Two syntheses of the C(7)–C(16)-fragment 41 of epothilone D 2 were developed that were based on tin(IV) bromide mediated reactions of 5,6-difunctionalised hex-2-enylstannanes with aldehydes. Of nine organotin compounds tested towards the marine yeastDebaryomyces hansenii, only triphenyltin chloride (Ph3SnCl) and mono-, di-, and tributyltin chloride induced significant K(+) release from cells which was symptomatic of viability loss. An experimental design was developed to obtain a simple procedure for global determination of organic tin compounds in sediment. Sediment was extracted by a two-phase method and tin was determined in the organic extract by electrothermal atomic absorption spectrometry (ETAAS), with palladium as chemical modifier. Advances in the use of organotin(IV) compounds have gained relevant interest in both the chemical and pharmaceutical industry. Tin(IV) form stable complexes with a unique structure and physicochemical properties that are used in organic synthesis as heat stabilizers and catalysts, in drug development as biologically active agents, and in other areas. This review focuses on recent progress in the classical and convenient synthesis procedure, on their mechanism of action, and biological activities as antitumoral and antimicrobial agents.

Despite the huge amount of literature available on butyltins (BuTs), few studies addressed the environmental levels of phenyltins (PhTs), octyltins (OcTs) and total tin (Sn(T)) in environmental samples. An urgent search is being made for generic reagents that promote free radical synthetic transformations as means of banishing the toxic threat of organotin hydrides. Although second-generation tin reagents are beguiling, organosilanes and a range of thiocarbonyl compounds are more intrinsically benign.
