Pasteurella multocida in psittacines: prevalence, pathology, and characterization of isolates.

Although the pathogenicity of Pasteurella multocida for psittacines (parrots and their relatives) has been documented in several case reports, the associated pathologic syndromes have not been well defined nor have the isolates been characterized. In addition, the prevalence of P. multocida in psittacines has not been determined. Three hundred twenty-eight psittacines (253 clinically healthy and 75 clinically ill) were cultured for P. multocida. Pasteurella multocida was not isolated from the pharynx, choana, or cloaca of psittacines. However, in five dead psittacines submitted for necropsy, P

[Interstitial pneumonia and sepsis due to a Pasteurella multocida infection].

HISTORY AND CLINICAL FINDINGS: A 65-year-old diabetic (requiring insulin during the last year) was admitted as an emergency because of a septic temperature rising to 40 degrees C with rigor, tachycardia (up to 120/min) and dyspnoea. On examination there was local reddening and swelling of the skin over the right thenar eminence and along the lower arm. Two days before admission a bad scratch had been inflicted on his right hand by a cat. He had first noticed the reddening and swelling 10 hours after the incident; 1 1/2 days after the scratch and 9-10 hours before hospitalization the first bout

Colonization pattern of Pasteurella pneumotropica in mice with latent pasteurellosis.

Colonization pattern of Pasteurella pneumotropica (P. pneumotropica) in mice with latent pasteurellosis was examined with the original selective media, NKBT medium and TGN broth. In the mice of 0 to 15 weeks old, the organism was mainly isolated from the upper respiratory tract, lower intestinal tract, feces and vagina, with the highest isolation rate in the pharyngolarynx. In the pregnant and lactating mice, the organism was isolated from the same sites, but not from the uterus, fetus or mammary gland. In the neonates, the organism was isolated from the respiratory and intestinal tracts withi

Construction and vaccine potential of an aroA mutant of Pasteurella haemolytica.

The aroA gene, encoding 5-enolpyruvylshikimate 3-phosphate synthase, from Pasteurella haemolytica biotype A, serotype 1 was cloned by complementation of the aroA mutation in Escherichia coli strain AB2829 after electroporation with a DNA library constructed in pUC18. The cloned P. haemolytica aroA gene was inactivated by insertion of a kanamycin resistance gene and reintroduced by allelic exchange into the chromosome of the parental P. haemolytica using PbluescriptII SK+. The P. haemolytica aroA mutant was highly attenuated in a mouse septicaemic model. Mice immunized intraperitoneally with tw

Construction of isogenic mutants of Pasteurella haemolytica by allelic replacement.

We describe methods for the mutagenesis of cloned Pasteurella haemolytica (Gram-) genes and for the construction of P. haemolytica mutants by allelic exchange. We used these methods to construct isogenic mutants of P. haemolytica which no longer synthesize three membrane lipoproteins (Lpp). A single genetic locus, consisting of three tandemly arranged genes encoding 28-30-kDa membrane Lpp, was replaced with a mutated locus which carries the beta-lactamase-encoding ApR gene from a 4.2-kb P. haemolytica plasmid. The inactivated locus was introduced into P. haemolytica by electroporation of a pla

Epidemiology of human infections by Pasteurella and related groups in France.

A retrospective study of infections due to Pasteurella (P.) and related groups was performed between the Pasteurella National Center and Nancy's hospital from 1985 to 1991. Among the 958 cases recorded, wound infections (bites, scratches and punctures) were the common forms of pasteurellosis (66%) caused by P. multocida (48%), P. canis (11%), P. dagmatis (5%), P. stomatis (4%), and in few cases by groups EF-4 and M-5 (14 and 13%, respectively). In human infections unrelated to animal wounds, respiratory tract diseases and bacteremia-septicemia were the predominant infections with respectively

Occurrence and diversity of plasmids in ovine isolates of Pasteurella haemolytica.

160 ovine isolates of Pasteurella haemolytica, representing each of the 16 serotypes and also untypable strains, were examined for plasmid content. Plasmid DNA was identified in, and prepared from, strains of serotypes A2, T3, A14 and A16 and also from an untypable strain. The relationship between the plasmids present in the different strains was examined both by restriction fragment profile analysis and by DNA/DNA hybridisation. Both methods gave broadly similar results and showed that each serotype tended to contain either a single plasmid species, or a limited range of species, and that str

Calcium ion involvement in the action of Pasteurella haemolytica leukotoxin.

The influence of Ca2+ ions on the cytotoxic activity of Pasteurella haemolytica leukotoxin was investigated. The divalent cation influenced the cytotoxic effect of the leukotoxin for sensitive BL-3 target cells, but its absence did not eliminate cytotoxicity. In short-term 1-h assays using neutral red uptake as a measure of cell viability, depletion of Ca2+ either by exhaustive dialysis or by addition of the Ca2+ chelators EDTA and EGTA eliminated the cytolytic effect of low doses of the toxin. Addition of Ca2+ to target cell cultures depleted of the divalent cation restored the cytolytic effe

Experimental infection of sheep with Mycoplasma ovipneumoniae and Pasteurella haemolytica.

A group of Caesarian-derived, colostrum-deprived lambs was inoculated intranasally and intratracheally with a virulent Mycoplasma ovipneumoniae isolate selected from ovine mammary studies and propagated in an ovine mammary gland. Other groups of lambs were inoculated with M. ovipneumoniae in combination with Pasteurella haemolytica type Al or P. haemolytica alone. The M. ovipneumoniae isolate alone did not induce any specific pneumonic lesions in the lambs and when combined with P. haemolytica type Al did not increase the severity of the P. haemolytica-type lesions. Fifty percent of lambs inoc

Mechanisms of acquired resistance to Pasteurella multocida infection: a review.

Pasteurella multocida is an animal parasite of considerable economic and veterinary importance. The organism produces both capsular polysaccharide and somatic (lipopolysaccharide) antigens used to serotype the organisms. Correlations exist between antigenic structure, host susceptibility and strain virulence. The host response seems to be predominantly polymorphonuclear in nature, with little evidence of a mononuclear component in the host response to infection. In the absence of specific opsonins, phagocytosis rates are very slow, the organisms multiplying freely in an essentially extracellul

[Sepsis caused by Pasteurella multocida after a dog bite].

This article reports a case of systemic infection caused by Pasteurella multocida. The infection was confirmed in a 79-year-old man who was admitted to the hospital after falling from a couch. The disease was manifested by the development of fever, chills, joint pain. Laboratory tests revealed elevated C-reactive protein levels, slightly elevated nitrogen metabolites, borderline leukocytosis, and thrombocytopenia. The pathogen was identified in a blood culture and a wound swab culture. The patient was initially treated with third-generation cephalosporin (cefotaxime) and later with cefuroxime.

More Than a Case of Cellulitis: Pasteurella multocida Bacteremia.

Pasteurella multocida (P. multocida) is an anaerobic Gram-negative coccobacilli belonging to the Pasteurella genus. It is found in many animals' oral cavities and gastrointestinal tracts, including those of cats and dogs. In this case report, we present an individual with cellulitis of the lower extremity who was later found to have P. multocida bacteremia. The patient had four pet dogs and one pet cat. He denied obtaining any scratches or bites from the pets. The patient initially presented to an urgent care center complaining of a one-day history of proximal left lower extremity edema, eryth

Spectrum of human Pasteurella species infections in tropical Australia.

BACKGROUND: Acquired zoonotic infections with Pasteurella bacterial species have a wide clinical spectrum of disease from invasive infections to localised bite-wound infections. METHODS: This study reviewed the spectrum of the demographic, clinical, temporal, and microbiological trends of laboratory confirmed Pasteurella species infections presenting to a single-centre tropical tertiary hospital over a twenty-year period. RESULTS: 195 episodes from 190 patients were included. 51.3% patients were female, and 20.5% Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander peoples. Crude incidence of Pasteurella sp

Pasteurella multocida toxin - lessons learned from a mitogenic toxin.

The gram-negative, zoonotic bacterium Pasteurella multocida was discovered in 1880 and found to be the causative pathogen of fowl cholera. Pasteurella-related diseases can be found in domestic and wild life animals such as buffalo, sheep, goat, deer and antelope, cats, dogs and tigers and cause hemorrhagic septicemia in cattle, rhinitis or pneumonia in rabbits or fowl cholera in poultry and birds. Pasteurella multocida does not play a major role in the immune-competent human host, but can be found after animal bites or in people with close contact to animals. Toxigenic strains are most commonl

Pathogenicity of Pasteurella sp. in lumpsuckers (Cyclopterus lumpus L.).

The incidence of disease caused by Pasteurella sp. in farmed lumpsuckers in Norway has been steadily increasing in recent years, causing significant economic losses and fish welfare issues. The disease affects all life stages, both in hatcheries and after release into salmon cages. Therefore, it is important to establish robust challenge models, to be used for vaccine development. Exposure experiments via intramuscular and intraperitoneal injection underlined the high virulence of the bacteria, whereas the cohabitation and bath models allowed the chronic symptoms of the disease to be studied m

Pasteurella multocida wound infection transmitted by a pet dog.

INTRODUCTION: Human pasteurellosis is a severe human infection that accounts for 20-30 human deaths annually worldwide. Mucous secretions derived from pets comprise the primary source of infection, which are transmitted through animal scratches or bites. CASE REPORT: We describe a case of Pasteurella multocida wound infection in an immunocompetent adult with a decubitus ulcer of the lower extremity. The organism was also isolated from an oral swab of the patient's dog with which he reported close contact. The patient had a favorable outcome following aggressive surgical debridement, antimicro
