A Chondroblastic Osteosarcoma of the Patella: A Case Report.

Osteosarcoma is a form of bone cancer that can originate in any bone throughout the body, although it is most commonly detected in the long bones of the arms and legs. Chondroblastic osteosarcoma, a rare variation of osteosarcoma, is associated with a greater likelihood of recurrence and metastasis. The term "chondroblastic" indicates that certain portions of the tumor have undergone changes, resembling a connective tissue called cartilage. In this report, we present an exceptional case of osteosarcoma affecting the patella. A 54-year-old patient sought consultation at our outpatient clinic, r

Investigation of the activity of a novel tropolone in osteosarcoma.

Osteosarcoma (OS) is a primary malignant bone tumor characterized by frequent metastasis, rapid disease progression, and a high rate of mortality. Treatment options for OS have remained largely unchanged for decades, consisting primarily of cytotoxic chemotherapy and surgery, thus necessitating the urgent need for novel therapies. Tropolones are naturally occurring seven-membered non-benzenoid aromatic compounds that possess antiproliferative effects in a wide array of cancer cell types. MO-OH-Nap is an α-substituted tropolone that has activity as an iron chelator. Here, we demonstrate that MO

Osteosarcoma of the ethmoid sinus: About a case.

Osteosarcomas of the craniofacial bones account for less than 10% of all osteosarcomas. Primary osteosarcomas of the nasal cavity and paranasal sinus are rare localization (0.5%-8.1% of osteosarcomas occur in this site). Accordingly, we report a case of osteosarcoma arising de novo from the ethmoid bone in a 46-year-old female. Initially, she presented with headache, bilateral epistaxis, and postnasal drip. Biopsy revealed an osteosarcoma ethmoidal. The patient was treated by a neoadjuvant chemotherapy followed by surgical resection and radiotherapy.

Telangiectatic osteosarcoma of maxilla in a young child.

Telangiectatic osteosarcoma (TO) is an uncommon variant of osteosarcoma that primarily afflicts young adults. In this case report, we describe a unique instance of TO occurring in a young child's maxilla. Under microscopic examination, it reveals abundant blood-filled spaces, extensive hemorrhagic regions, alongside atypical pleomorphic tumor cells and osteoid. It is crucial to conduct a meticulous histopathological examination to distinguish TO from other lesions, such as aneurysmal bone cysts and Ewing sarcoma.

Myelolipoma mimicking osteosarcoma in the distal femur.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Periosteal reactions indicate malignant bone tumors, including osteosarcoma; establishing an accurate diagnosis is key to determining the most appropriate treatment strategy. We describe a rare case of myelolipoma in the distal femur metaphysis with massive extraskeletal lesions and periosteal reactions. CASE PRESENTATION: A 25-year-old woman was referred to our hospital to treat a gradually expanding mass around her knee that grew to the size of a baby's head. She had a history of hydrocephalus caused by congenital cytomegalovirus infection and was bedridden for

Limb Salvage and Reconstruction Options in Osteosarcoma.

Advances in chemotherapy, sophisticated imaging, and surgical techniques over the last few decades have allowed limb-salvage surgery (LSS) to become the preferred surgical treatment for bone sarcomas of the extremities. The goal of LLS is to maximize limb functionality to allow for the maintenance of quality of life without compromising overall survival and tumor local recurrence rates. Today, limb-salvage procedures are performed on 80-95% of patients with extremity osteosarcoma, and the 5-year survival rate in extremity osteosarcoma patients is now 60-75%.This chapter will focus on LSS for e

Novel therapeutic strategies for spinal osteosarcomas.

At the dawn of the third millennium, cancer has become the bane of twenty-first century man, and remains a predominant public health burden, affecting welfare and life expectancy globally. Spinal osteogenic sarcoma, a primary spinal malignant tumor, is a rare and challenging neoplastic disease to treat. After the conventional therapeutic modalities of chemotherapy, radiation and surgery have been exhausted, there is currently no available alternative therapy in managing cases of spinal osteosarcoma. The defining signatures of tumor survival are characterised by cancer cell ability to stonewall

Novel molecular and metabolic aspects in osteosarcoma.

Osteosarcoma (OS) is the most frequent bone-forming malignancy in children and adolescents. Concerning its molecular landscape, there is no a direct relationship with a specific gene, but a combination of genetic events. A broad spectrum of activated oncogenes and downregulated suppressor genes has been already explored and considered crucial for its progressive pathogenesis. Mechanisms of gene deregulation include amplifications, point mutations, allelic losses and also epigenetic abnormalities such as aberrant promoter methylation. Although a significant progress in understanding the molecul

Expression of nociceptive ligands in canine osteosarcoma.

BACKGROUND: Canine osteosarcoma (OS) is associated with localized pain as a result of tissue injury from tumor infiltration and peritumoral inflammation. Malignant bone pain is caused by stimulation of peripheral pain receptors, termed nociceptors, which reside in the localized tumor microenvironment, including the periosteal and intramedullary bone cavities. Several nociceptive ligands have been determined to participate directly or indirectly in generating bone pain associated with diverse skeletal abnormalities. HYPOTHESIS: Canine OS cells actively produce nociceptive ligands with the capa

Custom facial reconstruction for osteosarcoma of the jaw.

Osteosarcoma accounts for most primary bone cancers in children and young adults. High-grade lesions are typically managed with a combination of chemotherapy and wide-margin surgical excision. Although this malignancy typically affects the metaphyseal region of long bones, it also can be seen in the axial skeleton. Of axial locations, tumors in the head and neck can be particularly troubling to treat. Segmental bone loss after resection of malignant mandibular tumors continues to present important challenges to the reconstructive surgeon. Recent advancements in 3-dimensional modeling have faci

The expression and function of miRNA-451 in osteosarcoma.

MicroRNA-451 has been proven down-regulated in many human malignancies and correlated with tumor progression. However, its expression and clinical significance in osteosarcoma is still unclear. Thus, the aim of this study was to explore the effects of miR-451 in osteosarcoma tumorigenesis and development. The expression level of miR-451 was quantified by quantitative real-time reverse-transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction in primary osteosarcoma tissues and osteosarcoma cell lines. MTT, flow cytometric, and scratch migration assay were used to test the proliferation, apoptosis, and migration

NPRL2 is an independent prognostic factor of osteosarcoma.

NPRL2 is a tumor suppressor gene whose inactivation contributes to tumor development. However, NPRL2 expression in osteosarcoma remains unclear. This study aimed to assess NPRL2 expression in osteosarcoma and analyze its potential as a prognostic factor. NPRL2 expression in 48 cases of osteosarcoma and 40 cases of osteochondroma tumors was examined by immunohistochemistry. NPRL2 expression in 20 osteosarcoma and 20 osteochondroma specimens were detected by Real-time PCR and Western blot analysis. We found that 18 cases (37.5%) of osteosarcoma and 27 cases (67.5%) of osteochondroma showed posit

Primary telangiectatic osteosarcoma of the cervical spine.

Telangiectatic osteosarcoma (TOS) is one of the 8 subtypes of osteosarcoma that infrequently affects the spine. The radiopathological features of TOS overlap with those of more benign entities, most commonly the aneurysmal bone cyst), and therefore is a significant diagnostic challenge. It is a rare but well-described entity in the thoracolumbar and sacral spine, and to the authors' knowledge has not been previously reported in the cervical spine. The authors report the case of a 15-year-old boy who presented with a 6-month history of neck pain and torticollis. He underwent preoperative glue e
