Spatial distribution of HD-EMG improves identification of task and force in patients with incomplete spinal cord injury.

BACKGROUND: Recent studies show that spatial distribution of High Density surface EMG maps (HD-EMG) improves the identification of tasks and their corresponding contraction levels. However, in patients with incomplete spinal cord injury (iSCI), some nerves that control muscles are damaged, leaving some muscle parts without an innervation. Therefore, HD-EMG maps in patients with iSCI are affected by the injury and they can be different for every patient. The objective of this study is to investigate the spatial distribution of intensity in HD-EMG recordings to distinguish co-activation patterns

3D liver segmentation using multiple region appearances and graph cuts.

PURPOSE: Efficient and accurate 3D liver segmentations from contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CT) images play an important role in therapeutic strategies for hepatic diseases. However, inhomogeneous appearances, ambiguous boundaries, and large variance in shape often make it a challenging task. The existence of liver abnormalities poses further difficulty. Despite the significant intensity difference, liver tumors should be segmented as part of the liver. This study aims to address these challenges, especially when the target livers contain subregions with distinct appearances. METHODS:

Automated face extraction and normalization of 3D Mesh Data.

3D stereophotography is rapidly being adopted by medical researchers for analysis of facial forms and features. An essential step for many applications using 3D face data is to first crop the head and face from the raw images. The goal of this paper is to develop a reliable automatic methodology for extracting the face from raw data with texture acquired from a stereo imaging system, based on the medical researchers' specific requirements. We present an automated process, including eye and nose estimation, face detection, Procrustes analysis and final noise removal to crop out the faces and no

Feasibility of geometric-intensity-based semi-automated delineation of the tentorium cerebelli from MRI scans.

This paper describes a feasibility study of a method for delineating the tentorium cerebelli in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) brain scans. The tentorium cerebelli is a thin sheet of dura matter covering the cerebellum and separating it from the posterior part of the temporal lobe and the occipital lobe of the cerebral hemispheres. Cortical structures such as the parahippocampal gyrus can be indistinguishable from tentorium in magnetized prepared rapid gradient echo and T1-weighted MRI scans. Similar intensities in these neighboring regions make it difficult to perform accurate cortical anal

Noninvasive organization analysis along consecutive episodes of paroxysmal atrial fibrillation.

Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common cardiac arrhythmia in clinical practice. Although its mechanisms are incompletely understood, electrophysiological and structural remodeling of the atria seem to play an important role in the arrhythmia transition from paroxysmal to persistent. However, the time course of the atrial remodeling along onward episodes of non-induced paroxysmal AF has not been investigated yet. In this work, a non-invasive method, based on the regularity estimation of AF through sample entropy (SampEn), has been used to assess the organization evolution along onward epis

Diagnosis of dental deformities in cephalometry images using support vector machine.

This paper proposes an automated target recognition algorithm using Support Vector Machine (SVM) to extract landmark points for craniofacial features in cephalometry radiograph. The features are extracted by subjecting the radiograph to the Projected Principle Edge Distribution (PPED) algorithm. Edge flags are accumulated in every four columns and spatial distribution of edge flags are represented by a histogram. The resultants are the front end of support vector machine. Vectors, which possess land marks, are separated from all other vectors. The centroid points, automatically determined from

Live level set: a hybrid method of livewire and level set for medical image segmentation.

Livewire and level set are popular methods for medical image segmentation. In this article, the authors propose a hybrid method of livewire and level set, termed the live level set (LLS). The LLS replaces the one graph update iteration in the classic livewire with two iterations of graph updates. The first iteration generates an initial contour for a level set computation. The level set distance is then factored back into the cost function in the second iteration of graph update. The authors validated LLS using synthetic images. The results show that the performance of the LLS is superior to b

A fuzzy clustering neural network architecture for classification of ECG arrhythmias.

Accurate and computationally efficient means of classifying electrocardiography (ECG) arrhythmias has been the subject of considerable research effort in recent years. This study presents a comparative study of the classification accuracy of ECG signals using a well-known neural network architecture named multi-layered perceptron (MLP) with backpropagation training algorithm, and a new fuzzy clustering NN architecture (FCNN) for early diagnosis. The ECG signals are taken from MIT-BIH ECG database, which are used to classify 10 different arrhythmias for training. These are normal sinus rhythm,

Automating genomic data mining via a sequence-based matrix format and associative rule set.

There is an enormous amount of information encoded in each genome--enough to create living, responsive and adaptive organisms. Raw sequence data alone is not enough to understand function, mechanisms or interactions. Changes in a single base pair can lead to disease, such as sickle-cell anemia, while some large megabase deletions have no apparent phenotypic effect. Genomic features are varied in their data types and annotation of these features is spread across multiple databases. Herein, we develop a method to automate exploration of genomes by iteratively exploring sequence data for correlat

Multivariate classifications of transitional cell tumors of the bladder: nuclear abnormality index and pattern recognition analysis.

The authors report their experiences in applying two types of computer-aided multivariate classification systems in transitional cell tumors of the bladder. The systems are based on nuclear changes in urothelial papillary lesions. 19 out of 54 parameters, selected on the basis of the overlapping area between contiguous grades and the monotonic function, were combined mathematically to obtain the nuclear abnormality index. This index expresses the progressive nuclear abnormalities as a single number on a continuous scale from 0.5 to 2.6. The standard deviation (SD) of the 10 largest nuclear are

A computer model of auditory efferent suppression: implications for the recognition of speech in noise.

The neural mechanisms underlying the ability of human listeners to recognize speech in the presence of background noise are still imperfectly understood. However, there is mounting evidence that the medial olivocochlear system plays an important role, via efferents that exert a suppressive effect on the response of the basilar membrane. The current paper presents a computer modeling study that investigates the possible role of this activity on speech intelligibility in noise. A model of auditory efferent processing [Ferry, R. Rethinking automated P-wave analysis: A perspective on methodological limitations and future directions.

P-wave indices derived from the surface electrocardiogram are increasingly used as markers of atrial cardiomyopathy and predictors of atrial fibrillation and stroke. Their widespread adoption has been driven by automated ECG analysis, enabling large-scale studies and integration into clinical workflows. However, this expansion has occurred without sufficient scrutiny of the methodological assumptions underlying automated measurement and interpretation. In this review, the current approaches to P-wave analysis are reviewed with focus on the most common P-wave indices used in large-scale studies

Development and validation of an automated MTF measurement method for five types of Catphan phantoms using bar pattern objects.

Purpose. To develop an automated method for measuring spatial resolution using the bar pattern objects in Catphan 500, 503, 504, 600, and 604 phantoms.Method.After identifying the phantom's center coordinates and anchor, we used template matching to estimate the position of each bar pattern object. Subsequently, a circular mask was used to segment the objects locally, yielding the accurate center point of each object. A region of interest (ROI) was then drawn on each object, taking into account its position and angle relative to the phantom center. By plotting the modulation transfer function (

FDMB-YOLOv11: Traffic police command gesture recognition method under different lighting conditions.

To address the challenges of false detection, insufficient feature representation, and limited real-time performance in image-based traffic police command gesture detection under different lighting conditions, this paper proposes a detection model named FDMB-YOLOv11 based on the YOLOv11n architecture. Firstly, the detection head was enhanced by introducing Frequency Adaptive Dilated Convolution (FADC), while the BiFormer attention mechanism was incorporated into the C2PSA module. Secondly, MobileNetV4 was adopted as the backbone network to reduce computational complexity. Finally, standard con

SVM directed machine learning classifier for human action recognition network.

Understanding human behavior and human action recognition are both essential components of effective surveillance video analysis for the purpose of guaranteeing public safety. However, existing approaches such as three-dimensional convolutional neural networks (3D CNN) and two-stream neural networks (2SNN) have computational hurdles due to the significant parameterization they require. In this paper, we offer HARNet, a specialized lightweight residual 3D CNN that is built on directed acyclic graphs and was created expressly to handle these issues and achieve effective human action detection. Unravelling Influence Factors in Pattern Recognition Myoelectric Control Systems: The Impact of Limb Positions and Electrode Shifts.

Pattern recognition (PR)-based myoelectric control systems can naturally provide multifunctional and intuitive control of upper limb prostheses and restore lost limb function, but understanding their robustness remains an open scientific question. This study investigates how limb positions and electrode shifts-two factors that have been suggested to cause classification deterioration-affect classifiers' performance by quantifying changes in the class distribution using each factor as a class and computing the repeatability and modified separability indices. Ten intact-limb participants took pa

A knowledge graph-based analytical model for mining clinical value of drug stress echocardiography for diagnosis, risk stratification and prognostic evaluation of coronary artery disease.

The three major techniques for clinically diagnosing coronary heart disease, including angina associated with myocardial ischemia, are coronary angiography, myocardial perfusion imaging, and drug stress echocardiography. Compared to the first two methods, which are invasive or involve the use of radionuclides, drug stress echocardiography is increasingly used in clinical practice due to its non-invasive, low-risk, and controllable nature, and wide applicability. We developed a novel methodology to demonstrate knowledge graph-based efficacy analysis of drug stress echocardiography as a compleme

DrugRep-KG: Toward Learning a Unified Latent Space for Drug Repurposing Using Knowledge Graphs.

Drug repurposing or repositioning (DR) refers to finding new therapeutic applications for existing drugs. Current computational DR methods face data representation and negative data sampling challenges. Although retrospective studies attempt to operate various representations, it is a crucial step for an accurate prediction to aggregate these features and bring the associations between drugs and diseases into a unified latent space. In addition, the number of unknown associations between drugs and diseases, which is considered negative data, is much higher than the number of known associations
