Polarity-specific transcranial direct current stimulation effects on object-selective neural responses in the inferior parietal lobe.

Neuromodulation techniques such as transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) are routinely used for treating neurological and neuropsychiatric disorders, and for enhancement of cognitive abilities. Recently, their effectiveness in modulating behavioral and neural responses has been questioned. Here we use excitatory and inhibitory tDCS prior to a functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) experiment to show that neural responses for an area's preferred stimuli depend on the polarity of stimulation. This is an important, yet overlooked, data point in demonstrating the effectiveness of th

Rare incidence of parietal lobe metastasis in an adult with desmoplastic/nodular medulloblastoma: A case report and review of the literature.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Medulloblastoma in adults is a rare and highly aggressive central nervous system (CNS) tumor, representing less than 1 % of all brain tumors. Supratentorial metastasis is uncommon, and extra-neural metastasis occurs in approximately 5 % of cases, primarily in frontal and temporal lobes. Here, we present an exceptional case of parietal lobe metastasis in an adult with desmoplastic/nodular medulloblastoma. To explore prior cases and establish the uniqueness of our case, we conducted a thorough search on the PubMed database. CASE PRESENTATION: A 46-year-old male, who

Parietal lobe source localization and sensitivity to hyperventilation in a patient with subclinical rhythmic electrographic discharges of adults (SREDA).

OBJECTIVE: Subclinical rhythmic electrographic discharges of adults (SREDA) is currently considered a benign EEG pattern of uncertain significance. The underlying cortical sources and generating mechanisms are unknown. We performed a source localization analysis of SREDA with the aim of better understanding this unusual EEG pattern. METHODS: Multiple spontaneous episodes of typical SREDA were recorded in a patient during continuous EEG monitoring. Additional SREDA episodes were induced by hyperventilation. Source localization was carried out using statistical non-parametric mapping (SNPM) of

Reliable manual segmentation of the frontal, parietal, temporal, and occipital lobes on magnetic resonance images of healthy subjects.

BACKGROUND: It is a challenge to reliably measure the lobar volumes from magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) data. OBJECTIVE: Description of a landmark-based method for volumetric segmentation of the brain into the four cerebral lobes from MR images. METHOD: The segmentation method relies on a combination of anatomical landmarks and geometrical definitions. The first step, described previously, is a segmentation of the four lobes on the surface of the brain. The internal borders between the lobes are defined on the axial slices of the brain. The intra- and inter- rater reliability was determine

Linguistic and gait disturbance in a child with Laurence-Moon-Biedl syndrome: left temporal and parietal lobe hypoplasia.

Laurence-Moon-Biedl syndrome is an autosomal recessive disorder characterized by retinitis pigmentosa, obesity, polydactyly, hypogenitalism, mental retardation, and renal abnormalities. We report the linguistic and gait disorders in a child with Laurence-Moon-Biedl syndrome associated with left temporal and parietal hypoplasia as determined by magnetic resonance imaging. Our patient was mildly mentally retarded, scoring better on the performance subtest than on the verbal subtest. He received serial assessments for developmental, language, speech, and gait functions, before and after rehabilit

Parietal lobe and thalamic nuclei volumetry in first-episode psychosis: Relation with trauma in a paired sibling study.

Volumetric changes in the parietal lobe of patients with first-episode psychosis (FEP) remain underexplored, despite previous studies suggesting some structural abnormalities in this region. This cortical area, connected to the thalamus, is part of networks that have been linked to cognitive impairments in the schizophrenia spectrum. In this study, we processed structural MRI images using FreeSurfer to investigate the parietal cortex and thalamic nuclei in a cohort of 30 participants across three groups: 10 FEP patients, 10 unaffected siblings, and 10 matched healthy controls. We also examined

Functional connectivity between parietal and temporal lobes mediates internal forward models during speech production.

Internal forward models hypothesize functional links between motor and sensory systems for predicting the consequences of actions. Recently, the cascaded theory proposes that somatosensory estimation in the inferior parietal lobe (IPL) can be a relay computational structure, converting motor signals into predictions of auditory consequences in a serial processing manner during speech production. The study used fMRI with functional connectivity (FC) analyses to investigate the proposed cascaded processes using three speech tasks: overt articulation (OA), silent articulation (SA) and imagined ar

Functional and structural alterations in different durations of untreated illness in the frontal and parietal lobe in major depressive disorder.

Major depressive disorder (MDD) is one of the most disabling illnesses that profoundly restricts psychosocial functions and impairs quality of life. However, the treatment rate of MDD is surprisingly low because the availability and acceptability of appropriate treatments are limited. Therefore, identifying whether and how treatment delay affects the brain and the initial time point of the alterations is imperative, but these changes have not been thoroughly explored. We investigated the functional and structural alterations of MDD for different durations of untreated illness (DUI) using regio

Mapping and Preserving the Visuospatial Network by repetitive nTMS and DTI Tractography in Patients With Right Parietal Lobe Tumors.

INTRODUCTION: The goal of brain tumor surgery is the maximal resection of neoplastic tissue, while preserving the adjacent functional brain tissues. The identification of functional networks involved in complex brain functions, including visuospatial abilities (VSAs), is usually difficult. We report our preliminary experience using a preoperative planning based on the combination of navigated transcranial magnetic stimulation (nTMS) and DTI tractography to provide the preoperative 3D reconstruction of the visuospatial (VS) cortico-subcortical network in patients with right parietal lobe tumors

Menstrual Cycle Variations in Gray Matter Volume, White Matter Volume and Functional Connectivity: Critical Impact on Parietal Lobe.

The role of gonadal hormones in neural plasticity remains unclear. This study aimed to examine the effects of naturally fluctuating hormone levels over the menstrual cycle in healthy females. Gray matter, functional connectivity (FC) and white matter changes over the cycle were assessed by using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), resting state fMRI, and structural MRIs, respectively, and associated with serum gonadal hormone levels. Moreover, electrocutaneous sensitivity was evaluated in 14 women in four phases of their menstrual cycle (menstrual, follicular, ovulatory, and luteal).

[A patient with left parietal lobe infarction presenting with bilateral limb-kinetic apraxia, bilateral agraphaesthesia, and bilateral astereognosis].

We report a 77-year-old male who presented with acute cerebral infarction in the left posterior central gyrus and left superior parietal lobule, and left supramarginal gyrus and its subcortical white matter, resulting in bilateral agraphaesthesia, bilateral astereognosis, and bilateral limb-kinetic apraxia. It is generally known that limb-kinetic apraxia and sensory dysfunction appear on the contralateral side of the lesion, but in this case, limb-kinetic apraxia and some sensory dysfunction appeared on the ipsilateral upper limb as well as the lesion. This suggests that, similar to Liepmann's

[Multiple arteriovenous malformations of left parietal lobe and left cerebellar hemisphere with symptomatic trigeminal neuralgia: a case report].

The authors described a case of multiple arteriovenous malformations of the left parietal lobe and the left cerebellar hemisphere, and presented a review of literature. A 42-year-old right-handed man was admitted to our Dept. of Neurosurgery on October 20, 1983, with left facial pain and occipitalgia. He had an episode of subarachnoid hemorrhage ten years ago, however, its etiology was not clear at neurological examination. This brief episode of pain began on the left side of his face about 9 years ago and has been gradually increasing. Although he has been treated with trigeminal nerve blocks

When having a limb means feeling overcomplete. Xenomelia, the chronic sense of disownership and the right parietal lobe hypothesis.

ABSTRACTXenomelia is a rare condition characterized by a persistent and intense desire for amputation of one or more healthy limbs. Some frequent clinical manifestations suggest the involvement of distinct neural substrates. Specifically, recent aetiopathological hypotheses about xenomelia propose a neurodevelopmental origin, highlighting the putative contribution of the right parietal lobe and right insula, known to subserve the construction of a coherent representation of the body as a whole. This literature review is aimed at analysing relevant findings about structural and functional brain
