Blunted cortisol response to acute pre-learning stress prevents misinformation effect in a forced confabulation paradigm.

Research examining the effects of stress on false memory formation has been equivocal, partly because of the complex nature of stress-memory interactions. A major factor influencing stress effects on learning is the timing of stress relative to encoding. Previous work has shown that brief stressors administered immediately before learning enhance long-term memory. Thus, we predicted that brief stress immediately before learning would decrease participants' susceptibility to subsequent misinformation and reduce false memory formation. Eighty-four male and female participants submerged their han

Carrier-reactive hapten-specific cytotoxic T lymphocyte clones originate from a highly preselected T cell repertoire: implications for chemical-induced self-reactivity.

We have recently described trinitrophenyl (TNP)-specific cytotoxic T lymphocyte (CTL) clones from C57BL/6 mice specific for hapten-modified peptides bearing a TNP-lysine in a peripheral position, i.e. in position 7 of H-2Kb-bound octapeptides. CTL recognition of such determinants is always sequence-dependent due to co-recognition of TNP as well as amino acid side chains of the carrier peptide. By the use of glycine-based designer peptides for primary induction of CTL in vitro, we have identified two sub-epitopes on individual position 7-haptenated peptides that form two TcR contact points and

Molecular diversity of combined and complex dystonia: insights from diagnostic exome sequencing.

Combined and complex dystonias are heterogeneous movement disorders combining dystonia with other motor and/or systemic signs. Although we are beginning to understand the diverse molecular causes of these disease entities, clinical pattern recognition and conventional genetic workup achieve an etiological diagnosis only in a minority of cases. Our goal was to provide a window into the variable genetic origins and distinct clinical patterns of combined/complex dystonia more broadly. Between August 2016 and January 2017, we applied whole-exome sequencing to a cohort of nine patients with varied

Aortic valve leaflets are asymmetric and correlated with the origin of coronary arteries.

BACKGROUND: Asymmetry of the aortic valve leaflets has been known since Leonardo Da Vinci, but the relationship between size and shape and origin of the coronary arteries has never been examined. Our aim was to evaluate this anatomy in a population of pediatric patients using a cross-sectional study design. METHODS: Consecutive pediatric patients with trans-esophageal echocardiography (TEE), with or without trans-thoracic echocardiography (TTE), were included in our study. Exclusion criteria: (I) bicuspid aortic valve; (II) aortic valve stenosis; (III) hypoplasia of aortic valve annulus, or a

Modern management of maxillofacial trauma in the emergency department.

BACKGROUND: Maxillofacial trauma represents a significant challenge in emergency medicine, requiring both diagnostic accuracy and prompt intervention while balancing immediate life-saving interventions with preservation of function and aesthetics. The complex anatomy of this region, with its proximity to critical structures, demands a thorough understanding of assessment and management principles. This narrative review aims to provide evidence-based guidelines for emergency physicians managing maxillofacial trauma, with particular emphasis on early recognition of critical injuries, airway mana

Underpinning Endogeneous Damp EDA-Fibronectin in the Activation of Molecular Targets of Rheumatoid Arthritis and Identifcation of its Effective Inhibitors by Computational Methods.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is one of the most severe inflammatory diseases that cause swelling, stiffness and pain in the joints, which pose a significant threat worldwide. Damage-associated molecular patterns (DAMPs) are danger molecules of endogenous origin, released during cell injury or cell death, interacts with various Pattern recognition receptors (PRRs) and activates various inflammatory diseases. One of the DAMP molecules, so-called EDA-fibronectin (Fn) is also responsible for causing RA. EDA-Fn triggers RA through its interaction with TLR4. Apart from TLR4, it is divulged that certain

Multi-target detection of waste composition in complex environments based on an improved YOLOX-S model.

The identification of waste composition based on target-detection is crucial in promoting sustainable solid waste management. However, discrimination of different solid waste categories in the presence of incomplete and insufficient feature information remains a challenge in multi-target detection. This paper proposes an improved You Only Look Once (YOLOX-S) model that enables the effective recognition of different waste components in complex environments, which enhances feature-information extraction ability regarding different dimensions by introducing a convolutional block attention module,

Implication of Immunobiological Function of Melanocytes in Dermatology.

Melanocytes are essential for regulating pigmentation and providing photoprotection in human skin. Originating from neural crest cells, these cells migrate to the basal layer of the epidermis and hair follicles during embryogenesis. Melanosomes, the specialized, membrane-bound organelles are essential for melanin synthesis. Beyond their role in pigmentation, melanocytes exhibit complex immune functions, expressing a variety of immune-related markers and receptors, such as pattern recognition receptors (PRRs), major histocompatibility complex class II (MHC-II) molecules, CD40, intercellular adh

Membrane Heteroreceptor Complexes as Second-Order Protein Modulators: A Novel Integrative Mechanism through Allosteric Receptor-Receptor Interactions.

Bioluminescence and fluorescence resonance energy transfer (BRET and FRET) together with the proximity ligation method revealed the existence of G-protein-coupled receptors, Ionotropic and Receptor tyrosine kinase heterocomplexes, e.g., A2AR-D2R, GABAA-D5R, and FGFR1-5-HT1AR heterocomplexes. Molecular integration takes place through allosteric receptor-receptor interactions in heteroreceptor complexes of synaptic and extra-synaptic regions. It involves the modulation of receptor protomer recognition, signaling and trafficking, as well as the modulation of behavioral responses. Allosteric recep

Case report: Recurrent cervical spinal stenosis masquerading as myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome with orthostatic intolerance.

INTRODUCTION: Myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS) is a complex, chronic, multi-system disorder that is characterized by a substantial impairment in the activities that were well tolerated before the illness. In an earlier report, we had described three adult women who met criteria for ME/CFS and orthostatic intolerance, and had congenital or acquired cervical spinal stenosis. All three experienced substantial global improvements in their ME/CFS and orthostatic intolerance symptoms after recognition and surgical treatment of the cervical stenosis. After a several year pe

Speech- and sound-segmentation in dyslexia: evidence for a multiple-level cortical impairment.

Developmental dyslexia involves deficits in the visual and auditory domains, but is primarily characterized by an inability to translate the written linguistic code to the sound structure. Recent research has shown that auditory dysfunctions in dyslexia might originate from impairments in early pre-attentive processes, which affect behavioral discrimination. Previous studies have shown that whereas dyslexic individuals are deficient in discriminating sound distinctions involving consonants or simple pitch changes, discrimination of other sound aspects, such as tone duration, is intact. We hypo

Successful management of parvovirus B19-associated maternal mirror syndrome: A case report and review of the literature.

OBJECTIVE: Maternal mirror syndrome (MMS), or Ballantyne syndrome, is a rare complication of pregnancy characterized by maternal symptoms that parallel fetal hydrops. Though originally associated with rhesus isoimmunization, MMS can result from diverse immune and non-immune conditions, including Parvovirus B19 (PVB19) infection. This report emphasizes the importance of early recognition and management of MMS secondary to PVB19 infection. CASE REPORT: A 38-year-old G2P1 patient at 27 + 2 weeks was diagnosed with severe fetal anemia and hydrops via ultrasound and underwent intrauterine blood tr

View-tuned and view-invariant face encoding in IT cortex is explained by selected natural image fragments.

Humans recognize individual faces regardless of variation in the facial view. The view-tuned face neurons in the inferior temporal (IT) cortex are regarded as the neural substrate for view-invariant face recognition. This study approximated visual features encoded by these neurons as combinations of local orientations and colors, originated from natural image fragments. The resultant features reproduced the preference of these neurons to particular facial views. We also found that faces of one identity were separable from the faces of other identities in a space where each axis represented one

A neuropsychological perspective on the link between language and praxis in modern humans.

Hypotheses about the emergence of human cognitive abilities postulate strong evolutionary links between language and praxis, including the possibility that language was originally gestural. The present review considers functional and neuroanatomical links between language and praxis in brain-damaged patients with aphasia and/or apraxia. The neural systems supporting these functions are predominantly located in the left hemisphere. There are many parallels between action and language for recognition, imitation and gestural communication suggesting that they rely partially on large, common netwo

Effect of the timing of gluten introduction on the development of celiac disease.

Celiac disease (CD) is a permanent auto-immune enteropathy, triggered in genetically predisposed individuals by the ingestion of dietary gluten. Gluten is the alcohol-soluble protein component of the cereals wheat, rye and barley. CD is a multifactorial condition, originating from the interplay of genetic and environmental factors. The necessary environmental trigger is gluten, while the genetic predisposition has been identified in the major histocompatibility complex region on chromosome 6p21, with over 90% of CD patients expressing HLA DQ2 and the remaining celiac patients express DQ8. The

An autonomous fueled machine that replicates catalytic nucleic acid templates for the amplified optical analysis of DNA.

Here we describe a protocol for the amplified detection of a target DNA using a DNA/FokI-based replicating cutting machine. The protocol is based on the design of a sensing hairpin oligonucleotide that is opened upon hybridization with the analyte DNA. The endonuclease FokI binds to the double-stranded complex and cleaves it to a "cutter" unit. The "cutter" unit reacts with a fuel oligonucleotide to generate and amplify the signal. The fuel molecule is an oligonucleotide in a hairpin configuration with a fluorophore/quencher pair attached to the 5' and 3' ends. Formation of the duplex between

Characteristics of protective immunity in mice induced by drug-attenuated larvae of Schistosoma mansoni. Antigen localization and antibody responses.

Partial resistance to reinfection developed in mice with immature infections of Schistosoma mansoni treated with the drug Ro11-3128, whereas mice vaccinated with irradiated cercariae and treated in a similar way did not become immune. Persistence of drug-treated parasites in the skin and draining lymph nodes, which prolonged the opportunity for efficient Ag presentation, was necessary for the development of protective immunity. Death and clearance of parasites solely in the skin, was not sufficient to induce protection. The expansion in the number of lymphocytes in the skin-draining nodes afte

Development of portable and highly sensitive electrochemical sensor for rapid on-site analysis of levofloxacin residue in pork samples.

Levofloxacin is widely utilized as a livestock feed additive, yet its residues in animal-derived foods pose risks to human health. Herein, a portable and highly sensitive electrochemical sensor was developed for on-site levofloxacin detection in food of animal origin. The sensor employs facile electrochemical polymerization of 2-hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin (HP-β-CD) on electrodes, leveraging its dual recognition: hydrophobic cavities form complexes with levofloxacin, while hydroxypropyl groups enable hydrogen bonding to enhance the specificity. The optimized parameters endowed the sensors wit

Caudate Head Ischemic Stroke with Concurrent Tubercular Meningoencephalitis: A Case Report.

Background and Clinical Significance: The pathogenesis of ischemic lesions in tubercular meningoencephalitis remains unclear, as do the best therapeutic strategies during the acute phase and for secondary prevention. Case Presentation: We report on an atypical case of tubercular meningoencephalitis with a concomitant ischemic stroke. The infectious origin of the ischemic lesion was hypothesized due to a discrepancy between clinical and radiological findings. The patient underwent neuroimaging, blood tests, and a lumbar puncture to diagnose tubercular meningoencephalitis. She subsequently start

[Amyloid Registry Kiel : An interim balance].

Amyloid is a pathologic fibrillar aggregation of polypeptides in a cross-β-sheet conformation. Amyloidoses are caused by the deposition of amyloid and may occur as cerebal and extracerebral diseases. A total of 35 different amyloid proteins have been identified. The Amyloid Registry Kiel was founded in 2009 at the Department of Pathology of the Christian-Albrechts-University Kiel. It currently houses more than 6700 cases of diverse anatomical origin with histologically confirmed amyloid and amyloidosis. This large series of cases provides unique insights into an otherwise rare disease. This in
