Colon cancer stage at diagnosis strongly predicts survival, yet racial disparities remain underexplored for Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) subpopulations. In light of COVID-19 and rising anti-Asian hate, we examined temporal changes in colon cancer stage at diagnosis among disaggregated AANHPI populations before and during the pandemic. Using the National Cancer Database, we examined colon cancer stage at presentation (0-IV) among AANHPI subgroups in pre-pandemic (2004-2019) and pandemic (2020-2021) periods. Ordinal logistic regressions with race-year interactio

Several polygenic risk scores (PRSs) for type 2 diabetes (T2D) have been derived from genome-wide association studies (GWASs), but Pacific populations have generally not been represented in these GWASs. The aim of this study was to examine the association of PRS for T2D with diabetes and clinical measures in Pacific Islander populations from Guam and Saipan. We analyzed seven constructions of PRSs in 1990 participants in a GWAS from a community-based cross-sectional study of diabetes. Associations of T2D PRS with diabetes, maximum body mass index (BMI), fasting glucose, and HbA1c were examined

Background: Emerging research suggests online racial discrimination may be related to alcohol use and smoking, though more studies are needed to clarify the associations in diverse populations. Objectives: To explore the associations between online racism and hazardous drinking, smoking status, and co-use among Black, Asian American/Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander (AANHPI), and Multiracial "Generation Z" emerging adults. Methods: Emerging adults (2,801 Black American AANHPI and Multiracial; 49.3% female) were recruited via online quota-based sampling. BACKGROUND: Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander individuals have increased risks for episiotomy and severe perineal laceration during vaginal delivery. The Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander population in the US is diverse yet few studies disaggregate results within specific ethnicity populations.
OBJECTIVE: This study investigated the variability in risks for episiotomy and severe perineal laceration among 16 disaggregated Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander groups, compared to Non-Hispanic White nulliparous individuals, and assessed wha

According to prior research, Asian and Pacific Islander American (APIA) immigrants often refrain from seeking health care unless necessitated by medical conditions. Utilizing data from health screenings conducted in APIA immigrant enclaves in Los Angeles, we hypothesize that poorer obesity status would predict higher rates of regular physician access. Analyses involved objectively measured percent body fat (%BF) and survey responses collected between 2011 and 2019. We assessed the association between obesity status and regular physician access, adjusting for insurance status, demographic, and

BACKGROUND: Asian Americans and Native Hawaiians and other Pacific Islanders have suboptimal human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination and cancer screening rates. Asian Americans and NHPIs are often aggregated, masking disparities characterized by varying colonization and immigration patterns and cultural and religious beliefs between populations and ethnicities. We examined the incidence of HPV-associated cancers across disaggregated Asian American and NHPI ethnicities.
METHODS: Using the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results Detailed Asian/Pacific Islander database, we calculated 1990 to

OBJECTIVES: The Pacific Island region is estimated to have among the highest rates of childhood ear disease and hearing loss in the world. The adverse effects of childhood hearing loss include delayed speech/language development, learning difficulties, and reduced social-emotional well-being. Schoolteachers and early childhood educators are among the first professionals who may suspect hearing loss in their young students, and they are well-placed to initiate referrals to appropriate health services. Given the current efforts to implement Inclusive Education in the Pacific Islands, teachers ar

Substance use (SU) among adolescents is a critical public health concern that increases the risk for negative outcomes. Although Asian American (AA) adolescents tend to report low rates of SU, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander (NH/PI) adolescents often report significantly higher rates of use. Yet, NH/PI youth are seldom studied as a separate group. Consequently, little is known about the factors involved in SU among NH/PI adolescents and how to prevent it. This prospective study investigated the effect of ecological risk and protective factors at the individual, family, and school levels o

BACKGROUND: The authors examined subsite-specific and histology-specific esophageal and gastric carcinoma incidence patterns among the Asians/Pacific Islander (API) population in the United States and compared them with those among whites and blacks.
METHODS: Data on newly diagnosed esophageal and gastric carcinomas during 1996-2000 were obtained from 24 population-based central cancer registries, representing approximately 80% of the API population in the United States. Age-adjusted rates, using the 2000 United States standard population, and age-specific rates were computed by anatomic subs

BACKGROUND: Although Indigenous Australians, New Zealand Maori and Pacific Island people comprise an unduly high proportion of patients treated for end-stage renal disease (ESRD) in the two countries, no population-based age- and disease-specific rates have been published.
METHODS: From data provided to the Australia and New Zealand Dialysis and Transplant Registry (ANZDATA), truncated age- and sex-standardized incidence rates were calculated for treated ESRD due to all causes and by primary renal disease, in four broad age groups of Maori, Pacific Island people and all 'other' New Zealanders

PURPOSE. This study examines whether psychosocial perinatal care services developed through community partnerships and cultural deference with attention to individual women's health issues, had an assocaited impact on use of prenatal care, birth outcomes and perinatal care costs for the three participating Asian Pacific Islander American ethinc groups. METHODS. The use of prenatal care visits and birth outcomes for women in the Malama program were compared to those for women of the same etnic groups in the community prior to the introduction of the program. Data on program participants from 19

The human polyomavirus JC (JCV) causes the central nervous system demyelinating disease progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy. Previously, we showed that 40% of Caucasians in the United States excrete JCV in the urine as detected by PCR. We have now studied 68 Navaho from New Mexico, 25 Flathead from Montana, and 29 Chamorro from Guam. By using PCR amplification of a fragment of the VP1 gene, JCV DNA was detected in the urine of 45 (66%) Navaho, 14 (56%) Flathead, and 20 (69%) Chamorro. Genotyping of viral DNAs in these cohorts by cycle sequencing showed predominantly type 2 (Asian), rath

AIMS: To assess the prevalence of urinary incontinence in New Zealand women of European, Maori and Pacific Island descent aged 18 years and over.
METHODS: A questionnaire, designed to be self administered, was sent to a group of 1028 women selected at random from the electoral roll in central Wellington. Incontinence was defined as any involuntary loss of urine. If present, details were sought regarding the occurrence, type, and severity of the incontinence so that the prevalence and nature of the problem within ethnic groups could be determined.
RESULTS: The prevalence for Maori women (46.8

INTRODUCTION: Hospitals in the United States are increasingly working to advance maternal health (MH) equity. To succeed, these efforts must be community-driven, centering voices of those with experience of health inequities, suboptimal care, and the impacts of structural racism. However, robust hospital engagement with such guidance remains rare. We documented community-driven strategies for advancing MH equity.
METHODS: Using a community-based participatory research approach, we conducted longitudinal in-person strategy sessions with individuals from communities disproportionately burdened

BACKGROUND: Mental health and resilience change rapidly early in substance use disorder (SUD) treatment. However, these processes have not been characterized among Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander (NHPI) patients, despite disproportionate trauma exposure and treatment barriers. Examining how posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms, optimism, and quality of life satisfaction fluctuate during early treatment may help improve care. This study investigated within- and between-person associations among PTSD, optimism, and life satisfaction over the first month of treatment.

OBJECTIVES: Several studies reported more favorable cancer-specific mortality (CSM) in Asian Pacific Islanders (APIs) vs. Caucasians. We tested these findings across 11 primary cancers of all stages: cutaneous melanoma, bladder, breast, colorectal, gastric, kidney, liver, lung, nasopharyngeal, prostate, and uterine cancer.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Within the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results database (SEER 2000-2021), we identified APIs and Caucasians with one of the 11 primaries. Multivariable competing risks regression (CRR) models tested the effect of API race/ethnicity on cancer-s

BACKGROUND: Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander (NHPI) populations face significant disparities in cervical cancer prevention and treatment. This systematic review and meta-analysis examines cervical cancer prevention metrics, treatment disparities, and effective interventions among NHPI populations.
METHODS: Following PRISMA guidelines, we systematically searched PubMed, Scopus, and Embase for studies published between 2000 and 2024 that reported cervical cancer prevention metrics in NHPI populations. Eligible studies included quantitative and qualitative designs with NHPI-specific or disag
