This article, a review of factors controlling vasopressin (AVP) release in pregnancy, extends our contribution to a symposium in this journal published in 1987 (vol X, pp 270-275). Body tonicity decreases (approximately 10 mOsm/kg) very early in pregnancy due to decrements in the osmotic thresholds for AVP release and thirst. In addition, the metabolic clearance rate (MCR) of AVP markedly increases between gestational week 10 and midpregnancy, and is paralleled by the appearance and increase of circulating cystine aminopeptidase (vasopressinase), while the MCR of 1-deamino-8-D-AVP (DDAVP), an

The mechanisms by which hydrogen sulfide (H2S) treatment alleviates chilling injury (CI) in cold-stored peach fruit through the enhancement of osmoregulatory substances accumulation require further investigation. Exogenous H2S treatment increased the levels of osmolyte-related amino acids (glutamate (Glu), ornithine (Orn), and arginine (Arg)); enhanced the activity of γ-Aminobutyric acid (GABA) metabolism-related enzymes and expression of PpGAD1, PpGAD2, and PpGABA-T; and elevated activity of polyamines (PAs) metabolism-related enzymes and expression of PpADC, PpODC, PpPAO1, and PpPAO2, ultima

Taurine, a conditionally essential amino acid with unique sulfur-containing groups, has many fundamental physiologic processes, including osmoregulation and bile acid conjugation. Atherosclerosis (AS) can lead to numerous severe vascular adverse events, such as stroke, coronary artery disease, and myocardial infarction, posing a significant threat to human health. Taurine plays a role in multiple targets associated with the development of AS. It regulates lipid metabolism, reduces platelet activation and aggregation, and suppresses uncontrolled proliferation of vascular smooth muscle cells. Ad

Discovery of aquaporin water channel proteins has provided insight into the molecular mechanism of membrane water permeability. The distribution of known mammalian aquaporins predicts roles in physiology and disease. Aquaporin-1 mediates proximal tubule fluid reabsorption, secretion of aqueous humor and cerebrospinal fluid, and lung water homeostasis. Aquaporin-2 mediates vasopressin-dependent renal collecting duct water permeability; mutations or downregulation can cause nephrogenic diabetes insipidus. Aquaporin-3 in the basolateral membrane of the collecting duct provides an exit pathway for

Aquaporins-among them, AQP5-are responsible for transporting water across biological membranes, which is an important process in all living organisms. The transient receptor potential channel 4 (TRPV4) is a cation channel that is mostly calcium-permeable and can also be activated by osmotic stimuli. It plays a role in a number of different functions in the body, e.g., the development of bones and cartilage, and it is involved in the body's osmoregulation, the generation of certain types of sensation (pain), and apoptosis. Our earlier studies on the uterus and the literature data aroused our in

In all vertebrates, the thyroid axis is an endocrine feedback system that affects growth, differentiation, and reproduction, by sensing and translating central and peripheral signals to maintain homeostasis and a proper thyroidal set-point. Fish, the most diverse group of vertebrates, rely on this system for somatic growth, metamorphosis, reproductive events, and the ability to tolerate changing environments. The vast majority of the research on the thyroid axis pertains to mammals, in particular rodents, and although some progress has been made to understand the role of this endocrine axis in

Prolactin (PRL) is a hormone, mainly secreted by lactotroph cells of the anterior pituitary gland. Recent studies have shown it may also be produced by many extrapituitary cells. Its well-recognized PRL plays an important role in lactation during pregnancy, but it is involved in other biological functions such as angiogenesis, immunoregulation and osmoregulation. Hyperprolactinemia is a typical condition producing reproductive dysfunction in both sexes, resulting in hypogonadism, infertility and galactorrhea. It may be also asymptomatic. Lactotroph adenomas (prolactinoma) is one of the most co

Since its introduction as a genetic vertebrate model system approximately 30 years ago, the focus of zebrafish research has increasingly shifted to questions that are also relevant for human development and disease. Here, we review the potential of the zebrafish as a model for human endocrine systems. A recent review compared the functions of the different endocrine systems and glands in zebrafish with those in other vertebrates, including humans, coming to the conclusion that major aspects are conserved. Here, we present an updated overview of this rapidly growing field of zebrafish research,

Oligoglucose molecules isolated from Azorhizobium caulinodans were characterized by compositional analysis, Smith degradation, matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time of flight mass spectrometry, and (1)H and (13)C nuclear magnetic resonance analysis. A. caulinodans produced nonbranched and unsubstituted cyclic glucans composed solely of glucose, with the degree of polymerization ranging from 10 to 13. A major fraction of the periplasmic glucans contains 11 glucose residues within rings. The glucose residues are linked by beta-(1,3) and beta-(1,6) glycosidic bonds. These molecules see

A patient with the chronic hypernatraemia syndrome is described. Using a sensitive and specific radioimmunoassay, the plasma arginine-vasopressin (AVP) level was measured under various conditions. With an unrestricted diet, the plasma AVP level was inappropriately low for the degree of plasma hyperosmolality (0.9 pmol/l and 302 mOsm/kg, respectively). After chronic water loading, plasma osmolality was 271 mOsm/kg, plasma AVP level 1.5 pmol/l, and the urine remained hypertonic with respect to the plasma. During hypertonic saline infusion, plasma osmolality increased from 271 to 294 mOsm/kg with

Bacterial growth and division rely on intricate regulation of morphogenetic complexes to remodel the cell envelope without compromising envelope integrity. Significant progress has been made in recent years towards understanding the regulation of cell wall metabolic enzymes. However, other cell envelope components play a role in morphogenesis as well. A primary factor required to protect envelope integrity in low osmolarity environments is OpgH, the synthase of osmoregulated periplasmic glucans (OPGs). Here, we demonstrate that OpgH is essential in the α-proteobacterium Caulobacter crescentus.

OBJECTIVE: Superpulsed radiofrequency, a new energy, has been developed and applied in transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) using a regular cutting loop. The aim of the study was to evaluate the clinical application of superpulsed radiofrequency to reduce bleeding morbidity and to improve patient outcome. The original results of the experimental and clinical study are presented.
METHODS: From November 1997 to June 1998, 37 patients were submitted to a clinical, nonrandomized study. The age range was 45-81 years. All patients completed the International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS)

Bacterial diadenylate cyclase (DAC) enzymes synthesize the nucleotide signal 3'3' cyclic di-AMP (3'3'-c-di-AMP) to control osmoregulation, cell-wall homeostasis, and DNA-damage responses. Here we discover specialized roles for DAC enzymes in bacterial immunity and define a Panoptes-like system we name Panoptoo as a DAC-containing anti-phage defense that guards against viral immune evasion. The Panoptoo protein PanS is a minimal DAC that constitutively synthesizes 3'3' cyclic UMP-AMP (3'3'-cUA) or 3'3'-c-di-AMP to negatively regulate a partnering PanE S2TMβ membrane-targeting effector. We show

A woman in her 50s developed persistent hypernatremia after aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage treated with surgical clipping. During the acute phase, she presented transient hypotonic polyuria requiring desmopressin, initially suggesting arginine vasopressin (AVP) deficiency (AVP-D). However, her subsequent course was characterized by recurrent hypernatremia without persistent polyuria and with complete absence of thirst. Urine output was low or inappropriately normal, with preserved urinary concentrating capacity, making persistent AVP-D unlikely. Neuroimaging showed ischemic changes close t

Hyaluronic acid in vivo serves a multitude of functions, including water retention and osmoregulation. Inhibition of hyaluronidase activity prevents the degradation of hyaluronic acid, thereby preserving its normal physiological functions. Fucoidan is a natural sulfated polysaccharide extracted from brown algae. Here, bovine testicular hyaluronidase was separated and purified as a basis for investigating the inhibitory effect of fucoidan on hyaluronidase activity. The experimental results showed that fucoidan exhibited strong competitive inhibition of hyaluronidase activity, with an IC50 value

Pigment-dispersing factors (PDFs) are neuropeptides that play key roles in controlling the circadian rhythms in various insects, whereas their function remains elusive in other protostomes including tardigrades (water bears). Here we show that the three PDFs of the tardigrade Hypsibius exemplaris are co-localized in two pairs of inner lobe cells in the brain, whereas only one PDF occurs in four additional cerebral and two extracerebral cells. The axons of the inner lobe cells pass through the contralateral brain hemisphere, descend to the ventral nerve cord and terminate in two pairs of potent

Nuclear factor of activated T-cells (NFAT5) is a tissue specific, osmoadaptive transcription factor essential for the control of hydration homeostasis in mammalian cells. Nuclear factor of activated T-cells regulates osmolyte transporters aldo-keto reductase family 1 member B1 (AKR1B1) and solute carrier family 5 member 3 (SLC5A3) to maintain fluid equilibrium in cells. The osmotic potential of the extracellular matrix of leiomyomas is attributed to the role of proteoglycans. In leiomyoma cells, NFAT5 is overexpressed compared to myometrial cells. The selective progesterone receptor modulator,

Blastocystis spp. are common human enteric parasites with complex morphology and have been reported to cause irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Deconvolutional microscopy with time-lapse imaging and fluorescent spectroscopy of xenic cultures of Blastocystis spp. from stool samples of IBS patients and from asymptomatic, healthy pigs allowed observations of living organisms in their natural microbial environment. Blastocystis organisms of the vacuolated, granular, amoebic and cystic forms were observed to autofluorescence in the 557/576 emission spectra. Autofluorescence could be distinguished from

A family suffering from cranial diabetes insipidus, that extends over 4 generations, is described. Inheritance of polyuria was autosomal dominant. Vasopressin function was studied in members of the last 2 generations, 4 of whom had polyuria. Osmoregulation of vasopressin secretion was assessed by infusion of hypertonic saline. Plasma vasopressin remained undetectable in one patient, while 2 others had very blunted vasopressin responses to osmotic stimulation. Three non-osmotic stimuli were applied. Controlled hypotension produced by trimetaphan infusion and insulin-induced hypoglycaemia did no

While it was previously believed that neuromyelitis optic spectrum disorder (NMOSD) mostly affected the optic nerves and the spinal cord, it is increasingly recognized that NMOSD can involve any area of the CNS where aquaporin-4 is highly expressed. These other areas can include the hypothalamus and the circumventricular organs that surround the third and fourth ventricles, serving as osmoregulators. The syndrome of inappropriate antidiuretic hormone secretion (SIADH) is one of the most common causes of hyponatremia and has been associated with NMOSD due to these lesions. In this report, we pr
