Parvovirus-mediated fetal cardiomyopathy with atrioventricular nodal disease.

Acute parvovirus B19 infection (API) in pregnancy has been associated with fetal anemia and hydrops fetalis. Direct myocardial damage from API in a fetus and an infant has been described. This report presents a case of fetal second-degree heart block and cardiomyopathy secondary to API. A 19-year-old G4P1112 (gravida 4 para 2 with 1 term delivery, 1 preterm delivery, 1 termination, and 2 living children) was referred at 20 weeks gestation for fetal bradycardia. A 2:1 atrioventricular block was identified by fetal echocardiography at 23 weeks. Hydrops developed at 25 weeks. Amniocentesis and pe

Isolated velopalatine paralysis associated with parvovirus B19 infection.

A case of isolated velopalatine paralysis in an 8-year-old boy is presented. The symptoms were sudden-onset of nasal speech, regurgitation of liquids into the nose and dysphagia. Brain MRI and cerebrospinal fluid examination were normal. Infectious serologies disclosed an antibody arrangement towards parvovirus B19 that was typical of recent infection. In the absence of other positive data, the possibility of a correlation between the tenth nerve palsy and parvovirus infection is discussed.

Human parvovirus B19 associated with idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura.

Although human parvovirus B19 (PVB19) is mainly known to be the causative agent of fifth disease, it is also important in the etiopathogenesis of various hematologic disorders. Recently, its role in the occurrence of chronic anemia and pancytopenia in immunocompromised patients has been revealed. In this study, the authors searched for the presence of PVB19 in a group of patients with idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP). The PVB19 DNA was determined by nested PCR, and serologic responses to the virus were evaluated by ELISA. Viral genome was detected by PCR in the sera of 9 of the 19 pat

Current molecular epidemiology and human parvovirus B19 infection.

Viruses evolve gradually through replication. Therefore, isolates of a virus species can have different genome sequences, albeit slightly, if isolates are epidemiologically unrelated. The difference in virus genome involves difference in virus functions and clinical manifestations of virus infection. Molecular epidemiology of virus infection is a relatively new field directed at infection in humans but not other animals. Analyses are based on genomic differences between virus strains with advances in methodology related to DNA analyses, progress is being made. Classification of virus strains,

[Parvovirus B19 infection mimicking drug-induced hypersensitivity syndrome].

BACKGROUND: Clinical manifestations of primary parvovirus B19 infection vary greatly. Epidermal megalerythema is the most common feature. We report a particular form resembling a drug-induced hypersensitivity reaction. CASE REPORT: A 19-year-old man had a scarlatiniform eruption associated with multiple node enlargement, elevated liver enzymes and a abnormal white cell count with mononucleosis and lymphopenia, similar to that observed in hypersensitivity reactions. Seroconversion and positive PCR search for viral DNA established the diagnosis of primary parvovirus B19 infection. The spontaneo

Feto-placentary pathology in human parvovirus B19 infection.

In view of the scarce references concerning the histological data in congenital parvovirus human B19 infection, we intend to provide a description of the pathological features observed in six autopsies. The virus was detected by DNA hybridization (ISH-DBH), PCR and electronmicroscopy (EM) in paraffin-embedded feto-placentary tissues. These cases constitute a subset from 86 Non Immunologic Hydrops Fetalis (NIHF) cases, in which a systemic complex of inflammatory/degenerative lesions of unknown etiology was visualized by optical microscopy. In one case a syphilitic process was detected, typefyin

Human parvovirus B19 infection associated with hydrops fetalis.

Human parvovirus B19 infection has been associated with fetal anaemia, hydrops and in some cases fetal demise. We report our experience with nonimmune hydrops fetalis due to human parvovirus B19 infection in 17 pregnancies which were identified sonographically over a period of 10 years. The only baby who survived received repeated intrauterine transfusions and was normal neurodevelopmentally at 2 years follow-up. Two other fetuses who also received intrauterine transfusion did not survive. All pregnancies complicated with nonimmune hydrops should be investigated by fetal blood sampling looking

Fetoneonatal hydrops from human parvovirus B19. Case report.

Authors report the case of a newborn who died just a few hours after the birth as a result of intrauterine Parvovirus B19 infection. Diagnosis of fetal hydrops was made by ultrasound examination at the 25th week of pregnancy. Etiology was established on the basis of specific antibody findings in the serum of the mother, the fetus (by cordocentesis), and the neonate; B19 virus was then observed in the fetus and the neonate tissues after death using the dot-blot hybridization assay and the polymerase chain reaction technique for viral DNA. The severe fetal anemia was treated with intrauterine tr

[Hydrops fetalis caused by maternal Parvovirus B19 infection].

Maternal infection with human Parvovirus B19 during pregnancy is one of the rare reasons, which can lead to a not immunologically conditioned hydrops fetalis. We report here a case of intrauterine Parvovirus infection associated with hydrops fetalis, diagnosed by intrauterine sonography in the 29 week of gestation, one week after the outbreak of Erythema. The B19 infection of the low birth weight baby, delivered in the 30 week of gestation, was diagnosed serologically with specific IgM and IgG against B19 by ELISA. No malformation could be detected in the liveborn infant, who died on the third

Parvovirus-induced regression of canine transmissible venereal sarcoma.

In 1981, during the worldwide canine parvovirus (PV) epizootic, canine transmissible venereal sarcomas growing in Beagles in a colony regressed earlier than expected after the dogs became infected with PV. Subsequent studies revealed that modified-live PV vaccine (feline panleukopenia virus) was capable of preventing tumor transplantation when the vaccine was inoculated simultaneously with the tumor in a site distant from the implantation site. However, the PV vaccine had no effect if it was inoculated 3 or 18 days after the tumor was transplanted.

Fusion of parvovirus B19 receptor-binding domain and pneumococcal surface protein A induces protective immunity against parvovirus B19 and Streptococcus pneumoniae.

BACKGROUND: Parvovirus B19 (B19) is a well-known cause of fifth disease in children, but infection during pregnancy may cause hydrops fetalis and stillbirth. The receptor-binding domain (RBD) of the VP1 unique capsid plays a pivotal role in infection. Here, we aimed to improve the immunogenicity of an RBD-based vaccine by genetically fusing it with Streptococcus pneumoniae surface protein A (PspA). METHODS: Mice were intramuscularly injected with RBD-based vaccines. Antigen-specific antibodies and neutralizing activity against B19 were measured. Protective immunity against S. pneumoniae was e

Retrospective investigation of equine parvovirus-hepatitis in Italy.

Equine parvovirus-hepatitis (EqPV-H) has recently been identified as the etiological agent of Theiler's disease, a major cause of acute hepatitis and liver failure in horses. While iatrogenic transmission of EqPV-H is well-documented, the natural horizontal transmission of the virus remains poorly understood. This study provides the first comprehensive epidemiological investigation and molecular characterization of EqPV-H in equine populations across Italy. A total of 1320 archival serum samples from northern and southern Italy were screened for the presence of EqPV-H DNA by qPCR. The overall

Brugada Phenocopy in a Child With Parvovirus B19 Myocarditis.

BACKGROUND: Sodium channelopathies predispose to life-threatening arrhythmias. Brugada phenocopies (BrPs) are nongenetic conditions that mimic Brugada syndrome and may have a reversible cause. CASE PRESENTATION: A 16-month-old child presented with a 12-day ventricular tachycardia storm and a spontaneous type 1 Brugada electrocardiogram pattern during sinus rhythm. The patient initially presented with no fever and normal ventricular function on admission that deteriorated severely within 6 days. Blood viral polymerase chain reaction was positive for parvovirus B19, and endomyocardial biopsy co

Hygiene and disinfection measures for parvovirus B19 infections.

BACKGROUND: In 2024, there has been a notable surge in the incidence of infections with parvovirus B19 (B19V). This development presents significant challenges, particularly for pregnant women, daycare centers, and medical facilities with vulnerable patients. PROPERTIES OF B19V: B19V is transmitted primarily by droplet infection, directly and indirectly through contaminated surfaces. It is highly contagious and can have serious health consequences for at-risk groups, especially for pregnant women and immunocompromised individuals. There is not yet much data available on the specific tenacity/

Parvovirus: Conservative management of fetal anemia and hydrops.

Following the COVID-19 pandemic, Northwestern Europe has experienced a marked increase in congenital parvovirus infections. This rise is attributed to social distancing measures which disrupted the usual seasonal variation of parvovirus B19. Fetal infection may cause severe anemia, thrombocytopenia, and hydrops fetalis, with significant risk of intrauterine death. Therefore, when acute parvovirus B19 infection is confirmed by maternal serology, serial ultrasound surveillance of the middle cerebral artery peak systolic velocity is recommended. Intrauterine transfusion remains the only establish
