A rare case: Endobronchial solitary mixed papilloma.

Endobronchial solitary papillomas are extremely rare lung neoplasms originating from the bronchial surface epithelium. They often present with cough or recurrent hemoptysis. These tumors are benign, but they should be followed closely because they may even have a low probability of malignant transformation features. It should be kept in mind that malignancy may develop especially if the patient is a smoker. Although the etiology is not known for certain, it is thought to be caused by human papillomavirus in some cases. A 43-year-old male patient was admitted with a complaint of chronic cough.

Primary Inverted Papilloma of the Middle Ear.

Primary middle ear inverted papilloma is an exceedingly rare finding posing a diagnostic challenge, as symptomatology often mimics common clinical entities like serous otitis media. Clinical and radiological findings are not specific, whilst high recurrence rates, local destruction, and potential malignant transformation constitute an overall demanding surgical challenge, requiring aggressive procedures. We report the case of a primary inverted papilloma of the middle ear, discussing diagnostic and therapeutic issues.

Nasal Papilloma due to HPV 11 infection.

Human papillomaviruses cause almost all cervical carcinomas, but HPV infections have recently been established as a major etiologic factor for a subset of cancers arising from the oropharinx, including the base of tongue, tonsil, and other parts of the pharinx. Certain types of HPV are considered carcinogenic in humans: HPV 16 and HPV 18 are the most carcinogenic types; HPV 31, 33, 35,39,45,51,52,56,59,66 and 68 also are included in the group of carcinogenic HPV types (1,2,3,4,5). HPV 6 and 11 are associated with genital warts and papillomas are not believed to be carcinogenic (6). The aim of

[Chronic papulosquamous lesion: papilloma should be suspected].

Papilloma is a benign tumor of the malpighian layer, usualy affecting the skin. Thickened epithelium doesn't show cytological or architectural abnormalities; the epithelial proliferation is still clearly separated from the dermis by the basal membrane, that is to say absence of tumor infiltration. We here report the case of a 15-year-old boy presenting with oozing plague in his left elbow that had evolved over the previous two months. The patient had no particular previous history. Physical examination showed good general condition and a papular, squamous, itchy, oozing lesion measuring 4 cm a

Microbiological diagnosis of human papilloma virus infection.

Infection with human papillomavirus (HPV) is the leading cause of sexually transmitted infection worldwide. This virus generally causes benign lesions, such as genital warts, but persistent infection may lead to cervical cancer, anal cancer, vaginal cancer, and oropharyngeal cancer, although less frequently. Cervical cancer is a severe disease with a high mortality in some countries. Screening with cytology has been very successful in the last few years, but nowadays there are numerous studies that confirm that cytology should be replaced with the detection of HPV as a first line test in popul

Surgical management of maxillary sinonasal inverted papilloma.

OBJECTIVE: The extent of the surgery required when sinonasal inverted papilloma (IP) originates in the maxillary sinus is still the subject of debate. The principal aim of the study was to evaluate the efficacy of exclusive endoscopic removal or when combined with a limited vestibular anterior antrostomy of the maxillary IP. METHODS: A retrospective analysis was carried out of 64 patients with IP treated in our university tertiary referral center from 1993-2007. Endoscopic removal of the IP was done for all patients, either exclusively or combined with an open approach. All patients were foll

[Diagnosis and treatment of human papilloma virus].

The identification and treatment of human papillomavirus (HPV) infections and HPV-associated neoplasm are complex. Difficulties in diagnosis and treatment of HPV-associated diseases arise from inabilities to detect HPV efficiently, the lack of specific antiviral drugs active against HPV and the high rates of recurrence and persistence of HPV infections after treatment. We present a review of therapies for HPV infections.

A solitary bronchial papilloma with malignant changes.

We describe a case of solitary papilloma of the bronchus and provide a review of 38 similar cases reported in Japan. A 70-year-old man complained of cough and sputum. Chest X-rays and CT scans revealed atelectasis of the right middle lobe. On bronchoscopy, a polypoid tumor was found at the orifice of the bronchus of the right middle lobe. The tumor was histologically diagnosed as a squamous papilloma with moderate atypia. Because of elevated tumor markers and the reported high incidence of malignant changes in papillomas, the tumor was endoscopically resected by electrosurgical snare. While th

Observer agreement about laryngoscopic assessment of papilloma.

BACKGROUND: Observer bias may confound the assessment of therapies utilized for recurrent respiratory papilloma, a recidivistic fluctuating disease. Any convincing change in a patient's disease must exceed the imprecision of the measuring system. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Videotapes of ten children, who had airway endoscopy for care of laryngeal papilloma, were edited. The videotapes were independently reviewed by six otolaryngologists, of whom five repeated their assessments 5 to 20 weeks later. The 'reference standard' was the operating surgeon's categorization of his patient's videotape. Agre

Human papilloma virus infection of the vulva.

The relationship between human papilloma virus (HPV) and cervical cancer is in the process of being defined. This potential opportunity to understand a human oncogenic virus has drawn significant attention to HPV. While cervical cancer is a potentially fatal outcome of HPV infection, genital warts are the most common manifestation of genital HPV infection. In addition to knowledge of etiology, natural history, and therapeutic options, patients and providers need to consider emotional impact to successfully manage the care of patients with this common infection. This article summarizes current

Human papilloma viruses in the human hypopharynx.

The possible association of human papilloma viruses (HPV) with laryngopharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma is under investigation. Recent work suggests regional differences in the prevalence of HPV infection in the hypopharynx. The present study investigates the prevalence of HPV in tissue obtained from a series of piriform fossae. Piriform fossa epithelium was harvested from 12 autopsy cases free of local disease. DNA was obtained by SDS/Proteinase K digestion. Evidence of HPV infection was documented by the polymerase chain reaction using oligonucleotide primers complementary to sequences in t
