AI/ML-Assisted Detection of HMGA2 RNA Isoforms in Prostate Cancer Patient Tissue.

RNA In Situ Hybridization (RISH) is a powerful tool for spatial gene expression analysis, yet its quantitative use remains limited by the high cost and inaccessibility of commercial software, particularly in under-resourced settings. This study developed an Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning (AI/ML)-assisted RISH quantification pipeline to evaluate expression patterns of High Mobility Group AT Hook-2 (HMGA2) in prostate cancer (PCa), focusing on racial disparities. We created a machine learning model capable of analyzing RISH images. Expressions of full-length (wild-type) and truncated H

AlphaDIA enables DIA transfer learning for feature-free proteomics.

The scale of data generated for mass-spectrometry-based proteomics and modern acquisition strategies poses a challenge to bioinformatic analysis. Search engines need to make optimal use of the data for biological discoveries while remaining statistically rigorous, transparent and performant. Here we present alphaDIA, a modular open-source search framework for data-independent acquisition (DIA) proteomics. We developed a feature-free identification algorithm that performs machine learning directly on the raw signal and is particularly suited for detecting patterns in data produced by time-of-fl

A Systematic Review on Physiology-based Anxiety Detection using Machine Learning.

Anxiety disorder poses a significant challenge to mental health. Diagnosing anxiety is complicated due to its various symptoms and factors, often resulting in extended periods of untreated patient suffering. As a result, patients often endure prolonged periods without treatment. This scenario has prompted researchers to step into the domain of non-invasive physiological signals, including electroencephalography, electrocardiogram, electromyography, electrodermal activity, and respiration. By integrating machine learning into the physiological signals, clinicians can identify distinct anxiety p

Infants Sucking Pattern Identification Using Machine-Learned Computational Modeling.

Breastfeeding involves a complex coordination of swallowing, breathing, and sucking, with the infant's sucking proficiency being crucial for adequate nutrient intake. However, real-time assessment of milk intake is difficult, and issues with sucking often become apparent after the infant shows signs of nutrient deficiency. Traditional assessments by clinicians rely on the expertise and subjective judgment of healthcare professionals, enabling personalized evaluations. In this research, we introduce a novel approach to identifying sucking patterns by leveraging data collected from infants durin

Breast ultrasound image classification based on multiple-instance learning.

Breast ultrasound (BUS) image segmentation is a very difficult task due to poor image quality and speckle noise. In this paper, local features extracted from roughly segmented regions of interest (ROIs) are used to describe breast tumors. The roughly segmented ROI is viewed as a bag. And subregions of the ROI are considered as the instances of the bag. Multiple-instance learning (MIL) method is more suitable for classifying breast tumors using BUS images. However, due to the complexity of BUS images, traditional MIL method is not applicable. In this paper, a novel MIL method is proposed for so

Identification of common genetic features and pathways for osteoporosis with frozen shoulder by integrated bioinformatics analysis and machine learning.

Frozen shoulder (FS) and osteoporosis (OP) are common age-related degenerative diseases, occurring more frequently in females, which suggests potential molecular links between them. This study aimed to identify shared genetic features and pathways of OP and FS using bioinformatics and machine learning approaches. Gene expression data for OP and FS were obtained from the Gene Expression Omnibus database. Common differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were identified. Functional enrichment analysis, protein-protein interaction (PPI) networks construction, and machine learning algorithms were appli

Defining the Optimal Region of Interest for Hyperemia Grading in the Bulbar Conjunctiva.

Conjunctival hyperemia or conjunctival redness is a symptom that can be associated with a broad group of ocular diseases. Its levels of severity are represented by standard photographic charts that are visually compared with the patient's eye. This way, the hyperemia diagnosis becomes a nonrepeatable task that depends on the experience of the grader. To solve this problem, we have proposed a computer-aided methodology that comprises three main stages: the segmentation of the conjunctiva, the extraction of features in this region based on colour and the presence of blood vessels, and, finally,

Disease-specific network pattern of perinatal depression revealed by Common Orthogonal Basis Extraction.

The clinical diagnosis of perinatal depression (PD) presents considerable challenge, as it is much harder to identify than non-perinatal depression. Psychologically, common emotional fluctuations during pregnancy are easily confounded with depressive symptoms, leading to missed and incorrect diagnoses. Neurologically, pregnancy-induced alterations in brain activity could obscure neuroimaging features specific to PD. Therefore, this study introduced an innovative approach that combined brain network analysis with Common Orthogonal Basis Extraction (COBE) to identify a PD-Specific Network Patter

Electrolaryngography in laryngeal disorders.

This study was designed to analyse recordings of vocal fold vibrations using the laryngograph, a machine which measures the change in electrical impedance across the larynx. Recordings were made of each patient reading a standard text. The output was analysed in two ways: by study of waveform, and by production of a frequency distribution curve, this last being performed by a PDP 12 computer. Analysis shows an increase in the low frequencies and irregular curve associated with hoarseness but no pattern specific for different diseases. After operation and speech therapy an objective measure of
