Pulmonary microbiota intervention alleviates fine particulate matter-induced lung inflammation in broilers.

Fine particulate matter (PM2.5) released during the livestock industry endangers the respiratory health of animals. Our previous findings suggested that broilers exposed to PM2.5 exhibited lung inflammation and changes in the pulmonary microbiome. Therefore, this study was to investigate whether the pulmonary microbiota plays a causal role in the pathogenesis of PM2.5-induced lung inflammation. We first used antibiotics to establish a pulmonary microbiota intervention broiler model, which showed a significantly reduced total bacterial load in the lungs without affecting the microbiota composit

Characteristics, Accumulation, and Potential Health Risks of Antimony in Atmospheric Particulate Matter.

Antimony (Sb), a priority pollutant listed by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA), can cause adverse effects on human health, with particular impacts on skin, eyes, gastrointestinal tract, and respiratory system. In this study, a database of Sb concentrations in the global atmosphere was developed through a survey of measurements published in more than 600 articles, which was then used to assess the health risks of Sb exposure based on a USEPA assessment model. Most measurements showed Sb concentrations of less than ∼10 ng m-3, but those at several contaminated sites exhibited Sb

Aggravation of Myocardial Ischemia upon Particulate Matter Exposure in Atherosclerosis Animal Model.

The health problems caused by air pollution (especially particulate pollution) are getting more and more attention, especially among cardiovascular disease patients, which aggravates complicated disorders and causes poor prognosis. The simple myocardial ischemia (MI) or particulate matter (PM) exposure model is unsuitable for such studies of diseases with multiple causes. Here, a method for constructing a composite model combining PM exposure, atherosclerosis, and myocardial ischemia has been described. ApoE-/- mice were fed with a high-fat diet for 16 weeks to develop atherosclerosis, trachea

Predictive and Preventive Mucosal Communications in Particulate Matter Exposure-Linked Renal Distress.

Despite research into the epidemiological link between exposure to particulate matter (PM) and renal disorder, there is limited information available on the etiological complexity and molecular mechanisms. Among the early responsive tissues to PM exposure, the mucosal barrier of the airway and alimentary tract may be a crucial source of pathologic mediators leading to inflammatory renal diseases, including chronic kidney disease (CKD). Given that harmful responses and products in mucosa exposed to PM may enter the circulation and cause adverse outcomes in the kidney, the aim of the present rev

Developmental toxicity induced by particulate matter (PM2.5) in zebrafish (Danio rerio) model.

Contemporary research in epidemiology has found that being exposed to air pollution at an early stage of life has associations with both acute and chronic conditions of the multi-organs. Nevertheless, the reasons for this have yet to be fully explained. Because of this there is a need for a robust investigation into the damaging toxic influence of diesel particulate matter (PM2.5) on living organisms. This study is aimed to investigate the developmental toxicity of PM2.5 by using zebrafish (Danio rerio) embryo/larvae as a disease model and to understand the toxicity effects of PM2.5 on ecologi

Fine particulate matter-induced lung inflammation is mediated by pyroptosis in mice.

BACKGROUND: Exposure to ambient air-borne fine particulate matter (PM2.5) increases respiratory morbidity and mortality. The mechanisms underlying PM2.5-induced adverse effects remain unclear. This study aimed to uncover the molecular mechanisms of PM2.5-induced lung toxicity using a mouse model. METHODS: Scanning electron microscopy and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry were used to examine and analyze PM2.5 morphology and element compositions, respectively. Twenty four male mice were randomly divided into three groups: control (PBS), PM2.5 (4.0 mg/kg b.w.), and PM2.5 + Z-YVAD-FMK

Sources of particulate-matter air pollution and its oxidative potential in Europe.

Particulate matter is a component of ambient air pollution that has been linked to millions of annual premature deaths globally1-3. Assessments of the chronic and acute effects of particulate matter on human health tend to be based on mass concentration, with particle size and composition also thought to play a part4. Oxidative potential has been suggested to be one of the many possible drivers of the acute health effects of particulate matter, but the link remains uncertain5-8. Studies investigating the particulate-matter components that manifest an oxidative activity have yielded conflicting

Global Importance of Hydroxymethanesulfonate in Ambient Particulate Matter: Implications for Air Quality.

Sulfur compounds are an important constituent of particulate matter, with impacts on climate and public health. While most sulfur observed in particulate matter has been assumed to be sulfate, laboratory experiments reveal that hydroxymethanesulfonate (HMS), an adduct formed by aqueous phase chemical reaction of dissolved HCHO and SO2, may be easily misinterpreted in measurements as sulfate. Here we present observational and modeling evidence for a ubiquitous global presence of HMS. We find that filter samples collected in Shijiazhuang, China, and examined with ion chromatography within 9 days

Effects of particulate matter exposure on semen quality: A retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Particulate matter (PM) exposure is closely associated with male infertility. Even though an association between poor semen quality and PM exposure has been widely accepted, which and when the semen parameter could be affected are still controversial. The purpose of this study is to estimate the effects of PM exposure on semen quality in Huai'an, China. OBJECTIVES AND METHODS: The study included 1955 men with 2073 semen samples between 2015 and 2017 with moderate to high exposure to air pollution in Huai'an, China. Three multivariable linear regression models were used to conduct

Long-Term Particulate Matter Exposure and Incidence of Arrhythmias: A Cohort Study.

Background Studies have shown that short-term exposure to air pollution is associated with cardiac arrhythmia hospitalization and mortality. However, the relationship between long-term particulate matter air pollution and arrhythmias is still unclear. We evaluate the prospective association between particulate matter (PM) air pollution and the risk of incident arrhythmia and its subtypes. Methods and Results Participants were drawn from a prospective cohort study of 178 780 men and women who attended regular health screening exams in Seoul and Suwon, South Korea, from 2002 to 2016. Carnosine Supplementation Mitigates the Deleterious Effects of Particulate Matter Exposure in Mice.

Background Exposure to fine airborne particulate matter ( PM 2.5) induces quantitative and qualitative defects in bone marrow-derived endothelial progenitor cells of mice, and similar outcomes in humans may contribute to vascular dysfunction and the cardiovascular morbidity and mortality associated with PM 2.5 exposure. Nevertheless, mechanisms underlying the pervasive effects of PM 2.5 are unclear and effective interventional strategies to mitigate against PM 2.5 toxicity are lacking. Furthermore, whether PM 2.5 exposure affects other types of bone marrow stem cells leading to additional hema

Personal exposure to particulate matter and inflammation among patients with periodontal disease.

The association between particulate air pollution and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) has been well documented in epidemiological studies. Periodontitis has been linked to elevated hs-CRP levels in recent studies. It is still unknown whether patients with periodontal infections are more susceptible to particulate air pollution. The aim of this study was to investigate whether particles with aerodynamic diameters of less than 2.5 μm (PM2.5) had greater effects on increasing hs-CRP among patients with periodontal infections compared to periodontally healthy individuals. We conducted

Inorganic salts in atmospheric particulate matter: Raman spectroscopy as an analytical tool.

Atmospheric particulate matter is composed of inorganic and organic components of natural and anthropogenic origin. Wind-transport is probably the most important process responsible for the emission of solid particulate matter into the troposphere, but there are also important contributions from chemical reactions due to the interaction of different atmospheric components in presence of water and solar radiation. Sulfate, nitrate and carbonate salts can be both reactants and products in this complex dynamic system, and there is no doubt about their important impact on the climate. Both simple

Myocardial mitochondrial injury induced by pulmonary exposure to particulate matter in rats.

Exposure to air pollution has been associated with acute myocardial ischemia, impaired myocardrial function, and ST-segment depression. Particulate matter (PM)-associated metals, especially vanadium and nickel, have been implicated in observed cardiovascular impairments. We aimed to assess the effect of single intratracheal pulmonary exposure to vanadium-rich respirable oil combustion PM (HP-10) on the intrinsic myocardial ischemic tolerance and mitochondrial integrity in rats. The authors subjected isolated heart tissue slices derived from saline or PM-exposed rats to low glucose low oxygen i

Urban particulate matter in Beijing, China, enhances allergen-induced murine lung eosinophilia.

It has been reported that ambient particulate matter (PM) in some large cities, such as Beijing, China, causes adverse respiratory health effects. However, there is currently no experimental report on the relationship between bronchial asthma and urban PM (UPM) in northeast Asia. In this study, the microbial and chemical substances adsorbed onto UPM collected in Beijing were excluded by heat-treatment at 360 degrees C for 30 min. The effects of UPM or heated UPM (H-UPM) toward allergic lung inflammation were compared in murine lungs to investigate the role of organic substances. ICR mice were
