[Juvenile rheumatoid arthritis: the role of the TMJ and stomatognathic system].

Juvenile chronic arthritis (j.c.a) often affects the maxillo-facial complex over all in relation to jaw and temporo-mandibular joint (TMJ). In this work 35 j.c.a. patients (aged 6 to 16 years) have been selected and studied in order to detect functional and morphostructural involvement of stomatognathic apparatus and TMJ. The involvement of these structures is appeared significantly increased during j.c.a. also in patients without clinic symptoms referable to a stomatognathic apparatus pathology. Therefore an early diagnosis as well as a preventive orthognatodontic treatment are necessary to r

Characterization and correlation analysis of oral NET markers and inflammatory factor levels in patients after orthodontic treatment: a pilot study.

INTRODUCTION: Changes in oral neutrophil number and function may occur in patients after orthodontic treatment, affecting the oral immune microenvironment. However, the specific mechanisms are unclear. In this study, we describe the changes in the levels of neutrophil extracellular traps (NET) markers and inflammatory factors in the gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) and saliva of patients after orthodontic treatment and further explore the correlation between them. METHODS: 68 patients underwent fixed orthodontic treatment in the Department of Orthodontics from January 2021 to June 2023 were se

Statins in Orthodontics: Pharmacological Modulation of Relapse and Tooth Movement.

The primary aim of orthodontic treatment is to achieve optimal dental alignment and functional occlusion. However, several complications, such as root resorption, inflammatory reactions, anchorage instability, delayed tooth movement, and post-treatment relapse, may compromise long-term treatment outcomes. Statins are well-known antihyperlipidemic agents and among the most commonly prescribed drugs worldwide. Recently, statins have attracted attention as potential adjuvants in orthodontic therapy, with several preclinical findings suggesting their ability to prevent orthodontic relapse and infl

Chronic nail biting, orthodontic treatment and Enterobacteriaceae in the oral cavity.

BACKGROUND: Chronic nail biting is common in children and young adults. Auto inoculation of environmental pathogens can manifest as infection in distant organs. Multi-drug resistance gram negative bacteria are on the rise globally. Several of the foodborne bacteria fall within the Enterobacteriaceae family but very few studies have explored these microbes in the oral cavity of children with chronic nail-biting habit or orthodontic treatment. The study aims to investigate oral load of Enterobacteriaceae in children with chronic nail-biting habit and or those undergoing orthodontic treatment. M

[Dental alveolar bone and dental arch remodeling in children: orthodontic diagnosis and treatments based on individual child arch development].

The etiology of malocclusions basically involves both congenital and environmental factors. Malocclusion is the result of the abnormal development of the orofacial complex (including tooth, dental alveolar bone, upper and lower jaws). Early orthodontic interceptive treatments involve the elimination of all congenital and environmental factors that contribute to the malformation of the orofacial complex, as well as interrupt the deviated development of the orofacial complex and the occlusion. Early orthodontic interceptive treatments mainly aim to use children's growth potential to correct abno

The Palatally Impacted Canine, Preorthodontic Uncovering Technique, and Spontaneous Eruption: A Case Series.

Maxillary canines are the second most commonly impacted teeth, with mandibular third molars being the most commonly impacted teeth. One-third of the impacted maxillary canines are labially impacted, and the remaining two-thirds are palatally impacted. Palatally impacted canines (PICs) comprise approximately 1% to 2.5% of the general population. These impactions can be managed with preventive, interceptive techniques or surgical uncovering. If preventive or interceptive measures are unsuccessful in allowing the canine to erupt, there are many techniques that can be employed to uncover the PIC.

Back from the cuspid.

Denture reduction in formal orthodontic treatment does not appear to prevent the impaction of lower third molars. The extraction of premolar teeth is best carried out as close as possible to the eruption time of the cuspids. The posterior part of the mandibular arch should be evaluated by the study of lateral oblique roentgenograms and one of several options regarding treatment should then be adopted.

Orthodontic headgear related to allergic contact dermatitis: a case report.

A case is reported of a 13-year-old girl who developed a facial rash shortly after orthodontic headgear was fitted. Patch testing revealed that she was strongly allergic to nickel and also allergic to cobalt and chrome. A diagnosis of allergic contact dermatitis was made. Painting the metal buckle of the cervical strap with polyurethane paint prevented further development of her rash, while allowing her orthodontic treatment to progress.

Inhibitory effect of the topical administration of a bisphosphonate (risedronate) on root resorption incident to orthodontic tooth movement in rats.

Root resorption associated with tooth movement is an unsolved problem in orthodontics. If such root resorption could be prevented, it would be an important contribution toward reducing risk factors in orthodontic treatment. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of the topical administration of a bisphosphonate, risedronate, which is known to be a potent blocker of bone resorption, on root resorption during tooth movement and on the repair of the resorbed root surface after tooth movement in rats. In the first experiment, both the right and left upper first molars were moved bucc

Effects of Histamine Receptor Antagonist Cetirizine on Orthodontic Tooth Movement.

Many patients regularly take histamine receptor antagonists, such as cetirizine, to prevent allergic reactions, but these antiallergic drugs may have inadvertent effects on orthodontic treatment. In previous studies, histamine has been shown to modulate the sterile inflammatory reaction underlying orthodontic tooth movement. Pertinent effects of histamine antagonization via cetirizine during orthodontic treatment, however, have not been adequately investigated. We thus treated male Fischer344 rats either with tap water (control group) or cetirizine by daily oral gavage corresponding to the cli

Effect of bisphosphonates on orthodontic tooth movement-an update.

Bisphosphonates are a synthetic class of pyrophosphate analogues that are powerful inhibitors of bone resorption which are commonly used as a medication for the prevention and therapy of osteoporosis and osteopenia, also used to treat tumor diseases. As it affects bone metabolism, it is said to have an influence on orthodontic treatment and tooth movement. Also, this review gives an insight into the reported effects of Bisphosphonate medication in literature highlighting the status quo of scientific research regarding effects of Bisphosphonates on orthodontic tooth movement. A systematic liter

[Problems and risks in the movement of the mandibular anterior teeth].

The key role of the lower anterior incisors as well as the complicated anatomical relationship of this area play a significant part in orthodontic treatment planning. Three fundamental points of view are selected here for discussion: 1. the variability and clinical relevance of the initial periodontal findings, 2. the importance of the symphysis to sagittal and vertical tooth movement, and, 3. the specific problem associated with periodontal bone loss. The few clinical and experimental studies found in the literature indicate that every anterior tooth movement has to be oriented according to t
