Biparietal Osteodystrophy Visualized on a Dermatologist's Scalp Examination.

Biparietal osteodystrophy, also known as biparietal thinning, is an uncommon illness that causes symmetrical thinning of the parietal bones. It primarily affects women in their sixth and seventh decades of life. We present a case of a 73-year-old female with osteoporosis and osteoarthritis who visited a dermatology clinic with a bulging mass around her vertex scalp, accompanied by episodes of dizziness and blurred vision. The patient had a history of head trauma, but the skull abnormality was observed prior to these episodes. Laboratory testing was unremarkable except for high vitamin D levels

Temporoparietal fascia: an anatomic and histologic reinvestigation with new potential clinical applications.

Temporoparietal fascia constitutes a very important structural unit from both an aesthetic and a reconstructive surgical point of view. A histologically supported anatomic study was conducted for the reappraisal of the anatomic relationships and clinical application potentials of the data obtained. Anatomy of the temporoparietal fascia was investigated on 20 sides from 10 cadavers. After dissections, necropsies were obtained to demonstrate histologic features of the temporoparietal fascia. The outer part of the temporoparietal fascia is continuous with the superficial musculoaponeurotic system

Characterisation of osseous bodies of the distal phalanx of foals.

The distal phalanx and metacarpal physis of both forelimbs of 32 Thoroughbred foals 3-32 weeks of age were radiographed to identify those limbs with osseous bodies at a palmar process (PP) of the distal phalanx. Osseous bodies (ossicles) were identified radiographically in 19% of the foals. Sixteen of the 32 foals were selected for microradiographic and histological evaluation: 6 foals with radiographic evidence of ossicles and 10 foals without. Fourteen ossicles of the PP were observed radiographically. Ossicles were either a triangular bone fragment at the palmar aspect of the distal angle o

Rupture or traumatic dislocation of cranial suture on infants, involvement of the lambdoidal accessory bones (Wormian bones): case presentation and analysis.

BACKGROUND: Sutural or Wormian bones are accessory bones of genetic and hereditary relevance, considered as ethnic and anatomical variables. Recently, they have been related to a certain type of congenital alterations such as osteogenesis imperfecta; however, there is no description in the literature of their involvement in skull fractures in infants. CASE PRESENTATION: We present a case of a male patient aged 15 months who suffered a fall from the stairs of his home approximately 6 h before arrival in the emergency room. This fall of approximately 1 m in height and with an area of direct imp

Successful Treatment of Anal Canal Cancer Metastasis to the Cranial Bones: A Case Report and Literature Review.

Single metastasis to the cranial bone represents a very uncommon occurrence that can arise from an anal canal cancer. No cases of cranial bone metastasis from anal canal carcinoma are available in the literature. Herein, we present a case of a unique metastatic lesion to the right parietal bone that occurred after curative chemoradiotherapy of primary squamous cell anal canal carcinoma. The patient received radiotherapy and systemic platinum-based chemotherapy, with optimal local control, high compliance and a well tolerable level of toxicity.

Surviving (but not thriving) after cranial vault trauma: A case study from Transylvania.

OBJECTIVE: To link an antemortem cranial injury on the left parietal bone with potential neurocognitive consequences. MATERIALS: The skeleton of a male individual from a Székely archaeological site in Transylvania was examined. The skeleton was radiocarbon dated to Cal AD 1450 and AD 1640 and presented a well-healed antemortem penetrating cranial injury on the left parietal bone. METHODS: Macroscopic and radiographic analyses were conducted and the cranium was also archived digitally with a Faro FreeStyle3D scanner. In addition, well-known literature from neuroscience was synthesized in orde

Regional variability in craniofacial stiffness: a study in normal and Crouzon mice during postnatal development.

Craniosynostosis (CS) is the premature closure of craniofacial joints known as sutures. Typically, this condition is treated by numerous invasive surgical interventions. Previously we investigated the level of mechanical strain induced due to frontal bone loading on a mouse model of this condition in light of a minimally invasive cyclic bone loading, showing success in retaining coronal suture patency in the Crouzon mouse model. Here we expanded on the previous investigations and characterised the response to external loading on the anterior part of the parietal bone, posterior part of the par

Imaging of skull vault tumors in adults.

The skull vault, formed by the flat bones of the skull, has a limited spectrum of disease that lies between the fields of neuro- and musculoskeletal radiology. Its unique abnormalities, as well as other ubiquitous ones, present particular features in this location. Moreover, some benign entities in this region may mimic malignancy if analyzed using classical bone-tumor criteria, and proper patient management requires being familiar with these presentations. This article is structured as a practical review offering a systematic diagnostic approach to focal calvarial lesions, broadly organized i

Toll-Like Receptor 2 Stimulation of Osteoblasts Mediates Staphylococcus Aureus Induced Bone Resorption and Osteoclastogenesis through Enhanced RANKL.

Severe Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) infections pose an immense threat to population health and constitute a great burden for the health care worldwide. Inter alia, S. aureus septic arthritis is a disease with high mortality and morbidity caused by destruction of the infected joints and systemic bone loss, osteoporosis. Toll-Like receptors (TLRs) are innate immune cell receptors recognizing a variety of microbial molecules and structures. S. aureus recognition via TLR2 initiates a signaling cascade resulting in production of various cytokines, but the mechanisms by which S. aureus causes r

[Multiple myeloma manifesting as a solitary cranial tumor. Case report].

A 76-year-old female struck her head in the parietal region and noticed a soft scalp mass. Approximately 3 months later, the mass was enlarged and she was evaluated at a local hospital. Although the tentative diagnosis was old subcutaneous hematoma, incision of the scalp revealed not hematoma but rather a tissue and bony defect. On admission to the authors' institution, she was found to have a round, smooth, subcutaneous mass in the upper left parietal region. The tumor was about 5 cm in diameter and 4 cm in height, and was soft, nonpainful, and pulsatile. Plain X-rays revealed an osteolytic l

Transcranial orbital decompression in severe cases of unilateral exophthalmos.

Intracranial transtemporal orbital decompressions in one case of massive fibrous dysplasia of temporal, parietal and maxillary bones and in two cases of meningioma of the sphenoidal region are described. Surgery for fibrous dysplasia, even if extensive, must always be modified according to cosmetic and functional aspects. In bone-invading meningioma, large decompressing resections should be made. They may save the eye and arrest the progress of the disease for long periods of time.

Adult traumatic leptomeningeal cyst: case report.

A 60-year-old man presented with a traumatic leptomeningeal cyst manifesting as local tenderness in the right parietal region and local headache 2 years after head injury. Magnetic resonance imaging showed a small arachnoid cyst under bone defect. Dural and bone plasty were performed. Intraoperative examination found small and round defects of the dura and bone. Progressive headache was relieved after the surgery. This rare case of adult posttraumatic leptomeningeal cyst occurred within an unusually short period after trauma, and was associated with a small and round bone defect and small dura

Further analysis of the Crouzon mouse: effects of the FGFR2(C342Y) mutation are cranial bone-dependent.

Crouzon syndrome is a debilitating congenital disorder involving abnormal craniofacial skeletal development caused by mutations in fibroblast growth factor receptor-2 (FGFR2). Phenotypic expression in humans exhibits an autosomal dominant pattern that commonly involves premature fusion of the coronal suture (craniosynostosis) and severe midface hypoplasia. To further investigate the biologic mechanisms by which the Crouzon syndrome-associated FGFR2(C342Y) mutation leads to abnormal craniofacial skeletal development, we created congenic BALB/c FGFR2(C342Y/+) mice. Here, we show that BALB/c FGFR

Studies of otic capsule morphology and gene expression in the Mov13 mouse--an animal model of type I osteogenesis imperfecta.

Type I osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) is a disorder of skeletal bones characterized by bone fragility and blue sclera, which can result from mutations in genes encoding for type I collagen--the COL1A1 and COL1A2 genes. Fifty percent of patients with type I OI develop hearing loss and associated histopathological changes in the otic capsule that are indistinguishable from otosclerosis, a major cause of acquired hearing loss. In an attempt to elucidate molecular and cellular mechanisms of hearing loss in type I OI, we have studied the Mov13 mouse, which has served as an animal model of type I OI b

Piezoelectric osteotomy: a new technique for bone surgery-advantages in craniofacial surgery.

INTRODUCTION: Ultrasonic bone cutting is a new surgical technique used in dentistry to section hard tissues without damaging adjacent soft tissues. We hypothesized that such a device could also be useful in craniofacial surgery, particularly during the removal of the superior orbital roof during craniofaciostenosis surgery. MATERIALS AND METHODS: An ultrasonic device was employed in different craniofacial surgical procedures: 1. to remove the superior orbital roof in 30 cases of craniofaciostenosis, 2. to perform a Le Fort III osteotomy for the treatment of Crouzon syndrome in two patients, 3
