Microbiological Safety of Ornamental Edible Flowers.

The present work focuses on the microbial characterisation of edible flowers intended solely for aesthetic purposes. This market segment is especially critical. In fact, due to the limited resilience to mechanical shocks, edible flowers are rather difficult to wash. All analysed samples exhibited substantial microbial loads, dominated by Enterobacteriaceae, Pseudomonadaceae, coliforms, yeasts, and moulds. Refrigerated storage (5 days at 4 °C) resulted in a marked and consistent increase in microbial populations, as confirmed by multivariate analysis, which identified storage as the primary dri

Migration of fungicides, antibiotics and resistome in the soil-lettuce system.

The emergence and spread of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) have become a serious issue in global agricultural production. However, understanding how these ARGs spread across different spatial scales, especially when exposed to both pesticides and antibiotics, has remained a challenge. Here, metagenomic assembly and binning methodologies were used to determine the spread pathway of ARGs in the soil-lettuce system under individual and combined exposure of fungicides (carbendazim and pyraclostrobin) and antibiotics (chlortetracycline and ciprofloxacin). These agrochemicals not only facilitate

Biocontrol Potential of Endophytic Plant-Growth-Promoting Bacteria against Phytopathogenic Viruses: Molecular Interaction with the Host Plant and Comparison with Chitosan.

Endophytic plant-growth-promoting bacteria (ePGPB) are interesting tools for pest management strategies. However, the molecular interactions underlying specific biocontrol effects, particularly against phytopathogenic viruses, remain unexplored. Herein, we investigated the antiviral effects and triggers of induced systemic resistance mediated by four ePGPB (Paraburkholderia fungorum strain R8, Paenibacillus pasadenensis strain R16, Pantoea agglomerans strain 255-7, and Pseudomonas syringae strain 260-02) against four viruses (Cymbidium Ring Spot Virus-CymRSV; Cucumber Mosaic Virus-CMV; Potato

Identification of bacteria in the tracheal swabs of farmed ostriches and their effect on the viability of influenza A virus.

Avian influenza surveillance is a requirement for commercial trade in ostrich products, but influenza A viruses (IAVs) have proven difficult to isolate from ostrich tracheal swabs that test positive using molecular methods. We hypothesized that microbes unique to the ostrich trachea propagate in the transport medium after sampling and affect viral viability. We cultured tracheal swabs from 50 ostriches on 4 farms in South Africa, and recovered and identified 13 bacterial, 1 yeast, and 2 fungal species. Dietzia sp. had not been identified previously in the oropharyngeal tract of a bird, to our

Pyrethroid exposure alters internal and cuticle surface bacterial communities in Anopheles albimanus.

A deeper understanding of the mechanisms underlying insecticide resistance is needed to mitigate its threat to malaria vector control. Following previously identified associations between mosquito microbiota and insecticide resistance, we demonstrate for the first time, the effects of pyrethroid exposure on the microbiota of F1 progeny of field-collected Anopheles albimanus. Larval and adult mosquitoes were exposed to the pyrethroids alphacypermethrin (only adults), permethrin, and deltamethrin. While there were no significant differences in bacterial composition between insecticide-resistant

Anti-Candida and anti-Cryptococcus antifungal produced by marine microorganisms.

In order to search for antifungal from biological origin, we performed a screening of marine microorganisms isolated from seawater, seaweed, sediment and marine invertebrates collected from different coastal areas of the Moroccan Atlantic Ocean. The antifungal activities of these isolates were investigated against the pathogenic yeasts involved in medical mycology. Whole cultures of 34 marine microorganisms were screened for antifungal activities using the method of agar diffusion against four yeasts. The results showed that among the 34 isolates studied, 13 (38%) strains have antifungal activ

Sheep and rapeseed cake manure promote antibiotic resistome in agricultural soil.

The application of manure in agriculture caused the emergence and spread of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARB) in soil environments. However, the co-occurrence pattern and host diversity of ARGs and MGEs in soils amended with animal and green manures remains unclear. In this study, metagenomic assembly and binning techniques were employed to comprehensively explore the effects of sheep manure and green manure on soil microbiome, antibiotic resistomes, and ARG hosts. Both rapeseed cake manure and sheep manure increased the abundance and diversity of ARGs,

The role of dupilumab in skin microbiome shifts in the Netherton genodermatosis: a case report and review of literature.

Skin dysbiosis plays a crucial role in inflammatory skin diseases, particularly in genodermatoses such as Netherton syndrome (NS). This case report aimed to investigate changes in the skin microbiome of a patient with Netherton syndrome before and during dupilumab therapy, with the goal of expanding the limited evidence currently available on this topic. We report the case of a 35-year-old woman diagnosed with NS at birth, who, prior to dupilumab therapy, presented with atopic dermatitis (AD), ichthyosis linearis circumflexa, and severe pruritus. Dupilumab therapy was initiated, and skin swabs

Culturable microbiota of reared mosquito fauna in Osogbo, Nigeria and their potential biological roles: a molecular insight.

OBJECTIVE: Mosquitoes are vectors of deadly, life-threatening diseases worldwide. There is limited information on the interactions between microbes and local mosquito fauna in the Nigerian ecotype and Osun State. This study employed molecular techniques to characterize microorganisms isolated from the internal tissues of adult mosquitoes reared from larvae and pupae collected from various breeding sites in the Osogbo metropolis, Nigeria. Bacteria and yeasts were isolated from immobilized, surface-sterilized, and homogenized mosquitoes. Molecular identification of microbes was based on the Poly

Natural variation in IBF1 confers antimicrobial activity through altered flavonoid accumulation in rice hulls.

Secondary metabolites perform diverse physiological functions, and studies have identified genes and mechanisms underlying their biosynthesis. However, the genetic basis of intraspecific variation in secondary metabolism remains poorly understood, particularly in less-studied tissues such as rice hulls. In this study, we identified variants in the F-box protein IBF1 that underlie genotypic differences in hull color and flavonoid accumulation using positional cloning. While IR64 (straw-white hull) harbors the functional IBF1, DJ123 (pigmented hull) harbors frame-shift mutations that result in t

Polymicrobial Arthritis Following a Domestic Cat Bite Involving Rahnella aquatilis in an Immunocompetent Patient.

Cat bites frequently lead to polymicrobial infections due to deep puncture wounds that inoculate oral flora into poorly oxygenated tissues. While Pasteurella multocida is the most commonly implicated organism, environmental and atypical pathogens may also play a role, yet often go unrecognized. This article reports a rare case of polymicrobial septic arthritis caused by a domestic cat bite in an immunocompetent adult, with isolation of Rahnella aquatilis, a freshwater-associated Enterobacterales species not previously reported in this context. A 33-year-old immunocompetent male presented with

Geographic differentiation of the gut microbiota in Lissorhoptrus oryzophilus (Coleoptera: Curculionidae): associations with environmental gradients and predicted functional potential.

The rice water weevil, Lissorhoptrus oryzophilus (Kuschel), is a major invasive pest native to rice that has expanded far beyond its native North American range to establish widespread populations across Asia and Europe. However, how altitudinal gradients shape this microbial ecosystem remains unclear. We performed shotgun metagenomics to profile the gut microbiota of 3 geographically distinct populations-Pingba District (PB), Yibin City (SC), and Mudanjiang (MDJ) City-of L. oryzophilus across elevational gradients in China. Though low-abundance archaeal, fungal, and viral sequences were detec

Exploring the Development of Wild Microbiomes in the Eastern Fence Lizard.

This study examines the gut microbiome from faecal samples of a reptilian model (Sceloporus undulatus). The dynamic host-symbiote interactions between gut microbiota are essential in metabolic processes and overall health of the host organism. We used 16S rRNA gene sequencing to profile the bacterial community from the guts of wild Eastern Fence Lizards. Microbiome profiles were collected at four distinct time points when lizards were actively foraging in the environment and across four age groups, aiming to characterise the natural variation in bacterial diversity. Environmental bacteria such

Microbial Succession, Functional Dynamics, and Their Relationship with Quality Formation During Ripened Pu-Erh Tea Fermentation.

Microorganisms are the core drivers of ripened Pu-erh tea (RpPT) quality formation. However, the mechanisms of the microbiological and flavor chemical changes during the fermentation process remain unclear, which limits the quality control of ripened Pu-erh tea fermentation. A physicochemical analysis revealed that fermentation significantly reduced the contents of water extracts, tea polyphenols, free amino acids, soluble sugars, and most catechins (p < 0.05), while flavonoids and tea pigments were significantly accumulated. Amplicon sequencing revealed that Pantoea and Bacillus were the domi

Hidden palette: culturing the sauropsid gut microbiome reveals a high prevalence and diversity of bacteria that undergo carotenoid biosynthesis.

Pigments play essential roles in communication, physiology, and ecological adaptation in taxa across the tree of life and are especially important for animals, where carotenoid pigments contribute to diverse functions including coloration, antioxidant defense, and immune function. One potentially important yet largely overlooked source of carotenoids is host-associated microbes. Microbially derived carotenoids may influence host phenotype and physiology, but the extent to which they occur or vary across hosts remains largely unknown. To begin to address this gap, we isolated gut-associated bac

Functional characterization and molecular fingerprinting of potential phosphate solubilizing bacterial candidates from Shisham rhizosphere.

Phosphate solubilizing bacteria (PSB) are important role players in plant growth promotion. In the present study, we aimed to screen the functionally active phosphate solubilizing bacteria (PSB) associated with Dalbergia sissoo Roxb. (Shisham) from different provenances. Screening for phosphate solubilization was done on Pikovskaya's agar, and 18 bacteria positive for the tri-calcium phosphate (Ca3(PO4)2 solubilization showing visible dissolution halo zones were identified. All 18 isolates showed zinc solubilization, indole acetic acid (IAA), siderophore, and hydrogen cyanide (HCN) production.

Tracking the Sources of Antibiotic Resistance Genes in an Urban Stream during Wet Weather using Shotgun Metagenomic Analyses.

Stormwater runoff has been known to cause increases in bacterial loadings in urban streams. However, little is known about its impacts on antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in urban watersheds. This study was performed to characterize the ARG composition of various environmental compartments of an urban watershed and to quantify their contributions of microbes and ARGs to an urban stream under wet weather conditions. Shotgun metagenomic results showed that the ARG abundance in wet weather flow was significantly higher than in base flow. Multidrug resistance genes were the most common ARG type
