Demographic and practice characteristics of pathologists who enjoy breast tissue interpretation.

Physician attributes, job satisfaction and confidence in clinical skills are associated with enhanced performance and better patient outcomes. We surveyed 252 pathologists to evaluate associations between enjoyment of breast pathology, demographic/clinical characteristics and diagnostic performance. Diagnostic performance was determined by comparing pathologist assessments of a set of 60 cases with consensus assessments of the same cases made by a panel of experienced pathologists. Eighty-three percent of study participants reported enjoying breast pathology. Pathologists who enjoy breast inte

[Non-neoplastic alterations of the prostate. Why should pathologists know them?].

Non-neoplastic changes in the prostatic gland include inflammatory, atrophic, hyperplastic and metaplastic reaction patterns of the glandular epithelium and the fibromuscular stroma. Furthermore, histoanatomical structures from outside the prostatic gland are sometimes included in biopsy material. Knowledge of the morphological appearance of benign, reactive lesions is important in order to differentiate them from malignancies. To this aim knowing the precise location of tissue sampling as well as ancillary immunohistochemical investigations are often useful or necessary.

Discharge experiences of speech-language pathologists working in Cyprus and Greece.

Post-termination relationships are complex because the client may need additional services and it may be difficult to determine when the speech-language pathologist-client relationship is truly terminated. In my contribution to this scientific forum, discharge experiences from speech-language pathologists working in Cyprus and Greece will be explored in search of commonalities and differences in the way in which pathologists end therapy from different cultural perspectives. Within this context the personal impact on speech-language pathologists of the discharge process will be highlighted. Inh

Acute hemorrhagic leukoencephalitis: a critical entity for forensic pathologists to recognize.

Acute hemorrhagic leukoencephalopathy (AHLE) is a rare, acute disorder characterized by perivenular demyelination and diffuse hemorrhagic necrosis of the central nervous system. AHLE is thought to represent a hyperacute form of acute disseminated encephalomyelitis. AHLE is associated with a greater morbidity and mortality and, fortunately, is much less common than acute disseminated encephalomyelitis. Since most cases of AHLE result in patient demise, forensic pathologists should be cognizant of this entity and consider it in their differential diagnosis. Here we describe an interesting case of

Mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) lymphoma: a practical guide for pathologists.

Extranodal marginal zone lymphoma of mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT lymphoma) is the third most common non-Hodgkin lymphoma subtype, accounting for around 6-8% of all non-Hodgkin lymphomas in the Western hemisphere. Although MALT lymphomas are clinically indolent, the disease is typically chronic, requiring long-term clinical surveillance and, often, repeated biopsies. Pathologists thus play a central role in the diagnosis and management of these patients. The optimal diagnosis and management of a MALT lymphoma requires careful integration of morphological, immunohistochemical and mol

Histologic diagnosis of primary hyperparathyroidism: a concordance analysis between three pathologists.

Primary hyperparathyroidism (HPT) is caused by a parathyroid adenoma, hyperplasia or carcinoma. Difficulties for the histologic diagnosis of abnormal parathyroid tissue are widely recognized. The aim of the study was to evaluate the reproducibility of the morphologic criteria through a concordance study among three pathologists. Representative slides of 40 patients with biochemically primary HPT stained with hematoxylin and eosin were blindly reviewed by three pathologists. Each pathologist established the diagnosis of adenoma or hyperplasia and assessed the presence of fat cells, a rim of nor

Current trends in laryngectomy rehabilitation: a survey of speech-language pathologists.

This study determined the perceptions of experienced speech-language pathologists regarding current practices in the speech rehabilitation of laryngectomy patients since the introduction of the tracheoesophageal puncture-voice prosthesis technique in 1980. The sample population consisted of 151 experienced speech-language pathologists, or 43% of those who were sent questionnaires. The speech-language pathologists ranked tracheoesophageal puncture-voice prosthesis as their most preferred speech rehabilitation method and the electrolarynx as their least preferred, even though the electrolarynx c

The Role of the Surgical Pathologist in the Recognition of Hereditary Neuroendocrine Tumors.

About 10% of neuroendocrine tumors (NETs) can occur in the context of several different hereditary tumor syndromes, and, in a not negligible number of cases, their diagnosis precedes the clinical identification of the hereditary syndrome. In this context, the role of a pathologist can be crucial in identifying these sentinel cases. Indeed, early recognition of inherited NETs has significant clinical value, both for guiding therapeutic strategies and for managing at-risk family members. Modern pathologists play a central role not only in the accurate diagnosis and subtyping of NETs but also in

The Role of the Surgical Pathologist in the Recognition of Hereditary Mesenchymal Neoplasms.

There are inherited germline variants that predispose patients to select mesenchymal tumors with associated tumor syndromes. While many of these tumors are clinically suspected or diagnosed early in life, pathologists can play a critical role in their initial recognition and reporting, prompting appropriate confirmatory testing and follow-up for the affected patient and screening for their family members. Hereditary conditions commonly encountered in association with bone and soft tissue pathology include Hereditary Multiple Osteochondromas, Familial Adenomatous Polyposis, Carney Complex, and

The Role of The Surgical Pathologist in the Recognition of Hereditary Gynecologic Cancer.

A wide spectrum of tumors can affect the gynecologic tract in the context of hereditary cancer syndromes. Over the past two decades, the approach to germline testing initiated by pathologic findings has evolved considerably. This shift began with the identification and integration of specific tumor characteristics and molecular pathways in the most common hereditary syndromes involving the female genital tract, namely, hereditary breast and ovarian cancer syndrome and Lynch syndrome. Subsequently, tumors linked to less common syndromes, such as Peutz-Jeghers syndrome, DICER1 syndrome, tuberous

The dark side of being a pathologist: Unravelling the health hazards.

BACKGROUND: Pathologists are indispensable to the practice of medicine. Awareness of health hazards among pathologists is a crucial aspect of today's time. Numerous occupational health risks are prevalent which are mostly ignored; for example, the association of microscope use for prolonged durations leading to the development of chronic pain syndromes has been acknowledged for nearly three decades, yet most pathologists are unaware about this hazard until after it transforms into a chronic health issue. The purpose of this study is to learn its prevalence in working pathologists, make them aw

[Pathologist contribution in the diagnosis of hereditary predisposition to paranganglioma and pheochromocytoma].

Hereditary predispositions are responsible for more than 30% of or paraganglioma. Their identification is essential to optimize medical care and to offer an appropriate screening to relatives. To date, there are more than 15 known paraganglioma/pheochromocytoma predisposing genes. The most frequently involved are those encoding the succinate dehydrogenase (SDHx), accounting for half of cases and the VHL gene, causing the Von Hippel Lindau syndrome and representing approximately 20% of genetically determined cases. Patients with SDHB genes mutations have a higher risk of metastatic disease. An

[Pathologist occupational hazards: Results of a survey for the French case].

INTRODUCTION: The profession of pathologist exposes to various risks, notably infectious, physical and chemical. The objective of this study was to make an inventory of these occupational risks to which pathologists are subjected and to evaluate the pathologies that they presented. A particular attention was given to microscopic and screen work as they can induce musculoskeletal or ophthalmic disorders, and stress-related psychological disorders. METHOD: An anonymous online questionnaire containing 54 questions had been sent by mail to pathologists via the French Society of Pathology and the

[Amyloid from insulin treatment: a pitfall for the pathologist and the diabetologist].

Biopsies from six diabetic patients with subcutaneous amyloid deposits formed by injected insulin have been sent to our laboratory during the last year. In all but one of the six patients a subcutaneous adipose tissue biopsy was taken due to suspicion of systemic amyloidosis. Four of these patients had renal insufficiency, with monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance (MGUS) in three while the fifth had heredity for transthyretin amyloidosis. In the sixth patient a biopsy was taken due to subcutaneous nodules at insulin injection sites. In all biopsies, large amounts of amyloid were

The Role of the Surgical Pathologist in the Diagnosis of Gastrointestinal Polyposis Syndromes.

Polyps of the gastrointestinal tract are very common lesions and most frequently sporadic in nature. Some polyp subtypes are associated with rare hereditary polyposis syndromes, including juvenile polyposis syndrome, Peutz-Jeghers syndrome, and Cowden syndrome. However, many sporadic benign lesions of the gastrointestinal tract can mimic some of these syndromic hamartomatous polyps. The role of the surgical pathologist is to raise the possibility of a hereditary condition in case of suggestive polyp histology and to look for clinical information to support the suspected diagnosis. In this revi

Drug-induced Liver Injury: The Hepatic Pathologist's Approach.

The evaluation of liver biopsies in suspected drug-induced liver injury (DILI) can be complex. The biopsy may be approached systematically, by identification of histologic lesions and then identification of the overall pattern of injury. Potential DILI must be separated from concomitant non-DILI liver disease. The findings can be analyzed with respect to the various prescription and nonprescription medications and dietary supplements under suspicion to provide a complete interpretation of the findings. The pathologic findings, the histologic differential diagnosis, and expert interpretation ar

[The key role of the pathologist in the diagnosis of syphilis: A case report].

Syphilis is a resurging sexually transmitted infection linked to Treponema Pallidum. Syphilitic lymphadenitis can be present during the 3 stages of the disease. Its histological diagnosis remains challenging for the pathologist given its possible misleading aspect and its ability to mimic as well as reactional as tumoral conditions. We report the case of an HIV-infected young patient referred for suspicion of an aggressive lymphoma. Histological and immunohistochemical analysis of cervical lymphadenopathy revealed secondary syphilis.
