Radiotherapy for lung metastases.

Pulmonary metastases are a common site of spread for many cancers, regardless of the primary tumour. While systemic treatments remain the standard of care, local therapies, particularly stereotactic body radiotherapy, have shown promising results in terms of local control and survival in selected patients with oligometastatic disease. This document presents the updated recommendations from the Société française de radiothérapie oncologique (SFRO, French society for radiation oncology) regarding the indications and technical aspects of radiotherapy for intrapulmonary metastases. The focus is on

Dosimetric robustness of urethra sparing in ultrahypofractionated prostate SBRT using catheter-based motion tracking.

PURPOSE: In ultrahypofractionated prostate stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT), genitourinary toxicity is the primary concern. Urethra sparing is a strategy to mitigate potential negative effects of higher single doses to the urethra and bladder neck. We report on the dosimetric robustness of urethra sparing using a catheter-based real-time monitoring device to track both interfractional variability and intrafractional motion. METHODS: In 12 patients undergoing prostate ultrahypofractionated radiotherapy (UHFX), intrafractional prostate motion was monitored using a HypoCath catheter (M

Engineering analysis on periodic pedal motion of clams during foot penetration.

Clams are bivalve species that burrow into substrate using a characteristic organ termed 'foot'. Their burrowing process involves a repetitive sequence of movements termed the digging cycle. This study focuses on the initial phase of the digging cycle: foot penetration into substrate, as a step toward clarifying the burrowing mechanism from robotics and soil mechanics perspectives. We proposed that the periodic pedal motion plays a key role in facilitating foot penetration through reduction of substrate resistance. To identify the essential characteristics, this motion was decomposed into thre

A robust treatment planning approach for chest motion in postmastectomy chest wall intensity modulated radiation therapy.

PURPOSE: Chest wall postmastectomy radiation therapy (PMRT) should consider the effects of chest wall respiratory motion. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of robustness planning intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) for respiratory movement, considering respiratory motion as a setup error. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This study analyzed 20 patients who underwent PMRT (10 left and 10 right chest walls). The following three treatment plans were created for each case and compared. The treatment plans are a planning target volume (PTV) plan (PP) that covers the PTV with

Simulation of respiratory motion during IMRT dose delivery.

BACKGROUND: When intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) is realised with dynamic multi-leaf collimators (MLC) and given under respiratory motion, dosimetric errors may occur. These errors are a consequence of the dose blurring and the interplay between the organ motion and the leaf motion. In the present study, a model for evaluating these dosimetric effects for patient-specific cases has been developed and tested. MATERIAL AND METHODS: In the purpose written software, three dimensional (3D) dose distributions can be calculated both with and without a generated breathing cycle. To valid

Motion sickness in passenger vehicles during test track operations.

As automation transforms drivers into passengers, the deployment of automated vehicles (AVs) has the potential to greatly increase the incidence of motion sickness. A study was conducted to quantify motion sickness response of front-seat passengers performing ecologically relevant passenger activities during conditions consistent with driving on public roadways. Fifty-two adults with a large range of self-reported levels of motion sickness susceptibility and age participated in data collection on a closed test track in a passenger sedan. Motion sickness ratings increased with task vs. no-task

Dosimetric Impact of Delineation and Motion Uncertainties on the Heart and Substructures in Lung Cancer Radiotherapy.

AIMS: Delineation variations and organ motion produce difficult-to-quantify uncertainties in planned radiation doses to targets and organs at risk. Similar to manual contouring, most automatic segmentation tools generate single delineations per structure; however, this does not indicate the range of clinically acceptable delineations. This study develops a method to generate a range of automatic cardiac structure segmentations, incorporating motion and delineation uncertainty, and evaluates the dosimetric impact in lung cancer. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Eighteen cardiac structures were delineate

Case of 24-week Fetus Delivered from Mother on Life Support with Brain-death from Suicide Attempt: Ethical Issues Associated with Severe Complications.

Advances in critical care medicine have made it possible to sustain vital organ systems in brain-dead patients. One clinical scenario besides donor organ retrieval in which a benefit may be gained from continuing life support is pregnancy. A pregnant woman in her late 30's at 23 weeks gestation exhibiting worsening depression was referred to the Department of Psychiatry. One day after admission she attempted suicide by hanging and suffered a cardiopulmonary arrest. A fetal heart beat and fetal motion was confirmed immediately after resuscitation. Three days after admission, an emergency Cesare

Aperture maneuver with compelled breath (AMC) for moving tumors: a feasibility study with a moving phantom.

Respiration causes target motion, which is known to be one of the technical bottlenecks in radiotherapy, especially for stereotactic radio-surgery and intensity modulated radiotherapy (IMRT). To overcome this problem, aperture maneuver with compelled breath (AMC) has been developed. In order to simulate compelled respiratory motion, a moving phantom using a ventilator was designed. As the air flow was forced to the bellows, which simulates the lungs, by a ventilator, a film connected to the ventilator moved like the respiratory target motion. A software was developed to transfer multileaf coll

Organ-specific transcriptome analysis reveals differential gene expression in different castes under natural conditions in Apis cerana.

Honeybees are one of the most environmentally important insects, as their pollination of various plant species contributes to the balance among different ecosystems. It has been studied extensively for their unique attribute of forming a caste society. Unlike other insects, honeybees communicate socially by secreting pheromones or by exhibiting specific patterns of motion. In the honeybee industry, the Asian honeybees (Apis cerana) and the Western honeybees (Apis mellifera) are dominant species. However, molecular research on the transcriptomes of A. cerana has not been studied as extensively

Time-resolved MRI for off-line treatment robustness evaluation in carbon-ion radiotherapy of pancreatic cancer.

PURPOSE: In this study, we investigate the use of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for the clinical evaluation of gating treatment robustness in carbon-ion radiotherapy (CIRT) of pancreatic cancer. Indeed, MRI allows radiation-free repeated scans and fast dynamic sequences for time-resolved (TR) imaging (cine-MRI), providing information on inter- and intra-fraction cycle-to-cycle variations of respiratory motion. MRI can therefore support treatment planning and verification, overcoming the limitations of the current clinical standard, that is, four-dimensional computed tomography (4DCT), which

Osteoarthritis: toward a comprehensive understanding of pathological mechanism.

Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common degenerative joint disease and a major cause of pain and disability in adult individuals. The etiology of OA includes joint injury, obesity, aging, and heredity. However, the detailed molecular mechanisms of OA initiation and progression remain poorly understood and, currently, there are no interventions available to restore degraded cartilage or decelerate disease progression. The diathrodial joint is a complicated organ and its function is to bear weight, perform physical activity and exhibit a joint-specific range of motion during movement. During OA d
