The authors present a 24-year-old male with a history of class III occlusal deformity who underwent a maxillary advancement with LeFort I osteotomies. Eighteen months after surgery, he was diagnosed with bothersome Eustachian tube dysfunction (ETD). Anatomical shifts secondary to the LeFort osteotomies required for maxillary advancement result in vector changes of muscles that regulate the function of the Eustachian tube. This realignment of muscles is suspected to be a major contributing factor in causing this patient's new onset Eustachian tube dysfunction. This article represents a pilot pr

The goal of this study was to describe a series of orthognathic surgery cases in which a clear aligner system was used for orthodontic treatment. A total of 16 cases were undertaken. A majority of the patients were female (68.75%), and the mean age of the patients was 26.78 years (SD 10.85 years). The most frequent malocclusion was Class II (56.25%), mainly caused by mandibular retrognathism (80.00%). Most of the patients were treated with single-jaw surgeries (56.15%). Orthodontic buttons and elastics were used for maxillomandibular fixation in 81.25% of the patients. The mean (SD) treatment

BACKGROUND: Orthognathic surgery addresses facial aesthetics and function in patients with dentofacial deformities. It is associated with changes in upper airway volume (UAV). If changes in UAV are perceived by asymptomatic patients is unclear.
PURPOSE: The purpose was to measure associations between changes in UAV and patient-reported benefits using patient-reported outcome measures.
STUDY DESIGN: A sample presenting dentofacial deformities without reported breathing problems undergoing orthognathic surgery was retrospectively studied. Patients aged 18-30 years with 12-month follow-up were

Orthognathic surgery often requires extensive orthodontic preparation and a prolonged postoperative recovery that can be stressful for patients and their families. Parents are a primary source of support for patients; accordingly, a better understanding of the parents' experience of orthognathic surgery can help inform clinical care. Using a prospective cross-sectional qualitative study design, 4 focus groups (2 English and 2 Spanish; mean length 65 min) were held with parents of patients who had completed orthognathic surgery for class II/III malocclusion. Thematic content analysis of the gro

Orthognathic surgery to treat dentofacial discrepancies has become an increasingly common elective procedure in sur-gical practices. Despite its numerous advantages such as improved aesthetics and masticatory and respiratory function, some complications and unfavorable results can be observed. Pseudoarthrosis after orthognathic surgery is a rare complication and is little reported in the literature. Pseudoarthrosis is characterized by an increasing occlusal worsening associated with bone mobility and pain. Due to the low incidence of pseudoarthrosis, it is necessary to study its involvement to

BACKGROUND: Patients with dentofacial anomalies may undergo orthognathic surgery to address functional and aesthetic concerns. Past works have evaluated determinants affecting length of stay (LOS) in patients undergoing upper and/or lower jaw surgery alone. No studies have assessed the addition of genioplasty to double-jaw (Lefort I, bilateral sagittal split osteotomy (BSSO))) surgery and its effect on LOS and other outcomes. This study investigates whether the addition of genioplasty incurs additional morbidity to patients undergoing complex orthognathic surgery.
METHODS: This was a retrospe

The aim of this study was to retrospectively assess the osteosynthesis material-related morbidity rates of third-generation (3.0) slotplates, and to compare those with the previously researched second-generation (2.0) slotplates. In the 2.0 slotplate design, there were additional tabs in line with the vertical slotted screw hole; in between these tabs, the additional locking screw was placed. In the 3.0 slotplates, these tabs were replaced by a full screw hole for the locking screw, and the 3.0 slotplates are slightly broader than the 2.0 slotplates. Osteosynthesis material-related morbidity r

Cantú syndrome (CS) is a rare autosomal dominant disorder caused by a heterozygous pathogenic variant in the ABCC9 or KCNJ8 gene. The disorder is characterized by congenital generalized hypertrichosis, coarse acromegaloid facial features (broad nasal bridge, epicanthal folds, wide mouth, macroglossia), skeletal abnormalities (calvarial thickening, metaphyseal flares, coxa valga, scoliosis), tortuous vasculature (meningeal arteriovenous malformations), and cardiac abnormalities (patent ductus arteriosus, pericardial effusion). Despite the constellation of craniofacial features, there are curren

The investigators hypothesized there would be differences between the sexes in recovery pattern following bimaxillary orthognathic surgery as measured by patient responses at 5 weeks postprocedure. A total of 378 participants underwent bimaxillary orthognathic surgery with or without adjunctive procedures. Participants received questionnaires 5 weeks postsurgery when they visited the outpatient clinic. The questionnaires include variances in surgical factors by sex, and postoperative symptoms which were most difficult to tolerate experiences by sex, respectively. Females were more likely to un

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Postoperative pain is well known and usually disturbing complication of surgery. Inflammation plays an important role in the development and progression of postoperative pain. We aimed to investigate possible relationship between preoperatively measured neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) - as an inflammation marker - and postoperative analgesic demand in patients underwent orthognathic surgery.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively investigated medical and anesthesia records of 177 patients underwent orthognathic surgery. Demographical data, preoperative NLR, type of su

INTRODUCTION: Class III relationships can be corrected with single-jaw or bimaxillary surgery. The purpose of this research was to assess patient satisfaction after bimaxillary surgery, compared with setback surgery alone, for Class III corrections. Identifying patients' relative levels of satisfaction will provide guidance for the selection of surgical options.
METHODS: The cephalometric outcomes for 25 patients who underwent 2-jaw surgery were compared with the outcomes in 40 patients who had mandibular setback. Soft and hard tissue changes were evaluated using initial and postsurgical late

Lip canting is associated with facial asymmetry, and is one of the most challenging problems in surgical correction of facial deformities. The author corrected lip canting using bioabsorbable devices during orthognathic surgery. Soft tissue suspension procedures were performed on four patients with facial asymmetry. Lip lines improved for all patients. Over an observation period of five years, no complications were noted, nor did any late relapse develop. Furthermore, as time past, the effect of the Endotine suspension procedure increased probably due to induction of fibrosis on surrounding so

PURPOSE: Proportionality of the lower and middle thirds of the face is a key determinant of successful orthognathic treatment. A flatter profile and marked variance of the soft tissue envelope in the Japanese population complicates the accurate assessment of these proportions. This study aimed to identify gender differences and establish norms for Japanese young adults using the method of soft tissue cephalometric analysis (STCA) by Arnett et al (Am J Orthod Dentofacial Orthop 116:239, 1999).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Lateral cephalograms of 49 young normal Japanese subjects (19 men, 30 women) w

Angioneurotic oedema is an acute swelling involving the submucosal or subcutaneous tissues; it is most often located in the oral and maxillofacial region, which can result in upper airway obstruction. Its aetiology is frequently associated with immunoglobulin-mediated hypersensitivity reactions that elicit a heightened inflammatory response. The objective of this study was to report the case of a patient who developed an episode of angioneurotic oedema following combined orthognathic surgery. Pharmacological and nonpharmacological interventions used in the treatment of this important clinical
