Enhanced sucking engagement by preterm infants during intermittent gavage feedings.

Non-nutritive sucking (NNS) activities were recorded in preterm infants born at gestational age 32 weeks or less during nasogastric feedings. Six infants on intermittent nasogastric feeding schedules were tested with a pacifier in their mouth for three 5-minute periods (before, during, and after gavage feeding). Analysis of the recordings revealed that NNS activities increased markedly during the intermittent nasogastric feeding schedule. The overall proportions of sucking engagement, the mean duration of sucking burst, the mean number of sucks per burst, and the mean duration of individual su

Evidence Base for 2022 Updated Recommendations for a Safe Infant Sleeping Environment to Reduce the Risk of Sleep-Related Infant Deaths.

Every year in the United States, approximately 3500 infants die of sleep-related infant deaths, including sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) (International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems 10th Revision [ICD-10] R95), ill-defined deaths (ICD-10 R99), and accidental suffocation and strangulation in bed (ICD-10 W75). After a substantial decline in sleep-related deaths in the 1990s, the overall death rate attributable to sleep-related infant deaths have remained stagnant since 2000, and disparities persist. The triple risk model proposes that SIDS occurs when an

Breastfeeding or breast milk for procedural pain in neonates.

BACKGROUND: Physiological changes brought about by pain may contribute to the development of morbidity in neonates. Clinical studies have shown reduction in changes in physiological parameters and pain score measurements following pre-emptive analgesic administration in situations where the neonate is experiencing pain or stress. Non-pharmacological measures (such as holding, swaddling and breastfeeding) and pharmacological measures (such as acetaminophen, sucrose and opioids) have been used for this purpose. OBJECTIVES: The primary objective was to evaluate the effectiveness of breastfeeding

Yersinia Enterocolitica Sepsis in an Elderly Male With No Iron Overload: A Case Report From the Northeastern United States.

Yersinia enterocolitica (YE) is a facultative anaerobic gram-negative coccobacillus of the genus Yersinia (the most common ones are YE serogroups O:3; O:5,27; O:8; and O:9). Its incubation period is typically 1-14 days. The symptoms of YE infection include fever, abdominal pain (which may mimic appendicitis), and diarrhea (which may be bloody and can persist for several weeks). It is most commonly reported in infants and children due to cross-contamination of their feeds and pacifiers by people handling pork products, especially while cooking chitterlings. Necrotizing enterocolitis has been de

Self-inflicted gingival injury due to habitual fingernail scratching: a case report with a 1-year follow up.

Injuries to oral soft-tissues can occur due to accidental, iatrogenic, and factitious traumas. Traumatic lesions, whether chemical, physical, or thermal in nature, are among the most common in the mouth. A type of physical injury to the gingival tissues is self-inflicted. Sometimes the lesions are termed gingivitis artefacta. Self-inflicted gingival injuries in children and adolescents can occur as a result of accidental trauma, premeditated infliction, or chronic habits such as fingernail biting, digit sucking, or sucking on objects such as pens, pencils or pacifiers. The purpose of this case

Regulation of arsenate stress by nitric oxide and hydrogen sulfide in Oryza sativa seedlings: Implication of sulfur assimilation, glutathione biosynthesis, and the ascorbate-glutathione cycle and its genes.

Seed priming by nitric oxide (NO) and hydrogen sulphide (H2S) in combating against abiotic stress in plants is well documented. However, knowledge of fundamental mechanisms of their crosstalk is scrambled. Therefore, the reported study examined the probable role of NO and H2S in the mitigation of arsenate toxicity (As(V)) in rice seedlings and whether their potential signalling routes crossover. Results report that As(V) toxicity limited shoot and root length growth with more As accumulation in roots. As(V) further caused elevated reactive oxygen species levels, inhibited ascorbate-glutathione

Procedural Pain Management During Tenotomy for Congenital Talipes Equinovarus.

The majority of infants with congenital talipes equinovarus (CTEV) require tenotomy of the tendoachilles. The pain response of this procedure in the awake infant has not been previously reported. In this observational study, multimodal pain management strategies, including oral sucrose, oral paracetamol, topical anesthetic, local anesthetic, a pacifier (dummy), and swaddling, were used. Physiological responses and pain were recorded. Pain was rated out of 10 at regular intervals, using the Face, Legs, Activity, Cry, and Consolability (FLACC) scale. Ninety-one infants (65 men, mean age = 53 day

Infant Facial Expression Analysis: Towards a Real-Time Video Monitoring System Using R-CNN and HMM.

The manual monitoring of young infants suffering from diseases like reflux is significant, since infants can hardly articulate their feelings. In this work, we propose a video-based infant monitoring system for the analysis of infant expressions and states, approaching real-time performance. The expressions of interest consist of discomfort, unhappy, joy and neutral, whereas states include sleep, pacifier and open mouth. Benefiting from the expression analysis, the discomfort moments can also be used and correlated with a symptom-related disease, such as a reflux measurement for the diagnosis

Risk factors associated with reported bruxism among children and adolescents with Down Syndrome.

Objective: Identify factors associated with the prevalence of reported bruxism in children/adolescents with Down Syndrome (DS). Methods: The study included 112 children/adolescents with DS and their parents/caregivers. Oral habits, pacifier/finger sucking, upper respiratory infections (<six months), and breathing type (nasal/buccal) were diagnosed. Reported bruxism was recorded through parents' report ("Does your child have audible teeth grinding?"). Results: Children/adolescents 8-12 years of age were 1.15 times more likely to belong to the group with reported bruxism (1.42-3.14). Children/ad

Risk Factors, Protective Factors, and Current Recommendations to Reduce Sudden Infant Death Syndrome: A Review.

IMPORTANCE: Sudden infant death syndrome remains the leading cause of death in infants aged 1 month to 1 year in the United States. OBSERVATIONS: While its exact cause is unknown, sudden infant death syndrome is believed to be multifactorial, ie, occurs in infants with underlying biological vulnerability who experience an exogenous stressor, such as prone/side sleeping or soft bedding, during a critical developmental period. Much genetic and physiologic evidence points to impaired arousal responses to hypercarbia and hypoxia, which ultimately leads to asphyxia. Known risk factors for infants

The school of hard knocks: systemic violence and the motivation to harm in boys' youth academy football.

The 'beautiful game' of football may seem to be a curious artifact of study for this scholarly collection on violence. However, this article will highlight the need to explore the boys' English youth academy (YA) football industry as a manifestation of systemic violence and, ultimately, a reflection of the pseudo-pacified neoliberal economy. Embedding our theoretical analysis within emerging literature on harm and violence, this paper will illuminate the dark underbelly of boys' elite-level youth football in England, examining the culture and relationships between academy players, YAs as breed

The effect of hypertrophic adenoids and tonsils on the development of posterior crossbite and oral habits.

There are a number of studies in the literature, that associate nasopharyngeal airway obstruction, as a result of adenoid enlargement, to the development of skeletal and dental abnormalities. However, the etiologic role of hypertrophied adenoids and tonsils in developing an aberrant dentofacial growth is not clear, yet. The present investigation attempted to study the incidence of maxillary posterior crossbite and oral habits, in a sample of 120 children, that displayed hypertrophied adenoids with or without enlarged tonsils, and underwent adenoidectomy. An attempt was also made to relate the
