Elevated serum levels of TNF-alpha, sTNF-RI and sTNF-RII in murine schistosomiasis correlate with schistosome oviposition and circumoval granuloma formation.

Levels of circulating tumour necrosis factor (TNF-alpha) and its soluble receptors are elevated in chronic human schistosomiasis. However, the kinetics of TNF-alpha production and release of its soluble receptors have not been studied in humans or animals. Here we report on increased levels of TNF-alpha and its soluble receptors in murine schistosomiasis, beginning with schistosome oviposition and circumoval granuloma formation. TNF-alpha, sTNF-RI and sTNF-RII were measured in sera of mice infected with Schistosoma mansoni each week for 10 weeks postinfection. TNF-alpha levels increased gradua

Flower- and Water-Dwelling Yeasts Influence Nectar-Seeking and Oviposition Behavior in the Asian Tiger Mosquito with Distinct Volatile Organic Compound Profiles.

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted by flowers and aquatic microorganisms influence mosquito behavior, but the role of water- and nectar-dwelling yeasts remains underexplored. In Aedes albopictus, we characterized yeast communities from visited and non-visited flowers, and from colonized and non-colonized breeding-site waters in urban community gardens. Mint flowers were preferentially visited, and the yeasts Metschnikowia reukaufii and Aureobasidium pullulans, present at higher densities in this plant, strongly attracted adult males and females, respectively. GC-MS analysis showed that

Potential drivers of Megninia ginglymura (Mégnin) distribution in poultry hens: rearing-system and oviposition microhabitat factors across humid and semi-arid regions.

Megninia ginglymura (Mégnin, 1877) (Acariformes: Analgoidea: Analgidae) is a common feather mite of laying hens and a potential contributor to plumage damage and reduced productivity, yet its population dynamics and microhabitat use remain insufficiently characterized under modern commercial conditions. We conducted a year-long assessment of M. ginglymura abundance and intra-host distribution across three major production systems (Automated, Californian (two localities), and Cage-free), situated along a tropical-semi-arid gradient in a major poultry-producing region Pernambuco, Brazil. Oviposition deterrent activity from the ethanolic extract of Pongamia pinnata, Coleus forskohlii, and Datura stramonium leaves against Aedes aegypti and Culex quinquefaciatus.

Mosquitoes are responsible for spread of many diseases than any other group of arthropods. Diseases such as malaria, filariasis, dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF), and chikunguinya are real threat to mankind. In the present study, ethanolic extracts of leaves of Pongamia pinnata, Coleus forskohlii, and Datura stramonium were evaluated for oviposition deterrent activity against Aedes aegypti and Culex quinquefasciatus. The oviposition deterrent tests of ethanolic extract of Pongamia pinnata, Coleus forskohlii, and Datura stramonium leaves reduced egg laying by 97.62%, 77.3%, 100% against Aedes aeg

Blood feeding and oviposition by Culex nigripalpus (Diptera: Culicidae) before, during, and after a widespread St. Louis encephalitis virus epidemic in Florida.

A widespread epidemic of St. Louis encephalitis (SLE) virus was reported from central Florida from late July through December 1990 with 226 clinical cases and 11 deaths in humans. The abundance of blood-fed and gravid Culex nigripalpus Theobald females, the vector of SLE in Florida, was monitored at a resting site in Indian River County, FL, for the 3 yr before the epidemic, the epidemic year, and for 1 yr following the epidemic. Each study year was divided into four 3-mo periods that depict the subtropical SLE transmission cycle; a January-March maintenance phase, an April-June amplification

Maternal instincts: a review of the role of chemosensory cues and larval habitat conditions on oviposition site choice by gravid Aedes aegypti (Diptera: Culicidae).

Aedes aegypti (Ae. aegypti) is a global vector of arboviruses, including those causing dengue, chikungunya, Zika, and yellow fever. Effective management of Ae. aegypti populations remain challenging due to their anthropophilic feeding behavior, their exploitation of urban environments, their complex oviposition behavior, and their egg physiology. The characteristics of larval habitats can influence various aspects of larval development, thereby altering adult physiology and behavior. These include differences in blood-feeding behavior, reproductive capacity, and lifespan. Gravid females select

Penetrance during Wolbachia-mediated parthenogenesis of Trichogramma wasps is reduced by continuous oviposition, associated with exhaustion of Wolbachia titers in ovary and offspring eggs.

BACKGROUND: Thelytokous Wolbachia-infected Trichogramma wasps are superior to bisexual uninfected wasps regarding biological control programs. However, continuous oviposition weakens the parthenogenesis-inducing (PI) strength of Wolbachia. Whether this reduced PI strength relates to decreases in the titer of Wolbachia in the ovary and offspring eggs of Trichogramma remains unclear. Here, using fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) and reverse transcription quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) methods, we investigated how the penetrance of Wolbachia-mediated parthenogenesis, Wol

The Effects of High-Altitude Windborne Migration on Survival, Oviposition, and Blood-Feeding of the African Malaria Mosquito, Anopheles gambiae s.l. (Diptera: Culicidae).

Recent results of high-altitude windborne mosquito migration raised questions about the viability of these mosquitoes despite ample evidence that many insect species, including other dipterans, have been known to migrate regularly over tens or hundreds of kilometers on high-altitude winds and retain their viability. To address these concerns, we subjected wild Anopheles gambiae s.l. Giles mosquitoes to a high-altitude survival assay, followed by oviposition (egg laying) and blood feeding assays. Despite carrying out the survival assay under exceptionally harsh conditions that probably provide

Investigation of the ability of the oviposition-stimulant lectin from Moringa oleifera seeds (WSMoL) to bind with membrane proteins present in the legs of Aedes aegypti.

The mosquito Aedes aegypti L. is a vector transmitting diseases such as dengue, chikungunya and Zika virus fever. The water-soluble lectin from Moringa oleifera Lam. seeds (WSMoL) is larvicidal, ovicidal and can stimulate oviposition in A. aegypti. This study aimed to investigate whether WSMoL could bind to membrane proteins from A. aegypti legs. Initially, proteins from the legs were extracted using sodium deoxycholate, digitonin, dodecyl sodium sulfate (SDS) or Triton X-100. The protein concentration was found to be higher in the extract obtained using Triton X-100, which was applied to a WS

Methyl-CpG-binding (SmMBD2/3) and chromobox (SmCBX) proteins are required for neoblast proliferation and oviposition in the parasitic blood fluke Schistosoma mansoni.

While schistosomiasis remains a significant health problem in low to middle income countries, it also represents a recently recognised threat to more economically-developed regions. Until a vaccine is developed, this neglected infectious disease is primarily controlled by praziquantel, a drug with a currently unknown mechanism of action. By further elucidating how Schistosoma molecular components cooperate to regulate parasite developmental processes, next generation targets will be identified. Here, we continue our studies on schistosome epigenetic participants and characterise the function o

Shedding light on bioactivity of botanical by-products: neem cake compounds deter oviposition of the arbovirus vector Aedes albopictus (Diptera: Culicidae) in the field.

Industrial plant-borne by-products can be sources of low-cost chemicals, potentially useful to build eco-friendly control strategies against mosquitoes. Neem cake is a cheap by-product of neem oil extraction obtained by pressing the seeds of Azadirachta indica. Neem products are widely used as insecticides since rarely induce resistance because their multiple mode of action against insect pests and low-toxicity rates have been detected against vertebrates. In this research, we used field bioassays to assess the effective oviposition repellence of neem cake fractions of increasing polarity [n-h

Mortality and oviposition of western cherry fruit fly (Diptera: Tephritidae) exposed to different insecticide baits for varying periods in the presence and absence of food.

Spinosad bait is used to control western cherry fruit fly, Rhagoletis indifferens Curran (Diptera: Tephritidae), by killing flies before they oviposit. However, effects of different insecticide baits on management of reproductively mature flies are largely unknown. Objectives here were to determine mortality and oviposition of reproductively mature R. indifferens exposed to different insecticide baits for varying periods in the presence and absence of dried yeast extract and sucrose food. Spinosad bait (spinosad in a mix of protein, sugar, and other ingredients) was compared with acetamiprid,

Towards green oviposition deterrents? Effectiveness of Syzygium lanceolatum (Myrtaceae) essential oil against six mosquito vectors and impact on four aquatic biological control agents.

Essential oils (EOs) from plants may be alternative sources of molecules toxic against mosquito vectors of public health relevance. Most of researches in this field focused on EOs as larvicides or ovicides, while limited efforts focused on the exploitation of EOs as oviposition deterrents. In the present study, the larvicidal and oviposition deterrent activity of Syzygium lanceolatum leaf EO was evaluated against six mosquito species, Anopheles stephensi, An. subpictus, Aedes aegypti, Ae. albopictus, Culex quinquefasciatus, and Cx. tritaeniorhynchus. High efficacy of (Z)-γ-bisabolene from the essential oil of Galinsoga parviflora (Asteraceae) as larvicide and oviposition deterrent against six mosquito vectors.

The eco-friendly management of mosquitoes with novel and effective larvicides and oviposition deterrents is a crucial challenge to prevent outbreaks of mosquito-borne diseases. However, most of the herbal formulations tested in these years showed LC50 values higher of 40 ppm, and significant oviposition deterrent activity only when tested at relatively higher doses (> 50 μg/ml). Herein, we studied the chemical composition of the Galinsoga parviflora essential oil (EO). This plant is an annual herb native to South America naturalized all over the world. We tested the EO larvicidal and ovipositi

Rainfall-directed oviposition behavior of Culex nigripalpus (Diptera: Culicidae) and its influence on St. Louis encephalitis virus transmission in Indian River County, Florida.

Resting Culex nigripalpus Theobald were collected with a ground aspirator three times a week in Indian River County, Fla., from January 1985 through December 1987. The number of green (newly emerged), empty, blood-fed, and gravid females in each collection was counted; up to 100 empty females were dissected to estimate the abundance of empty, parous females in the population. In general, this species was uncommon during the dry season from January through June but increased during the wet season in July and remained abundant through early winter. During the wet season, green, parous, and gravi

Histological confinement of transglutaminase-mediated nit sheath crosslinking is essential for proper oviposition and egg coating in the human head louse, Pediculus humanus capitis.

Background Head louse females secrete liquid gel, which is mainly composed of the louse nit sheath protein 1 (LNSP1) and LNSP2, when they lay eggs. The gel is crosslinked by transglutaminase (TG) to form the nit sheath, which covers most part of egg except the top operculum area where breathing holes are located. Knowledge on the selective mechanism of nit sheath solidification to avoid uncontrolled crosslinking could lead to design a novel way of louse control, but no information is available yet. Methods To elucidate the crosslinking mechanisms of nit sheath gel inside the reproductive syste

Arginine vasotocin (AVT)/mesotocin (MT) receptors in chickens: Evidence for the possible involvement of AVT-AVPR1 signaling in the regulation of oviposition and pituitary prolactin expression.

Two structurally related peptides, arginine vasotocin (AVT) and mesotocin (MT), are reported to regulate many physiological processes, such as anti-diuresis and oviposition in birds, and their actions are likely mediated by four AVT/MT receptors (AVPR1A, AVPR1B, MTR and AVPR2b), which are orthologous/paralogous to human AVPR1A, AVPR1B, OXTR and AVPR2 respectively. However, our knowledge regarding the functions of these avian AVT/MT receptors has been limited. Here, we examined the functionality and expression of these receptors in chickens and investigated the roles of AVT in the anterior pitu
