Strategies for the avoidance of faeces by grazing sheep.

Experiments were conducted to investigate which environmental cues were used by sheep when discriminating against patches of pasture contaminated with faeces. The influence of the spatial distribution of contaminated patches and the parasite infection status of sheep on avoidance of contaminated patches and ingestion of parasite larvae was also investigated. In experiment 1, sheep infected with the parasite Ostertagia circumcincta were given the opportunity to graze in uncontaminated or aggregated contaminated patches. Patch contamination comprised of either faeces from sheep infected with O. …

Tracking gastrointestinal nematode risk on cattle farms through pasture contamination mapping.

Gastrointestinal nematode (GIN) parasites in grazing cattle are a major cause of production loss and their control is increasingly difficult due to anthelmintic resistance and climate change. Rotational grazing can support control and decrease reliance on chemical intervention, but is often complex due to the need to track grazing periods and infection levels, and the effect of weather on larval availability. In this paper, a simulation model was developed to predict the availability of infective larvae of the bovine GIN, Ostertagia ostertagi, at the level of individual pastures. The model was…

Rapid changes in the surface of parasitic nematodes during transition from pre- to post-parasitic forms.

All mammalian-parasitic stages of a range of nematode species investigated (Brugia pahangi, Acanthocheilonema viteae, Strongyloides ratti, Nippostrongylus brasiliensis, Trichinella spiralis and Ostertagia ostertagi) labelled in a surface-restricted manner with the fluorescent lipid analogues 5-N-(octadecanoyl)aminofluorescein (AF18) or nitrobenzoxadiazole-cholesterol (NBD-chol), but failed to bind other similar probes. In contrast, the surfaces of the 'pre-parasitic' infective stages of these species had affinity for neither AF18 nor NBD-chol. This exclusion of lipid analogues changed rapidly …

P-glycoprotein-9 and macrocyclic lactone resistance status in selected strains of the ovine gastrointestinal nematode, Teladorsagia circumcincta.

The Teladorsagia circumcincta P-glycoprotein-9 (Tci-pgp-9) gene has previously been implicated in multiple-anthelmintic resistance in this parasite. Here we further characterise genetic diversity in Tci-pgp-9 and its possible role in ivermectin (IVM) and multi-drug resistance using two UK field isolates of T. circumcincta, one susceptible to anthelmintics (MTci2) and the other resistant to most available anthelmintics including IVM (MTci5). A comparison of full-length Tci-pgp-9 cDNA transcripts from the MTci2 and MTci5 isolates (∼3.8 kb in both cases) indicated that they shared 95.6% and 99.5%

Genetic correlations between endo-parasite phenotypes and economically important traits in dairy and beef cattle.

Parasitic diseases have economic consequences in cattle production systems. Although breeding for parasite resistance can complement current control practices to reduce the prevalence globally, there is little knowledge of the implications of such a strategy on other performance traits. Records on individual animal antibody responses to Fasciola hepatica, Ostertagia ostertagi, and Neospora caninum were available from cows in 68 dairy herds (study herds); national abattoir data on F. hepatica-damaged livers were also available from dairy and beef cattle.
