Raman identification of yellow synthetic organic pigments in modern and contemporary paintings: reference spectra and case studies.

The characterization of the binding media and pigments in modern and contemporary paintings is important for designing safe conservation treatments, as well as for determining suitable environmental conditions for display, storage and transport. Raman spectroscopy is a suitable technique for the in situ non-destructive identification of synthetic organic pigments in the presence of the complex binding media characteristic of synthetic resin paints or colour lithographic inks. The precise identification of a pigment by comparing its spectrum to that of a reference is necessary when conservation

Vaginal scrub-and-paint versus paint-only preparation in total laparoscopic hysterectomy: surgical site infection and postoperative spotting outcomes in a randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: No consensus exists regarding optimal vaginal preparation techniques for preventing surgical site infections (SSIs) in laparoscopic hysterectomy. This study aimed to compare SSI incidence between vaginal scrub-and-paint and paint-only preparation methods. METHODS: Assessor-blinded randomised controlled trial in a tertiary care hospital in Thailand. Eligible patients scheduled to undergo total laparoscopic hysterectomy, without immunocompromised status, intraoperative injury to adjacent organs, or contraindication to chlorhexidine gluconate. Participants who provided informed conse

Identification of the neural correlates of cyclothymic temperament using an esthetic judgment for paintings task in fMRI.

BACKGROUND: There is a well-known association between artistic creativity and cyclothymic temperament but the neural correlates of cyclothymic temperament have not yet been fully identified. Recently, we showed that the left lingual gyrus and bilateral cuneus may be associated with esthetic judgment of representational paintings, we therefore sought to investigate brain activity during esthetic judgment of paintings in relation to measures of cyclothymic temperament. METHODS: Regions of interest (ROI) were set at the left lingual gyrus and bilateral cuneus using automated anatomical labeling,

Reduction of pollutants in painting operation and suggestion of an optimal technique for extracting titanium dioxide from paint sludge in car manufacturing industries--case study (SAIPA).

Paint sludge of car manufacturing industries are not disposed in landfills, since they contain hazardous materials with a high concentration of chromium, aluminum, titanium, barium, copper, Iron, magnesium, strontium, and so on. Thus, it is essential to find solutions in order to neutralize them or suggest cost-effective techniques, which are also environmentally acceptable. Because, this sludge contains considerable amounts of Ti pigments and unbaked resins, recycling these pigments--which could be used in a variety of industries such as paint factories--is an appropriate subject for further

Respiratory Toxicity of Aged Paint Particles on a Building Exterior Wall.

Architectural exterior paints play a crucial role in protecting building materials from aging and corrosion. We obtained pieces that fell from the exterior of a university building and ground them using a miller. Aged paint particles (APPs) contained a high concentration of titanium and showed C-H bonds, indicating the presence of microplastics. APP had negatively charged surfaces and were agglomerated in the vehicles used in this study. When exposed repeatedly to APP via pharyngeal aspiration for 13 weeks, a decrease in platelet count and an increase in total cholesterol level were observed i

Spectroscopic DNA-PAINT for simultaneous multiplexed super-resolution microscopy.

Simultaneous multiplexed super-resolution imaging remains a central challenge in single-molecule localization microscopy (SMLM), due to the limited number of spectrally distinguishable fluorophores and the trade-off between spatial and spectral precision. Here, we introduce spectroscopic DNA-PAINT (sDNA-PAINT), a framework that integrates DNA-PAINT with spectroscopic SMLM (sSMLM) to enable simultaneous multiplexed imaging with high spatial and spectral fidelity. Using DNA Origami Nanorulers, in vitro and fixed-cell imaging, we show that sDNA-PAINT conditions significantly improve spectral prec

Accelerated Left-Handed DNA-PAINT Using Fluorogenic Probes.

Single-molecule localization microscopy (SMLM) techniques offer nanometer-scale resolution by stochastically localizing individual fluorescent molecules. Among these, DNA-mediated point accumulation for imaging in nanoscale topography (DNA-PAINT) stands out for its high multiplexing capability and excellent localization accuracy. In this work, we introduce a fast method using left-handed DNA (L-DNA) probes that show a lower background in DNA-PAINT experiments. The use of L-DNA reduces the background originating from unspecific imager and antibody binding. When fluorogenic probes are employed,

Improving Spatial Transcriptomics with Dual-Color Coding and Cell Painting.

Spatial transcriptomics has advanced our ability to study gene expression within the spatial context of tissues and single cells. Among the diverse methodologies available, in situ transcript detection offers subcellular spatial resolution by preserving the precise coordinates of RNA molecules. A widely used approach involves padlock probe (PLP) technology, which enables rolling circle amplification and fluorescent detection of individual transcripts. To address the limitations of conventional in situ methods in multiplexing, we recently developed the Combinatorial Dual-Color (CoDuCo) assay, e

Phalloidin-PAINT: Enhanced quantitative nanoscale imaging of F-actin.

We present phalloidin-based points accumulation for imaging in nanoscale topography (phalloidin-PAINT), enabling quantitative superresolution imaging of filamentous actin (F-actin) in the cell body and delicate membrane protrusions. We demonstrate that the intrinsic phalloidin dissociation enables PAINT superresolution microscopy in an imaging buffer containing low concentrations of dye-conjugated phalloidin. We further show enhanced single-molecule labeling by chemically promoting phalloidin dissociation. Two benefits of phalloidin-PAINT are its ability to consistently quantify F-actin at the

Biofouling inhibition by Staphylococcus aureus extracts and their potential use for paints.

For the control of biofouling, some paints based on compounds that are toxic to marine organisms have been used. There is an intensive search for biodegradable solutions that are friendly to non-target organisms. Bacteria have been shown to be a source of compounds with antifouling potential. In this work, the antifouling activity of a strain of Staphylococcus aureus was evaluated. Extracts activity against biofilm-forming bacteria and the toxicity against Artemia franciscana were evaluated. The extracts were incorporated in a hard gel and a paint matrix, and they were exposed to the sea. In b

Semantic Segmentation of Cell Painted Organelles using DeepLabv3plus Model.

Cell painting based high content fluorescence imaging technique offers deep insight into the functional and biological changes in subcellular structures. However, advanced instrumentation and the limited availability of suitable fluorescent dyes restricts the tool to comprehensively characterize the cell morphology. Therefore, generating fluorescent specific organelle images using transmitted light microscopy provides an alternative solution for clinical applications. In this work, the utility of semantic segmentation deep network for predicting the Endoplasmic Reticulum (ER), cytoplasm and nu

A review of the mechanisms of by-product PCB formation in pigments, dyes and paints.

There has been an increased awareness of paints and pigments as a source of by-product PCBs in the environment. The majority of existing work has focused only on reporting the presence of the main PCBs in different products with a specific focus on the most PCB congeners, PCB11 and PCB209. This gives the impression that only a handful of PCBs are found in paints. However, this is not the case. PCB profiles in paints and pigments can be just as complex as commercial technical mixtures. This review identified the presence of 149 different PCBs in paint samples. For reference, only 141 different

Magnetic shielding paints an accurate and easy-to-visualize portrait of aromaticity.

Chemists are trained to recognize aromaticity semi-intuitively, using pictures of resonance structures and Frost-Musulin diagrams, or simple electron-counting rules such as Hückel's 4n + 2/4n rule. To quantify aromaticity one can use various aromaticity indices, each of which is a number reflecting some experimentally measured or calculated molecular property, or some feature of the molecular wavefunction, which often has no visual interpretation or may not have direct chemical relevance. We show that computed isotropic magnetic shielding isosurfaces and contour plots provide a feature-rich pi

Sustainable treatment of paint industry wastewater: Current techniques and challenges.

Paint manufacturing industries produce wastewater containing high chemical oxygen demand and turbidity, besides organic matter, suspended solids, and heavy metals that cause enormous environmental damages. Safely treating this wastewater before being disposed to the natural water sources is essential for attaining the UN SDGs, particularly Goal 14: Life under water. Besides being efficient, wastewater treatment techniques must be sustainable - environmentally, economically, and ethically. While a few papers have reviewed specific treatment methods for certain pollutants, such as heavy metals,

The impact of photocatalytic paint porosity on indoor NOx and HONO levels.

Photocatalytic materials are a potentially effective remediation technology for indoor air purification. In this paper, we assess the impact of photocatalytic paint porosity on the indoor levels of nitrogen oxides (NOx) and nitrous acid (HONO). We observed that the porosity of photocatalytic paints plays a paramount role in the NO2 removal. The increase of pigment volume concentration (PVC), i.e. porosity, from PVC 53% to PVC 80% leads to an increase of the geometric NO2 uptake coefficient from (3.3 ± 0.5) × 10-6 to (3.2 ± 0.1) × 10-4. At the same time, a high quantity of HONO formed by NO2 co

Persistent hypoglycemia associated with lipid storage myopathy in a paint foal.

A 12-hours-old Paint filly was examined because of weakness and dull mentation after birth. Despite IV administered dextrose, the foal remained persistently hypoglycemic with increase in serum activity of muscle and liver enzymes. A postmortem diagnosis of lipid myopathy most similar to multiple acyl-CoA dehydrogenase deficiency (MADD) was confirmed by findings of myofiber lipid accumulation, elevated urine organic acids, and serum free acylcarnitines with respect to control foals. This report details a case of equine neonatal lipid storage myopathy with many biochemical characteristics of MAD

Photo-Induced Depletion of Binding Sites in DNA-PAINT Microscopy.

The limited photon budget of fluorescent dyes is the main limitation for localization precision in localization-based super-resolution microscopy. Points accumulation for imaging in nanoscale topography (PAINT)-based techniques use the reversible binding of fluorophores and can sample a single binding site multiple times, thus elegantly circumventing the photon budget limitation. With DNA-based PAINT (DNA-PAINT), resolutions down to a few nanometers have been reached on DNA-origami nanostructures. However, for long acquisition times, we find a photo-induced depletion of binding sites in DNA-PA
