Update on conjunctival pathology.

Conjunctival biopsies constitute a fairly large number of cases in a typical busy ophthalmic pathology practice. They range from a single biopsy through multiple mapping biopsies to assess the extent of a particular pathological process. Like most anatomical sites, the conjunctiva is subject to a very wide range of pathological processes. This article will cover key, commonly encountered nonneoplastic and neoplastic entities. Where relevant, sections will include recommendations on how best to submit specimens to the ophthalmic pathology laboratory and the relevance of up-to-date molecular tec

The pathology of torture.

Detainees may be subjected to torture and extra-judicial execution by State actors and terrorists. But, the pathology of torture has not been well-described. This is due to the lack of autopsies performed on victims of torture, mostly due to the disposal of the bodies of the victims by their torturers. On this basis, the cause of death of detainees subjected to torture is often a matter of speculation or remains obscure. This paper provides an overview of the pathology of torture based on the authour's experience with the autopsies of torture victims. At autopsy, many different types of inflic

Dual Pathology of Mandible.

Aneurysmal Bone cyst (ABC)is a rare benign lesion of the bone which is infrequent in craniofacial region (12%). Rapid growth pattern causing bone expansion and facial asymmetry is a characteristic feature of ABC. Giant cell lesion is another distinct pathological entity. Here we present to you a rare case of dual pathology in an 11 year old female patient who presented with a large expansile lesion in the left hemimandible. All radiographic investigations were suggestive of ABC, aspiration of the lesion resulted in blood aspirate. However only after a histologic examination the dual nature of

Pathology of eyelid tumors.

The eyelids are composed of four layers: skin and subcutaneous tissue including its adnexa, striated muscle, tarsus with the meibomian glands, and the palpebral conjunctiva. Benign and malignant tumors can arise from each of the eyelid layers. Most eyelid tumors are of cutaneous origin, mostly epidermal, which can be divided into epithelial and melanocytic tumors. Benign epithelial lesions, cystic lesions, and benign melanocytic lesions are very common. The most common malignant eyelid tumors are basal cell carcinoma in Caucasians and sebaceous gland carcinoma in Asians. Adnexal and stromal tu

Pathology of Endovascular Stents.

Contemporary endovascular stents are the product of an iterative design and development process that leverages evolving concepts in vascular biology and engineering. This article reviews how insights into vascular pathophysiology, materials science, and design mechanics drive stent design and explain modes of stent failure. Current knowledge of pathologic processes is providing a more complete picture of the factors mediating stent failure. Further evolution of endovascular stents includes bioresorbable platforms tailored to treat plaques acutely and to then disappear after lesion pacification

[Orbito-palpebral vascular pathology].

Orbito-palpebral vascular pathology represents 10% of all the diseases of this area. The lesion may be discovered during a brain CT scan or MRI, or because it causes clinical symptoms such as orbital mass, visual or oculomotor alteration, pain, proptosis, or acute bleeding due to a complication of the lesion (hemorrhage, thrombosis). We present these lesions using an anatomical, clinical, imaging and therapeutic approach. We distinguish four different entities. Vascular tumors have common imaging characteristics (hypersignal on T2 sequence, contrast enhancement, abnormal vascularization well d

Placental pathology and hypospadias.

BACKGROUND: Studies have shown that hypospadias is associated with placenta-mediated pregnancy complication (PMPC). The role of placental lesions is still unclear. We aimed to examine the association between hyposadias and placental pathology, and the effect of PMPC. METHODS: Using data from the US Collaborative Perinatal Project in 1959-1966, we identified 15,780 male subjects (167 hypospadias) for analysis. Detailed placental examinations were conducted following a standard protocol. Subjects were divided into two groups according to whether they had PMPC, including small-for-gestational-ag

[Pathology of Vasculitic Neuropathies].

Prompt diagnosis of vasculitis is necessary because neuropathy may be the first symptom of vasculitic syndrome, and it is crucial for the management of patients. Antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibody (ANCA)-associated vasculitis, rheumatoid vasculitis, cryoglobulinemia, Sjogren's syndrome, and non-systemic vasculitic neuropathy are disorders frequently associated with vasculitic neuropathy. Pathological features such as the size of the involved vessels and the type of inflammatory cells, combined with general symptoms and laboratory data, may contribute to the specific diagnosis. ANCA may be inv

Progression in venous pathology.

AIM: To review epidemiologic data on progression of venous pathology in varicose veins and from varicose veins towards chronic venous insufficiency. METHODS: We searched Medline and PubMed for epidemiologic studies concerning progression of venous pathology. RESULTS: The data suggest that reflux progression may develop from segmental to multisegmental superficial reflux. In younger age, reflux in tributaries and non-saphenous veins is more frequent. In older age, more saphenous reflux develops and more proximal sites seem to be affected. A high proportion of uncomplicated varicose vein (C2)

Pathology of bovine tuberculosis.

Bovine tuberculosis (bTB) is a chronic granulomatous caseous-necrotising inflammatory process that mainly affects the lungs and their draining lymph nodes (Ln.). The pathological changes associated with bTB infection reflect the interplay between the host defence mechanisms and the mycobacterial virulence factors and the balance between the immunologic protective responses and the damaging inflammatory processes. Inhalation is the most common infection route and causes lesions of the nasopharynx and lower respiratory tract, including its associated lymph nodes. The initial infection (primary c

Pathology of pulmonary hypertension.

The pathology of pulmonary hypertension includes numerous abnormalities of the intima, media, and adventitia of the pulmonary vascular tree. A recently completed systematic analysis revealed high variability of morphologic measurements within a given pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) lung and among all PAH lungs, as well as distinct pathologic subphenotypes, and included a subset of lungs lacking intimal and medial remodeling. There was correlation between perivascular inflammation, remodeling, and hemodynamics. This article summarizes the pathologic features of the normal and abnormal pul

[Pathology of corticobasal syndrome].

Focal asymmetric cortical atrophy with ballooned neurons, nigral degeneration, and tau-positive neuronal and glial lesions in both the gray and white matter, particularly astrocytic plaques in the affected cerebral cortex, are characteristic features of corticobasal degeneration (CBD). Since the clinical manifestations of CBD are diverse, several neurological diseases can present with clinical findings that are thought to be specific to CBD. These clinical conditions are referred to as corticobasal syndrome (CBS). CBS includes Alzheimer's disease, progressive supranuclear palsy, Pick's disease

Desminopathies: pathology and mechanisms.

The intermediate filament protein desmin is an essential component of the extra-sarcomeric cytoskeleton in muscle cells. This three-dimensional filamentous framework exerts central roles in the structural and functional alignment and anchorage of myofibrils, the positioning of cell organelles and signaling events. Mutations of the human desmin gene on chromosome 2q35 cause autosomal dominant, autosomal recessive, and sporadic myopathies and/or cardiomyopathies with marked phenotypic variability. The disease onset ranges from childhood to late adulthood. The clinical course is progressive and n

Ovarian cancer molecular pathology.

Ovarian cancer (OVC) is the fourth leading cause of cancer mortality among women in Europe and the United States. Its early detection is difficult due to the lack of specificity of clinical symptoms. Unfortunately, late diagnosis is a major contributor to the poor survival rates for OVC, which can be attributed to the lack of specific sets of markers. Aside from patients sharing a strong family history of ovarian and breast cancer, including the BRCA1 and BRCA2 tumor suppressor genes mutations, the most used biomarker is the Cancer-antigen 125 (CA-125). CA-125 has a sensitivity of 80 % and a s

No pain, no pathology?

A 22-year-old girl who had a background of reflux nephropathy and urinary tact infection presented during the night with renal angle pain and vomiting. She was treated on the emergency department (ED) pyelonephritis protocol and admitted to the short stay ward. When reviewed the next morning she was aymptomatic and feeling better. It seemed likely that she would be discharged but an ED ultrasound showed right-sided hydronephrosis and some fluid between the liver and the right kidney. CT examination confirmed the suspicion of renal tract obstruction and ruptured calyx. An 8 mm calculus was foun

Pathology of endometrioid carcinoma.

Endometrioid carcinoma is the third most frequent cancer among women in France. They are divided in two groups: type I and type II. This article describes anatomopathological and molecular features of this disease. Type I carcinoma, the most frequent, develops in a context of hyperoestrogenia. Endometrial glandular hyperplasia is the precursor lesion. The histological type is an endometrioid carcinoma. Its prognosis is good. Type II carcinoma is less frequent. It occurs on an atrophic mucosa. It is usually a more aggressive tumor like serous adenocarcinoma, clear cells carcinoma or carcinosarc

Human pathology in NCL.

In childhood the neuronal ceroid lipofuscinoses (NCL) are the most frequent lysosomal diseases and the most frequent neurodegenerative diseases but, in adulthood, they represent a small fraction among the neurodegenerative diseases. Their morphology is marked by: (i) loss of neurons, foremost in the cerebral and cerebellar cortices resulting in cerebral and cerebellar atrophy; (ii) an almost ubiquitous accumulation of lipopigments in nerve cells, but also in extracerebral tissues. Loss of cortical neurons is selective, indiscriminate depletion in early childhood forms occurring only at an adva
