Many pathogenic bacteria employ systems to incorporate sialic acid into their membranes as a means of protection against host defense mechanisms. In Pasteurella multocida, an opportunistic pathogen which causes diseases of economic importance in a wide range of animal species, sialic acid uptake plays a role in a mouse model of systemic pasteurellosis. To further investigate the importance of sialic acid uptake in pathogenesis, sialic acid uptake mutants of an avian strain of P. multocida P-1059 (A:3) were constructed, characterized, and an in-frame sialic acid uptake deletion mutant was asses

Acute suppurative thyroiditis (AST) is an uncommon condition of the thyroid gland. Organisms of the staphylococcal and streptococcal species are the most commonly reported causative agents. Rarely, AST has been associated with transient hyperthyroidism. We report a unique case of AST that was caused by Pasteurella multocida and was associated with thyrotoxicosis in a previously healthy 51-year-old woman.

UNLABELLED: Pasteurella multocida is the commonest cause of local infection after an animal bite, but is an unusual cause of meningitis. We report a case of P. multocida meningitis occurring in a 7-week-old infant which was contracted after non-traumatic contact with a household pet, that is, without any animal bite or scratch. The organism may be easily confused with more common Gram-negative pathogens. In this case, it was initially incorrectly diagnosed as Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib); a possibility which has important implications in the era of routine use of Hib vaccine in infant i

A model of pneumonic pasteurellosis has been established in goats using Pasteurella multocida harvested from pneumonic lungs of goats (types A and D), rabbits (type A) and sheep (type D). The resultant infections were acute, subacute or chronic. The gross and histological lesions of the subacute and chronic infections were typical of pneumonic pasteurellosis. P. multocida type D produced significantly (P < 0.01) more severe lesions when compared with other isolates. There were strong correlations between the clinical signs and the severity of lesions.

A case of acute pneumonia due to Pasteurella multocida ssp multocida occurred in a young man with AIDS and chronic sinusitis. The pneumonia was diagnosed by bronchoscopy and responded to treatment with aztreonam. Epidemiologic investigation revealed the case was temporally related to nontraumatic exposure to cat secretions that the patient presumably had acquired via an aerosol. The cat's oral cavity was cultured and an isolate of P multocida ssp multocida with identical biochemical reactions, DNA restriction patterns, and nearly identical fatty acid profile to that of the patient's isolate wa

Osteomyelitis due to Pasteurella multocida has been frequently documented but virtually all previous cases have resulted from direct inoculation of the organism or contiguous spread of local infection, following animal bites or scratches. Infections often occur in patients with serious underlying illnesses. Haematogenous osteomyelitis due to P multocida has very rarely been reported particularly in patients with chronic renal failure. We describe a patient on chronic haemodialysis who developed an acute febrile illness, two months following a monkey bite, caused by haematogenous cervical verte

To evaluate the relationship between pneumonic lesions and distribution of bacteria, lungs from calves inoculated with Pasteurella multocida were examined histologically by use of immunoperoxidase technique. Pneumonic lesions fundamentally consisted of broncho-pneumonia with fibrinopurulent pleuritis. The lesions were confirmed to be associated with inoculated P multocida, using the immunoperoxidase technique. The P multocida antigen was detected not only in the bacterial clusters in the lesions, but also in the cytoplasm of infiltrating neutrophils and macrophages. Further, immunoelectron mic

Pasteurella multocida was isolated from 2 farms on which grower or finisher pigs had problems of severe emaciation and high death loss (greater than 5%). At necropsy, the pigs had extensive suppurative pleuritis and pericarditis, with adhesions over the lung surface. On one farm, the pigs also had multiple lung abscesses. Histologic findings included polymorphonuclear cell infiltration in bronchial and alveolar spaces, thickening of alveolar walls, pleuritis, and in some cases, abscesses. From all pigs, P multocida was isolated. The strains (A52, A59) were serotype A and were nontoxigenic. Exp

Mallards (Anas platyrhynchos platyrhynchos) and white pekin ducks (Anas platyrhynchos domesticus) were infected with duck plague virus and challenged with LD20's of Pasteurella multocida and P. anatipestifer. There was no difference between mortality rates of duck plague-infected ducks and controls, suggesting that these organisms do not act synergistically under the conditions of our experiments. There was a difference of about 500-fold between the LD20 of P. multocida for mallards and that for white pekin ducks, indicating that mallards are much more susceptible to avian cholera than white p

Pasteurella multocida, a small, gram-negative coccobacillus , is part of the normal oral flora of many animals, including the dog and cat. P. multocida is the etiologic agent in a variety of infectious disease syndromes. We have reported 34 cases of infection caused by P. multocida and have reviewed the English literature. P. multocida infections may be divided into three broad groups: 1. Infections resulting from animal bites and scratches : The most common infections caused by P. multocida are local wound infections following animal bites or scratches . Cats are the source of infection in 60

AIMS: Pasteurella multocida (Pm) is one of the main pathogens causing bovine respiratory disease in China. The prevention and control measures against Pm are traditionally based on the use of broad-spectrum antibiotics. Previous studies have found that Pm is prone to developing antibiotic resistance and tolerance-related mutations when exposed to low concentrations of antibiotics, ultimately leading to challenges in the prevention and control of Pm. This study aimed to explore the role of the recO gene in Pm in mediating resistance and tolerance to fluoroquinolones.

Pasteurella multocida is a zoonotic, encapsulated, and gram-negative coccobacillus frequently implicated in soft tissue infections following animal bites, particularly dogs and cats. Invasive infections, including bacteremia and endovascular involvement, are rare and typically occur in immunocompromised or elderly individuals. Vascular graft infections due to P. multocida are rare, with limited cases reported in the literature. We report the case of an 87-year-old man with a history of abdominal aortic aneurysm repair who presented with acute confusion, weakness, and dyspnea. Initial workup re

Pasteurella multocida (P. multocida) is not only the core pathogen of bovine respiratory disease (BRDC) but also a significant zoonotic agent, posing a dual threat to global animal husbandry and public health. This study utilized untargeted metabolomics to systematically dissect the metabolic regulatory network of P. multocida in response to tylosin within a One Health framework. The results revealed significant "defense-growth" metabolic reprogramming: activation of amino sugar and nucleotide sugar pathways (e.g., CDP-glucose) indicated cell wall remodeling, while directional shifts in the ph

Pasteurella multocida is the main pathogen causing fowl cholera and poses a serious threat to the poultry industry. Current clinical control relies on antibiotics, but the prevalence of drug-resistant strains makes it urgent to develop new antibacterial strategies. In this study, a P. multocida-specific bacteriophage vB_PmuS_ZP41 was isolated and identified as a member of the family Siphoviridae by transmission electron microscopy. This phage showed lytic activity against 13 out of 19 clinical isolates of P. multocida (68.4%) and remained stable at 4-50°C and pH 3-9. The optimal multiplicity o

Pasteurella multocida is a rare but aggressive causative organism in panophthalmitis. It is commonly transmitted to humans through contact with cats and dogs as a result of bites or scratches. We report a rare case of panophthalmitis due to P. multocida following an industrial penetrating injury. A previously healthy 40-year-old steel factory operator developed a right eye penetrating injury after being struck accidentally by a piece of iron wire which flew into his eye during work. He complained of immediate blurring of vision and severe pain in the affected eye. During history taking, he men

Pasteurella multocida is a common cause of cutaneous and soft-tissue infections. Cases of primary diseases in the lung result from the inhalation of airborne contaminants from infected nasopharyngeal secretions from pets such as cats and dogs. Clinical presentations due to P. multocida vary from a cough with or without hemoptysis or chest pain to severe debility. This is common in elderly populations with existing pulmonary diseases such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and bronchiectasis. The present case highlights P. multocida pneumonia in an Indian zookeeper with a pet dog who had

A neonatal male injured by the family dog developed meningitis secondary to Pasteurella multocida . After initially defervescing with IV antibiotic treatment, he became febrile again, and imaging revealed a skull fracture and fluid collection. Following neurosurgical evacuation and an extended course of antibiotics, the patient was discharged home.
