The levonorgestrel intrauterine device (LNG-IUD) is a safe, effective, long-acting, reversible contraceptive that reduces unintended pregnancy and decreases heavy menstrual bleeding. Many procedures such as IUD insertion are more challenging in overweight and obese women. The objective of this study was to describe LNG-IUD insertion, continuation, and complications in overweight and obese women in an ethnically diverse population in Hawai'i. A retrospective cohort study of women who had a LNG-IUD inserted at the University of Hawai'i, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology Resident and Facult

PURPOSE: To compare atherogenic lipoprotein particles and vascular smooth muscle biomarkers in overweight youth with pre-diabetes (PD) vs. normal glucose tolerance (NGT).
METHODS: 144 adolescents (60 black, 84 white; 102 female; PD=45, NGT=99) aged 10-19 years underwent a fasting blood draw and 2-h OGTT. Lipoprotein particle size and subclass concentration and vascular smooth muscle biomarkers (ICAM-1, VCAM-1 and E-selectin) were compared between youth with PD and NGT.
RESULTS: Compared with NGT, PD adolescents had smaller LDL (mean±SE: 20.5±0.1 vs. 21.0±0.1 nm; P=0.002) and HDL (8.62±0.05 v

BACKGROUND: Numerous studies show that many primary care physicians (PCPs) do not discuss preventive health behaviors related to diet and exercise with their overweight patients.
PURPOSE: To investigate whether certain counseling approaches by PCPs in their clinical encounters with patients are associated with improvements in care and resource utilization.
METHODS: A total of 2205 patients in a large HMO were surveyed, during November and December 2010, about their health behaviors and perceptions of their interactions with their PCPs. Survey responses from each patient were matched with 48

OBJECTIVE: Obesity is associated with adverse health outcomes in people with and without disabilities. However, little is known about disability prevalence among people who are obese. The purpose of this study is to determine the prevalence and type of disability among adults who are obese.
DESIGN AND METHODS: Pooled data from the 2003-2009 National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) were analyzed to obtain national prevalence estimates of disability, disability type and obesity. The disability prevalence was stratified by body mass index (BMI): healthy weight (BMI 18.5-<25.0), overweight (BMI 25

AIM AND OBJECTIVE: This article presents data on attitudes and beliefs about overweight/weight reduction in lesbians. The project was developed to have information on which to base future culturally sensitive interventions to reduce cardiovascular risk in lesbians.
BACKGROUND: Lesbians have been found to have high rates of obesity/overweight and to be more accepting of it. Researchers have hypothesised that this is attributed to different attitudes towards body weight and shape in lesbians than heterosexuals. Little is known about acceptable ways to intervene to decrease cardiovascular risk i

Obstetrician-gynecologists are responsible for promoting healthy eating and physical activity in adolescents during annual screening examinations. Adolescents with a body mass index for age greater than or equal to the 95th percentile should undergo an in-depth health assessment to determine psychosocial morbidity and risk of cardiovascular disease. Further research is needed to determine the most efficacious approach to the prevention and treatment of obesity in adolescents. For now, it is best to extrapolate an approach from data pertaining to children and adults, while being cognizant of th

BACKGROUND/AIMS: To determine a potential correlation of gender, age, and/or body mass index (BMI) with the development of acute-on-chronic liver failure (AOC).
METHODOLOGY: A retrospective 2.5-year study employed 34 patients (65% females and 35% males, aged 37.9 +/- 12.6 years) fulfilling established criteria for acute liver failure (ALF). Patients were subdivided into ALF (n = 18) and AOC (n = 16) groups, according to a history of prior chronic liver disease. Causes of liver failure included drug toxicity (52.9%), viral hepatitis (26.5%), and acute excessive ethanol abuse (11.8%). all anamn

As the prevalence of obesity and obesity-related disease among adolescents in the United States continues to increase, physicians are increasingly faced with the dilemma of determining the best treatment strategies for affected patients. This report offers an approach for the evaluation of adolescent patients' candidacy for bariatric surgery. In addition to anthropometric measurements and comorbidity assessments, a number of unique factors must be critically assessed among overweight youths. In an effort to reduce the risk of adverse medical and psychosocial outcomes and increase compliance an

BACKGROUND: Telomere length (TL) is variable at birth and is inversely associated with body mass index (BMI) in adulthood. A growing number of evidences suggested that a higher maternal pre-pregnancy BMI results in adverse offspring health outcomes, especially shorter newborn TL. However, a newborn's genetic endowment is equally derived from both parents, the association between parental pre-pregnancy BMI and newborn TL has been rarely discussed. We aimed to determine the association between parental pre-pregnancy BMI and newborn TL.
METHODS: A total of 1082 parent-newborn pairs were recruite

Obesity is associated with numerous otolaryngologic conditions, including obstructive sleep apnea, chronic rhinosinusitis, otitis media, and laryngopharyngeal reflux disease, through mechanisms involving chronic inflammation, immune dysregulation, mechanical airway compromise, and metabolic dysregulation. This review examines the evidence linking obesity to otolaryngologic disorders and explores lifestyle interventions relevant to otolaryngologic care. While the strongest evidence supports weight loss for obstructive sleep apnea, benefits extend to other conditions. Practical strategies for in

Few studies have examined trajectories of perinatal depressive symptoms among women with overweight and obesity. We aimed to identify the longitudinal trajectories of perinatal depressive symptoms among women with overweight and obesity and the predictors of these trajectories. Data were obtained from the Health in Pregnancy and Postpartum study (n = 217). Depressive symptoms were measured twice during pregnancy (baseline, 32 weeks gestation) and twice after delivery (6 and 12 months postpartum) by the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS). Group-based trajectory model was used to identi

Background/Objectives: Neurodevelopmental delays can have significant long-term consequences. Given that overweight and obesity have been associated with alterations in several biological processes related to child development, we aimed to evaluate their association with neurodevelopmental delays in children. Methods: We conducted an analytical cross-sectional study among 280 children aged 2-5 years. Child neurodevelopmental information was obtained from the Battelle Developmental Inventory Screening Test, which includes 96 items and measures fundamental developmental skills in five domains: P

INTRODUCTION: Intravenous regular insulin is often used for the management of hyperkalemia due to its rapid onset of action and predictable potassium-lowering effects. Various studies have been conducted to determine optimal insulin dosing strategies that reduce serum potassium levels without increasing hypoglycemia risk. As data shifts towards lower or fixed insulin doses, validating the appropriateness of these dosing regimens for the management of hyperkalemia in overweight patients is warranted. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the serum potassium-lowering effects of 5 units versu

The rising worldwide rates of overweight and obesity make it more probable that an increasing number of women with elevated body mass index (BMI) are conceiving. Therefore, it is crucial to recognize the negative pregnancy outcomes associated with BMI. This retrospective cohort study examined data from mothers who delivered at a tertiary medical facility in Iran, from January 2022 to January 2023. 2930 mothers were categorized into three groups: (1) Normal weight (BMI: 18.5-24.9 kg/m2); (2) Overweight (BMI: 25.0-29.9 kg/m2); and (3) Obese (BMI ≥ 30.0 kg/m2). The outcome measures consisted of m

Increasing evidence has linked obesity to complications of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD); however, data are limited on the efficacy and impact of weight management strategies on the disease course. There are a strikingly limited number of interventional studies on weight management in patients with IBD, and the recent nutrition and IBD guidelines published in the United States do not mention weight management strategies. Overweight and obesity management in patients with IBD should follow a stepwise approach to assessment and treatment, including lifestyle modification, anti-obesity medicat
