Oncocytomas are rare tumors in the head and neck region. They occur commonly in salivary glands, especially in parotid glands. The prevalence is 0.5% to 1.2% in parotideal neoplasms. Oncocytomas rarely occur bilaterally. To our knowledge, only 20 cases were reported in the literature. A case with bilateral oncocytoma was presented with clinical, radiologic, and pathologic findings and treatment options in this study.

An inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor, previously known as an inflammatory pseudotumor, is an uncommon neoplasm. This tumor, which has characteristic morphologic and immunohistochemical features, is mostly seen in the lung. We present a rare case of an inflammatory myofibroblastic pseudotumor of the parotid gland. A 45-year-old woman presented with a 4-month history of a swelling in her right parotid region. A partial parotidectomy with preservation of the facial nerve branches was performed. The incidence of inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor in the parotid gland is low, and local resection i

BACKGROUND: Our proposed modified technique includes creating a posterior pedicle parotid gland fascia flap without separating the great auricular nerve branches through an aesthetic incision. This fascial flap is sutured back to the parotid bed creating a barrier of the aberrant regeneration of sympathetic fibers thus, theoretically, decreasing the incidence of Frey's syndrome.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Superficial parotidectomy for benign parotid neoplasms was carried out using either the conventional (Group 1) or modified (Group 2) technique. Outcomes of the two groups were reviewed. Both tech

The major salivary glands consist of the parotid, submandibular, and sublingual glands. Most neoplasms in other subsites in the head and neck are squamous cell carcinoma, but tumors of the salivary glands may be benign or malignant. Surgical treatment differs if the lesion is benign, and therefore preoperative fine needle aspiration is important in salivary neoplasms. The role of imaging is to attempt to determine histology, predict likelihood of a lesion being malignant, and report an imaging stage. This article reviews the various histologies, imaging features, and staging of major salivary

Benign ectopic thyroid tissue within the parotid gland is very rare with only one case reported till date in the world literature. We report a case of ectopic thyroid in the left parotid gland with an orthotopic thyroid in an elderly female, who was presented to us with the simultaneous onset of right-sided thyroid swelling and left parotid swelling for 6 months. Fine-needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) was done from both the swellings and a diagnosis of Hurthle cell neoplasm metastasizing to the left parotid gland was initially made. However, histopathological examination along with the immunoh

Salivary gland neoplasms are a relatively uncommon disease, with nearly one case per 100.000 adults estimated per year and an overall incidence of 1% of all neoplasms. The benign neoplasms are majority and the prognosis depends on the histologic type, grade, localization, soft tissue infiltration, regional and distant metastasis. The main treatment is surgery with caution to facial nerve in the major salivary glands, followed by radiotherapy and chemotherapy in selected cases. The objective of this review is to provide the lector an historic approach about salivary gland diseases treatment, wi

Of all head and neck neoplasms, 3% are malignant salivary neoplasms. Only 20% of them affect submandibular glands. These tumours vary histologically, which results from the complex embryogenesis of the glands. Malignant submandibular gland tumours are twice as frequent as parotid gland tumours. Simultaneous occurrence of quite different malignant tumours in the same salivary gland is extremely rare. The age range of patients affected with salivary gland neoplasms is wide. However, the occurrence of these neoplasms in children is exceptionally rare. The authors describe a case of a 13-year-old

Salivary gland tumors are a rare, histologically heterogeneous group of tumors which constitute approximately 4–6 % of all head and neck neoplasms. In 2/3 of cases they are benign, especially in the parotid gland. We report about a rare tumor of the parotid gland presenting as an extraskeletal chondroma. Histologically there were multiple S 100 protein-positive nests of chondrocytes. The externally completed cytology suspected a pleomorphic adenoma, nevertheless, the final histopathological findings showed another tumor entity.

Children seldom develop salivary gland tumors, which account for less than 5% of all salivary gland tumors. In total, 10%-15% of these neoplasms arise from the submandibular, sublingual, and small salivary glands, with the parotid gland accounting for the majority of cases. We describe a case of sialoblastoma in a 2-year-old female Ethiopian child who had a history of right cheek swelling gradually from birth. The mass had a firm consistency and was fungating in the center. In the right parotid gland and masticator space, a large lobulated irregular heterogeneously enhancing mass was discovere

Oncocytoma is a rare, benign salivary neoplasm composed of mitochondria-rich cells called oncocytes. Although oncocytoma usually occurs in the parotid glands, it has much less commonly been reported to occur in minor salivary gland tissues. Although there have been a few reported cases of oncocytomas being found in the parapharyngeal space, most if not all cases seem to be extensions of deep lobe parotid tumors. We present a case of a 73-year-old man with a previous history of prostate cancer that had the incidental finding of an (18)F-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) image of a highly avid parapharyn

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The surgical approach to parotid tumors is different for benign and malignant neoplasms, but the clinical symptoms do not correlate well with histology. Difficulties in tumor classification also arise in imaging modalities, in which sonography has the lowest and MR imaging, the highest accuracy. The purpose of this study was to review our experience using conventional MR imaging of the neck in the evaluation of parotid tumors and to evaluate which MR imaging findings are best able to predict malignant histology.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Eighty-four consecutive patients (

Adenoid cystic carcinomas (ACC) of the head and neck are relatively rare tumors, consisting of approximately 10-15% of all salivary gland neoplasms. ACC, a slow-growing aggressive malignant tumor of salivary gland commonly seen in the submandibular, sublingual, minor salivary glands is seldom found in the parotid. Calculus, the common cause of salivary gland dysfunction is usually identified in submandibular salivary gland because of its duct anatomy and physiochemical characteristic serous secretion. We report an unusual case of co-existent presentation of ACC with salivary calculi in the par

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: Recent studies suggest that extracapsular dissection (ECD) is an option for the resection of certain benign parotid tumors. This study investigates complication rates and effectiveness of ECD versus superficial parotidectomy (SP) for the treatment of primary benign parotid neoplasms.
STUDY DESIGN: Systematic literature review with meta-analysis.
METHODS: Studies available for inclusion evaluated the complications and effectiveness of ECD and SP as surgical techniques for the treatment of solitary, benign parotid tumors. An Ovid/Medline search revealed nine articles tha

The intimate anatomical relationship of the facial nerve to the parotid parenchyma has a significant influence on the presenting signs and symptoms, diagnosis and treatment of parotid neoplasms. However, to our knowledge, hyperactivity of this nerve, presenting as facial spasm, has never been described as the presenting sign or symptom of a parotid malignancy. We report a case of carcinoma arising in a recurrent pleomorphic adenoma of the left parotid gland (i.e., carcinoma ex pleomorphic adenoma) that presented with hemifacial spasms. We outline the differential diagnosis of hemifacial spasm

First case of parotid gland tuberculosis publicated to date is presented after intravesical instillation of BCG for a superficial bladder cancer. The diagnosis of the parotid gland tuberculosis is difficult because it is usually indistinguishable from a neoplasm. Combined fine-needle aspiration cytology with PCR or LCR amplification of mycobacterial DNA could be a good diagnostic tool avoiding an open biopsy.

The epidemiology of salivary gland tumors worldwide is not very well defined. Although many studies on this subject have been undertaken, the data are generally focused on specific topics such as parotid gland neoplasms or tumors of the major salivary glands. We conducted a study to establish the prevalence and distribution of benign and malignant neoplasms of both the major and minor salivary glands at a single institution. We reviewed 244,204 cases that had come through our pathology department from January 1994 through December 2005 and found 235 cases of a salivary gland neoplasm (0.09%).

Facial nerve neuromas rarely occur in the intra-parotid segment of the facial nerve and when they do, masquerade as a parotid lump. The imaging and clinical features of the intra-parotid facial neuroma overlaps with the more commonly encountered salivary gland neoplasms and is thus overlooked. However, if not recognized, may result in serious and avoidable adverse events for the patient if biopsied or surgically removed. These include pain, facial nerve palsy and cosmetic deformity. In this report, we present the case of a 47-year-old male patient with an intra-parotid facial nerve neuroma wit

Radical treatment of parotid neoplasms may lead to complex parotid defects that present functional and aesthetic reconstructive challenges. We report our experience using the lateral thoracic wall as a single donor site. Between 2003 and 2009, four patients with malignant tumours in the parotid gland underwent radical parotidectomy and simultaneous reconstruction using a perforator latissimus dorsi cutaneous free flap (de-epithelialized and entire skin paddle in two cases each). A thoracodorsal nerve graft was used in all cases to replace the intraglandular branches of the facial nerve. Costal
