Preservation of functional architecture in visual cortex of cats with experimentally induced hydrocephalus.

We investigated how neural function is preserved or matured in the visual cortex of cats, following the induction of hydrocephalus by kaolin injection. In vivo optical imaging of intrinsic signals in 11-17-week-old hydrocephalic cats revealed orientation maps showing the orderly arrangement of preferred orientations when stimulated by grating stimuli at a low spatial frequency, whereas stimulus-evoked intrinsic signals in response to gratings at a high spatial frequency were often too weak to construct orientation maps. Furthermore, in two of the three hydrocephalic cats, initially deteriorate

Judgement of Line Orientation error analysis distinguishes between severity of cognitive impairment in older adults.

INTRODUCTION: Research demonstrates visuospatial dysfunction as an early marker of neurocognitive disorders (NCDs) in older adults (OAs). The Benton Judgment of Line Orientation is a commonly administered visuospatial task, and error analysis of the degree of misjudgment has been validated to distinguish between cognitively normal and clinical populations in OAs. This study evaluates the utility of applying this previously established error analysis to the RBANS Update: Line Orientation (RBANS-LO). METHODS: This study used a retrospective review of OAs (age ≥60) of varying levels of cognitive

What makes faces special?

What may be special about faces, compared to non-face objects, is that their neural representation may be fundamentally spatial, e.g., Gabor-like. Subjects matched a sequence of two filtered images, each containing every other combination of spatial frequency and orientation, of faces or non-face 3D blobs, judging whether the person or blob was the same or different. On a match trial, the images were either identical or complementary (containing the remaining spatial frequency and orientation content). Relative to an identical pair of images, a complementary pair of faces, but not blobs, reduc

Simultaneous encoding of the direction and orientation of potential targets during reach planning: evidence of multiple competing reach plans.

Reaches performed in many natural situations involve selecting a specific target from a number of alternatives. Recent studies show that before reaching, multiple potential reach targets are encoded in brain regions involved in action control and that, when people are required to initiate the reach before the target is specified, initial hand direction is biased by the spatial distribution of potential targets. These findings have led to the suggestion that the brain, during planning, simultaneously prepares multiple reaches to potential targets. In addition to hand direction, reach planning o

Attentional processes in typically developing children as revealed using brain event-related potentials and their source localization in Attention Network Test.

Attention-related processes include three functional sub-components: alerting, orienting, and inhibition. We investigated these components using EEG-based, brain event-related potentials and their neuronal source activations during the Attention Network Test in typically developing school-aged children. Participants were asked to detect the swimming direction of the centre fish in a group of five fish. The target stimulus was either preceded by a cue (centre, double, or spatial) or no cue. An EEG using 128 electrodes was recorded for 83 children aged 12-13 years. RTs showed significant effects

Evidence for idiothetic and allothetic control of thermo-orientation in feather-feeding lice.

Thermal cues are widely used by ectoparasites to find and exploit hosts. Recently, the wing louse Columbicola columbae (Phthiraptera: Ischnocera) was shown to use thermo-orientation when migrating between host microhabitats. Here, we study the control systems governing thermo-orientation by motion tracking wing lice on spatial and temporal heat gradients. As previously demonstrated, lice placed on spatial heat gradients successfully located nearby heat targets. Unilateral antennectomies were then used to remove spatial aspects of the thermal cue. These lice were still capable of locating heat

Let's cut it short: Italian standardization of the MMSPE (Mini-Mental State Pediatric Examination), a brief cognitive screening tool for school-age children.

A pediatric cognitive screening tool has been shaped in three versions according to school class to assess spatial and temporal orientation, language, reading, writing, drawing, number knowledge, memory, praxis and executive functions in children aged 6-13. It has been standardized on an Italian sample of 807 children. Raw scores were adjusted for critical variables (child's age and parents' education) and a cut-off for the resulting global cognitive score was made available for clinical practice. In line with previous research, adapting the Mini-Mental State Examination to pediatric neuropsyc

Motor and visuospatial abilities in a model of olivocerebellar and retinal degeneration--Lurcher mutant mice of C3H strain.

Lurcher mutant mice represent a natural model of olivocerebellar degeneration. They suffer from loss of Purkinje cells and decreased number of granule cells and inferior olive neurons. The degeneration leads to cerebellar ataxia and deterioration of cognitive functions. Some animals of the C3H strain have also the retinal degeneration. The aim of the study was to analyze the morphology of cerebellar and retinal degeneration and to evaluate the ability of motor coordination and visuospatial orientation in C3H Lurcher mutant mice. Cerebella of Lurcher mutant and wild type mice were examined with

Gravity-dependent choice of frame of reference in the posterior parietal cortex.

Reference frame is an essential concept for spatial navigation. The principles underlying the choice of reference frames by neuronal ensembles, especially under natural conditions, which involve sloping terrains, remain unclear. The posterior parietal cortex (PPC) is a central region for navigation and movement control, and it contains several distinct types of reference frames. Here, we investigated the influence of gravity signals on egocentric tuning and allocentric head direction tuning in the mouse PPC by introducing a mismatch between visual input and gravitational signals by tilting the

"Where am I?" A snapshot of the developmental topographical disorientation among young Italian adults.

In the last decade, several cases affected by Developmental Topographical Disorientation (DTD) have been described. DTD consists of a neurodevelopmental disorder affecting the ability to orient in the environment despite well-preserved cognitive functions, and in the absence of a brain lesion or other neurological or psychiatric conditions. Described cases showed different impairments in navigational skills ranging from topographic memory deficits to landmark agnosia. All cases lacked a mental representation of the environment that would allow them to use high-order spatial orientation strateg

Cortical processing of dynamic bodies in the superior occipito-temporal regions of the infants' brain: Difference from dynamic faces and inversion effect.

Previous functional neuroimaging studies imply a crucial role of the superior temporal regions (e.g., superior temporal sulcus: STS) for processing of dynamic faces and bodies. However, little is known about the cortical processing of moving faces and bodies in infancy. The current study used functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) to directly compare cortical hemodynamic responses to dynamic faces (videos of approaching people with blurred bodies) and dynamic bodies (videos of approaching people with blurred faces) in infants' brain. We also examined the body-inversion effect in 5- to 8

A review on screening tests for vestibular disorders.

Although many studies have reported on tests of the vestibular system a valid and reliable, evidence-based screening battery for easy clinical use remains elusive. Many screening tests attempt to assess the vestibulo-ocular reflex. Therefore, head shaking, the Dix-Hallpike maneuver, the supine roll test, and head impulse tests are discussed. Other tests address the spatial orientation functions of the vestibular system, such as the Bucket Test and the Fukuda Stepping test. Still, other tests are based on the known correlates with balance skills, both static and dynamic, such as tandem walking

[Psychophysiological signs of aging in mice F1 (C57BL/6×DBA/2).].

The psychophysiological effects of aging in mice of the line F1 (C57BL/6×DBA/2) at the age of 3, 7, and 14 months were investigated. It was found that the cognitive abilities, memory and spatial orientation in all animals did not depend on age, they were able to form a 4-link food-getting habit. The instability of behavior found in all mice at the stereotyped stage of in the form of periodic reproduction of false and irrational realizations was determined by the peculiarities of the basic nervous processes - increased excitability and weakness of inhibition. It was possible to establish that t

Motion energy versus position tracking: spatial, temporal, and chromatic parameters.

The fundamental question in motion perception is whether motion is an interpretation imposed on an object or feature perceived at separate positions at sequential instants, or whether it is the response of direction-sensitive detectors that can extract the motion-energy in the stimulus, i.e. the orientation of spatio-temporal energy. To answer this question we constructed stimuli whose position changed in one direction while the motion energy contained in the same spatial frequency moved in the same or the opposite direction (by superimposing moving sinusoidal gratings on stationary gratings o

Interhemispheric control of sensory cue integration and self-motion perception.

Spatial orientation necessitates the integration of visual and vestibular sensory cues, in-turn facilitating self-motion perception. However, the neural mechanisms underpinning sensory integration remain unknown. Recently we have illustrated that spatial orientation and vestibular thresholds are influenced by interhemispheric asymmetries associated with the posterior parietal cortices (PPC) that predominantly house the vestibulo-cortical network. Given that sensory integration is a prerequisite to both spatial orientation and motion perception, we hypothesized that sensory integration is simil

An FMRI study of the neural systems involved in visually cued auditory top-down spatial and temporal attention.

Top-down attention to spatial and temporal cues has been thoroughly studied in the visual domain. However, because the neural systems that are important for auditory top-down temporal attention (i.e., attention based on time interval cues) remain undefined, the differences in brain activity between directed attention to auditory spatial location (compared with time intervals) are unclear. Using fMRI (magnetic resonance imaging), we measured the activations caused by cue-target paradigms by inducing the visual cueing of attention to an auditory target within a spatial or temporal domain. Vestibular signals in macaque extrastriate visual cortex are functionally appropriate for heading perception.

Visual and vestibular signals converge onto the dorsal medial superior temporal area (MSTd) of the macaque extrastriate visual cortex, which is thought to be involved in multisensory heading perception for spatial navigation. Peripheral otolith information, however, is ambiguous and cannot distinguish linear accelerations experienced during self-motion from those resulting from changes in spatial orientation relative to gravity. Here we show that, unlike peripheral vestibular sensors but similar to lobules 9 and 10 of the cerebellar vermis (nodulus and uvula), MSTd neurons respond selectively

Raised object on a planar surface stroked across the fingerpad: responses of cutaneous mechanoreceptors to shape and orientation.

The representations of orientation and shape were studied in the responses of cutaneous mechanoreceptors to an isolated, raised object on a planar surface stroked across the fingerpad. The objects were the top portions of a sphere with a 5-mm radius, and two toroids each with a radius of 5 mm along one axis and differing radii of 1 or 3 mm along the orthogonal axis. The velocity and direction of stroking were fixed while the orientation of the object in the horizontal plane was varied. Each object was stroked along a series of laterally shifted, parallel, linear trajectories over the receptive

Relationship between selected orientation rest frame, circular vection and space motion sickness.

Space motion sickness (SMS) and spatial orientation and motion perception disturbances occur in 70-80% of astronauts. People select "rest frames" to create the subjective sense of spatial orientation. In microgravity, the astronaut's rest frame may be based on visual scene polarity cues and on the internal head and body z axis (vertical body axis). The data reported here address the following question: Can an astronaut's orientation rest frame be related and described by other variables including circular vection response latencies and space motion sickness? The astronaut's microgravity spatia
