Biomechanical and clinical alterations of the hip joint following femoral neck fracture and implantation of bipolar hip endoprosthesis.

The implantation of a bipolar partial hip endoprosthesis is a treatment of choice for displaced medial femoral neck fracture. We present an experimental study which asses and compare biomechanical and clinical status through period before and after hip fracture and implantation of bipolar partial hip endoprosthesis. This study encompassed 75 patients who suffered from an acute medial femoral neck fracture and were treated with the implantation of a bipolar partial hip endoprosthesis. Their biomechanical status (stress distribution on the hip joint weight bearing area) and clinical status (Harr

Growth disturbances after injuries of the proximal tibial epiphysis.

Proximal tibial epiphyseal fractures are very rare. Partial growth arrest of the physis can cause important axial malalignment in the frontal or the sagittal plane or both, with subsequent shift of the weight-bearing axis onto the injured compartment of the knee joint. To detect the exact extent of the deformity, comparative radiographs of the contralateral side in two planes using long films as well as standing whole leg orthoradiographs are desirable. Accurate measurements in our series of six patients revealed deformities in two, which required secondary surgical correction.

Fixation of a split fracture of the lateral tibial plateau with a locking screw plate instead of cannulated screws would allow early weight bearing: a computational exploration.

PURPOSE: To assess, with finite element (FE) calculations, whether immediate weight bearing would be possible after surgical stabilization either with cannulated screws or with a locking plate in a split fracture of the lateral tibial plateau (LTP). METHODS: A split fracture of the LTP was recreated in a FE model of a human tibia. A three-dimensional FE model geometry of a human femur-tibia system was obtained from the VAKHUM project database, and was built from CT images from a subject with normal bone morphologies and normal alignment. The mesh of the tibia was reconverted into a geometry o

[Modified neck-lengthening osteotomy after Morscher in children and adolescents].

OBJECTIVE: Growth disorders (e. g. caused by congenital hip dislocation, Perthes disease or bacterial coxitis) often lead to an infantile deformity of the proximal femur with a shortened femoral neck and displaced grater trochanter. In 1988, Morscher and Buess described a femoral neck lenghtening osteotomy for treatment of adults. For the first time, we show a modification of this osteotomy for children and adolescents with a locking plate system. The aim is to restore the normal anatomy of the femoral neck and biomechanics of the proximal femur. INDICATIONS: All symptomatic deformities of th

Outcomes Following Partial Foot Amputation in Three Cats.

Limited data are available regarding partial foot amputation (amputation of two adjacent digits, excluding the first digit) in cats. Three domestic shorthair cats with a median age of 4.2 yr were presented for partial foot amputation between 2010 and 2022. Neoplasia was the indication for partial foot amputation in two cats; one cat underwent partial foot amputation for treatment of a chronic wound. All cats underwent lateral partial foot amputation (excision of digits 4-5) of a thoracic limb. One cat had excisions at the level of the metacarpal-phalangeal joint, and two cats had excision at t

Clinical application of modified lateral-perineal approach for obturator ring injuries.

BACKGROUND: Anterior pelvic ring injuries frequently involve obturator ring disruption. With advancements in surgical techniques and rising patient expectations, there is growing interest in repairing these injuries within anterior pelvic ring treatment strategies. While current approaches (e.g., transabdominal, ilioinguinal) are used, they present limitations. This study describes a Modified Lateral-Perineal Approach (MLPA) for treating obturator ring fractures. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 22 pelvic fracture patients with obturator ring injuries that had been treated via the MLPA. A

Traumatic epiphysiolysis of the proximal femur.

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: Several former studies show the treatment of slipped epiphysis of the femoral head (SEFH). Its reason is rather unknown. On the other hand the rare traumatic SEFH takes place due to a real accident. According to the literature these injuries are treated like chronic SEFHs. The aim of this study is to show the differences in pathology and treatment of an acute traumatic SEFH in relationship to the chronic SEFH. PATIENTS AND METHODS: In 8 patients dislocated traumatic SEFHs were reduced anatomically and stabilized by the means of 3 to 4 Kirschner- (K-) wires or two cancell

Pericuboid fracture-dislocation with cuboid subluxation.

The case of a 44-year-old male with a traumatic pericuboid fracture-dislocation consisting of disruption of the midtarsal, tarsometatarsal and pericuboid articulations is presented. The cuboid was partially dislocated without cuboid fracture. Treatment consisted of open reduction with stable internal fixation followed by early range of motion and protected weight-bearing for 12 weeks. Functional outcome results were excellent at final follow-up.

Management of pubic symphysis diastasis with locking plates: a report of 11 cases.

INTRODUCTION: The optimal method of fixation of symphyseal disruptions in pelvic ring injuries and post-operative rehabilitation is still debated. Options include two-hole, multi-hole and multiplanar plates. Post-operative rehabilitation can range from non-weight bearing bilaterally to full weight-bearing with crutches. Locking symphyseal plates have recently been introduced. There is a paucity of literature evaluating their use in such injuries. We present the first clinical case series of symphyseal diastasis managed with locking plates. METHODS: A retrospective analysis of a single centre

Comparison of monosodium iodoacetate, medial meniscal transection, and partial medial meniscectomy in vivo rat models of osteoarthritis from the pain and industrial perspective.

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a major global health burden marked by progressive cartilage degeneration and chronic pain with intertwined inflammatory and neuropathic mechanisms. This study compared three rat OA models, monosodium iodoacetate (MIA), medial meniscal transection (MMT), and partial medial meniscectomy (MNX), to assess their translational value, suitability for pharmaceutical research, and identify the most robust and reproducible model for preclinical OA pain research. OA was induced in male Wistar (MIA) or Sprague Dawley (MMT, MNX) rats, and pain progression was evaluated by testing me

A Prospective Study on Radiological and Functional Outcome of Displaced Tongue Type Intra-Articular Calcaneal Fractures Treated by Percutaneous Screw Fixation.

INTRODUCTION: Calcaneal fractures have posed a challenge to orthopaedic surgeon for many years. The major problem is to reconstruct the fracture and improve healing of the fracture and also the surrounding tissues. Anatomic restoration of the three-dimensional anatomy of the calcaneum is the goal of surgical management of calcaneal fractures. Over the years, various techniques have been developed to accomplish this goal. AIM: To determine the functional outcome in displaced tongue-type calcaneal fracture treated by percutaneous screw fixation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A prospective study was c

[Arthroscopy-assisted ankle arthrodesis with MIPF. An alternative proposal].

The ankle is a loading joint with a small contact surface and it is therefore very vulnerable to trauma, as it is an exposed region. It is a unique joint because it forms several joints. In this joint the load falls on the contact area, which is one third of the knee or the hip, and it is the most important part of our musculo-skeletal system designed for ambulation and bipedestation. In case of ankle injuries, arthrodesis is a procedure performed to relieve pain, decrease deformity and provide stability. An optimum result of this procedure may be easily achieved if the ankle is fixed in the r

Medial Hoffa Fracture: A Case Report and Literature Review of Approach and Management.

BACKGROUND Hoffa fractures are an uncommon form of coronal fracture that impact the femoral condyle. As a result, they are not very prevalent. It is necessary to perform anatomical reduction and rigorous fixation on these fractures; however, there is no consensus among medical professionals on the surgical procedure and implant that would be the most successful in treating these fractures. CASE REPORT A 50-year-old woman who had poliomyelitis in her right lower limb presented with a displaced medial Hoffa fracture of her left knee. She had fallen and was suffering from poliomyelitis.
