From cutting to casting: impact and initial barriers to the Ponseti method of clubfoot treatment in China.

In 2005, a nationwide clubfoot treatment program focused on the Ponseti method -an effective, affordable and minimally-invasive method- was initiated in China. The purpose of this study was to evaluate and identify barriers to the program. A qualitative study (rapid ethnographic study) was conducted using semi-structured interviews of 44 physicians who attended four of the 10 Ponseti training workshops, focus groups with parents of children with clubfoot, and observation. Several barriers to the Ponseti method are quite unique due to China's size, socio-economics, culture, politics, and health

Seeking an effective strategy for promoting breast self-examination among women.

Breast self-examination (BSE) may be effective in the early detection of breast cancer, but women must be aware of both the benefit of the procedure and the need for regular practice. The purpose of this study was to ascertain the effects of modeling plus rehearsal with respect to knowledge, attitudes, and subsequent frequency of BSE among women. The sample for this study consisted of 292 college students randomly assigned to one of two groups and exposed to: a facilitator-conducted program using modeling plus rehearsal (treatment group); or pamphlets addressing breast cancer and BSE (comparis

Rocky Mountain spotted fever (tick-borne typhus) in South Carolina: an educational program and tick/rickettsial survey in 1973 and 1974.

Because the incidence of spotted fever is increasing in South Carolina, campaigns were carried out in 1973 and 1974 to provide the public and medical practitioners, through pamphlets and news media, with information about spotted fever and the ticks which transmit the causative agent, Rickettsia rickettsii. People were also invited to save and submit live ticks removed from vegetation, animals and humans, for examination by the hemolymph test. A total of 1,186 ticks consisting of 987 Dermacentor variabilis, 103 Rhipicephalus sanguineus, and 96 Amblyomma americanum were examined. Rickettsiae id

Women's responses to information on mammographic breast density.

The objective of this study was to determine the negative and positive outcomes of providing mammographic breast density (MBD) information to participants of a screening program. A randomized experiment was conducted with a sample of 618 women 50 years or older with MBD greater than 50% of breast volume. The intervention consisted of reporting the presence of MBD in the screening mammography results letter that was sent along with an information pamphlet. Compared to the controls, more women in the intervention group described the term breast density correctly and recognized it as a risk facto

Adapting and Evaluating a Brief Advice Tobacco Cessation Intervention in High-reach, Low-resource Settings in India: Protocol for a Cluster Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: About 1.35 million deaths annually are attributed to tobacco use in India. The main challenge, given the magnitude of tobacco use and limited resources, is delivering cessation support at scale, low cost, and through a coordinated cross-system effort; one such example being brief advice interventions. However, highly credentialed staff to identify and counsel tobacco users are scarce. Task-shifting is an important opportunity for scaling these interventions. OBJECTIVE: The LifeFirst SWASTH (Supporting Wellbeing among Adults by Stopping Tobacco Habit) program-adapted from the LifeF

[José Ignacio Bartolache y Díaz de Posada: his contributions to medicine].

During 18th century in New Spain, the strong link between religion and science hindered scientific growth. Conservatism and scholasticism pervaded educational institutions. Within this restricted context, a scientific community conformed mainly by creoles fulfilled their desire and need to know more as they had access to European books, which allowed erudite leading figures, such as Dr. José Ignacio Bartolache y Díaz de Posada, propel innovative ideas in medicine and pharmacy. Dr. Bartolache was considered sacrilegious and scandalous by the ecclesiastical authorities of that epoch. He favored

Preferences for Communicating about Breast Cancer Screening Among Racially/Ethnically Diverse Older Women.

Differences exist across breast cancer screening guidelines regarding frequency of screening and age of discontinuation for older women (≥70 years) at average risk for breast cancer. These differences highlight concerns about the benefits and harms of screening, and may negatively impact older women's ability to make informed screening decisions. This study examined preferences for communicating about screening mammography among racially/ethnically diverse, older women. In-depth interviews were conducted with 59 women with no breast cancer history. Non-proportional quota sampling ensured rough

Oral cancer educational materials for the general public: 1998.

OBJECTIVES: Previous studies have shown that US adults are not well informed about oral cancers and only 15 percent ever have had an oral cancer examination. This study sought to determine the quantity and adequacy of educational materials designed to inform or educate US adults about risks for, and signs and symptoms of, oral cancer and the need for an oral cancer examination. METHODS: Letters requesting copies of oral cancer educational materials produced by the organization or agency--leaflets, fact sheets, pamphlets, videos, posters--were sent to 172 national and state organizations or ag

Community-based breast cancer intervention program for older African American women in beauty salons.

African American women are at high risk for morbidity and mortality from breast cancer. African American women ages 50 and older have been a difficult group to reach through conventional breast cancer intervention programs. Cultural and health beliefs that differ from mainstream society are reported to be factors contributing to the low rates of breast screening among this group. In addition to these attitudinal factors, older African American women are disproportionately represented among uninsured and under-insured Americans. As a result, cost becomes a barrier to mammography screening for m

Optimizing implementation of an evidence-based self-help intervention program for people living with HIV (PLWH) with depressive symptoms in Botswana.

An evidence-based self-help program in booklet format has been developed to reduce depressive symptoms among people living with HIV (PLWH) in Botswana. Its effectiveness was evaluated in a Randomized Controlled Trial (RCT), with a sample of 72 PLWH. The program was shown to be effective in reducing depressive symptoms (d = 0.76). Good implementation is an important step. This paper aims to present an evidence-based implementation strategy for the booklet self-help intervention. A reflexive methodology was adopted. An implementation model based on the stepwise approach of Versluis et al. ([2020

Enhancing attitudes and intentions in prospective blood donors: evaluation of a new donor recruitment brochure.

BACKGROUND: Although little empiric evidence has been published concerning the efficacy of blood donor recruitment materials, research suggests that simple attempts to enhance knowledge may not be sufficient to motivate donation. In contrast, recent donor motivation studies highlight the importance of anxiety, attitudes, and perceived ability to cope with donation (i.e., self-efficacy) as crucial determinants of donation intention. Therefore, recruitment materials that specifically address these constructs have the potential to outperform traditional educational brochures. STUDY DESIGN AND ME

Does a booklet on breast self-examination improve subsequent detection rates?

Of 28 788 women aged 40 to 74 registered at 28 university teaching practices in greater Belfast, half were randomly selected to receive a booklet on breast self-examination from their general practitioner at the start of the study and 1 year later. The frequency of breast abnormalities was identical in both groups (0.83%) during the 2-year follow-up. Early malignant breast cancers (stages TX, TO, Tla) were significantly more frequent in the intervention group (53.6%) than in the control group (24.3%). Among women in the intervention group with malignant lesions, 2 sites, left nipple and left i

The Pewterer and the Chymist: Major Erasmus Purling and his Refined Tin.

This article examines the career of Erasmus Purling, an English engineer who wrote a short alchemical treatise in 1657. After serving the Royalist cause in the late 1640s, he joined the Commonwealth forces in the early 1650s. He then attempted to manufacture and market a tin alloy supposedly resembling silver, first in England, where he was opposed by the London pewterers and imprisoned. In 1657, he was granted a monopoly privilege from the French Crown for his invention, which he promoted in his alchemical pamphlet. This publication, as well the other works he used to promote his discoveries,

Reflecting on knowledge translation strategies from global health research projects in Tunisia and the Republic of Côte d'Ivoire.

OBJECTIVES: We describe the knowledge translation strategies in two projects and share lessons learned about knowledge sharing and uptake. METHODS: To generate findings for dissemination: (1) the Republic of Côte d'Ivoire (RCI) project relied on a multiple case study design to document barriers and facilitators to implementing a community-led prevention strategy targeting Ebola virus disease; and (2) the Tunisia project used several designs to assess a mental health training's effectiveness, and a case study design to explore contextual factors that may influence anticipated outcomes. [Home chemotherapy experience of an elderly male gastric cancer patient].

This article presents the author's experience providing nursing care to an unaccompanied elderly male patient with gastric cancer who was undergoing initial home chemotherapy. Nursing care problems identified included "anticipation anxiety", "inability to care properly for wound", and "deficits in knowledge and skills necessary for successful home chemotherapy." A therapeutic relationship between the author and patient was established during home chemotherapy from December 6, 2006 to January 31, 2007. Health education and nursing interventions were provided through pamphlet-based and verbal in

Self-care instructions: do patients understand educational materials?

As health care providers we are not in a position to teach reading. We do, however, have a legal and an ethical obligation to provide patients with self-care instructions they can understand. Because the methods presented for enhancing patient understanding of self-care instructions are relatively new, and because nurses are just beginning to be aware of the need for such interventions, it will be a while before the ideal situation exists. Ideally, each pamphlet or set of instructions would be coded with the reading grade level needed to understand it and each patient's reading level would be

Reducing the socioeconomic gradient in uptake of the NHS bowel cancer screening Programme using a simplified supplementary information leaflet: a cluster-randomised trial.

BACKGROUND: Uptake of colorectal cancer screening is low in the English NHS Bowel Cancer Screening Programme (BCSP). Participation in screening is strongly associated with socioeconomic status. The aim of this study was to determine whether a supplementary leaflet providing the 'gist' of guaiac-based Faecal Occult Blood test (gFOBt) screening for colorectal cancer could reduce the socioeconomic status (SES) gradient in uptake in the English NHS BCSP. METHODS: The trial was integrated within routine BCSP operations in November 2012. Using a cluster randomised controlled design all adults aged
