students (N = 40) a

Accessing emergency eye care by therapeutically qualified optometrists: a simulated-patient study in Quebec, Canada.

CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Therapeutically qualified optometrists are important providers of emergency eye care. To provide insight on how to optimise accessibility of a population to emergency care, it is helpful to examine factors which go beyond the scope of practice and number of practitioners in a jurisdiction. BACKGROUND: Therapeutically qualified optometrists play an important role in managing ocular emergencies. This study assesses the accessibility of emergency eye care for a new patient in Quebec and explores associated factors such as geographical region of practices and morbidity of pati

When care meets commerce: Patient resistance in optometric consultations.

We use conversation analysis to investigate clients' responses to treatment recommendations in optometric eye examinations (n = 66). As in other healthcare settings, in optometry, clients exercise their right to reject professionals' recommendations. In our analysis, it transpires that the reason for visit influences the emergence of rejections to recommendations: those who attend optometric examinations because they have noticed changes to their eyes/vision align with recommendations given by optometrists; those, however, who attend eye examinations on routine grounds resist recommendations.

[The safety of atropine for myopia prevention and control].

Atropine is a classical drug with a wide use in clinical practice. In ophthalmology, atropine can be used for cycloplegia before optometry, and the treatment of amblyopia, iridocyclitis, malignant glaucoma, etc. In recent years, the "old drugs with new application " research and application of atropine for myopia prevention and control has become a hotspot and the efficacy of atropine has been preliminarily recognized. However, before the widely used in clinical, the safety of atropine draws attention. Researches concerning side effects of atropine were searched. The most common problem is pho

Effect of heterophoria measurement technique on the clinical accommodative convergence to accommodation ratio.

BACKGROUND: Measurement of the stimulus accommodative convergence to accommodation (AC/A) ratio is a standard procedure in clinical optometric practice. Typically, heterophoria is assessed at several accommodative stimulus levels, and the gradient of the vergence to accommodation function computed. A number of procedures are available for the subjective measurement of heterophoria, but it is unclear whether the use of different vergence measurement techniques will alter the obtained AC/A value. Accordingly, the current study compared AC/A ratios measured using 3 clinical subjective heterophori
